Race Preview: 15:50 Ripon – Ripon Races Ladies Day Handicap (Class 2, 6f, 0–105, 4yo+)Going: Good (Good to Firm in places) | Field: 9 declared | Surface: Turf | Pace Forecast: Weak

·

1. Race Setup and Tactical Context

This 6f Class 2 handicap brings together a field of nine older horses rated up to 105. The pace is expected to be on the weak side, with no guaranteed front-runner. Prominent racers like Baldomero, Secret Guest, and Pals Battalion are likely to be closest to the speed. Hold-up horses such as First Folio, Fortamour, and Commanche Falls may be at risk of needing luck in running, especially at Ripon where patient tactics can be a hindrance without a strong pace.

There is no declared draw bias, but historically Ripon’s straight course can slightly favour those drawn middle to high if the ground stays fast.

2. Contenders, Profiles & Notables

TREFOR (AdjR 113) – A progressive 4yo who improved again to win at Doncaster (6f, good to firm) off 87. Strong closing effort that aligned with his improving time figures. Lightly raced, still ahead of the handicapper. Charles Hills has him moving forward and fast ground suits. Main danger.

COMMANCHE FALLS (AdjR 112) – Former Group 3 winner now in handicaps off 100. Ran his best race of 2025 when second at Hamilton last time. Proven over course and distance, but may need the race to fall apart late. Still retains class, though now aged 8.

FORTAMOUR (AdjR 113) – Ripon six-time course winner, including multiple C&D wins. In-form with two placed efforts here this term, including a close second off 81. Track, trip and ground ideal, but often finds one too good at this level.

BALDOMERO (AdjR 113) – Bounced back to form at Doncaster with a front-running win. Typically better in big-field scenarios where he can bully from the front. Best when allowed to dictate or get a soft lead. Inconsistent but dangerous if on a going day.

PALS BATTALION (AdjR 113) – Another progressive 4yo with consistent efforts in big-field sprints this spring. Visor has sharpened him up. Better when held up off a solid pace; might find things tactically awkward here, but remains of interest.

IRISH NECTAR (AdjR 114) – Unexposed 4yo from Kevin Ryan who has won this race twice in recent years. Ran well at Carlisle on return from 7 months off, shaping as though fitter for the outing. Likely to improve, and well drawn. Trainer has a notable record in this race.

SECRET GUEST (AdjR 112) – Thirsk winner in May, form took a backward step at York in a hot race. Holds course form, though high head carriage and patchy record make him a difficult horse to catch right. Has ability if things drop right.

FIRST FOLIO (AdjR 113) – Was a horse of potential two seasons back but form has regressed. Tactics last time at York (did too much too soon) suggest he’s not gone entirely. Conditions suit and Timeform suggest a turnaround could come soon. Market watch advised.

FIVETHOUSANDTOONE (AdjR 112) – Well treated on old form but has run flat in most recent starts. Not without ability (Frankel x sprint pedigree) and returns to turf now off a career-low mark. But not shaping like a winner-in-waiting.

4. Each-Way Angles (9 runners)

  • FORTAMOUR is a viable each-way option, especially if 13/2 or bigger, with Ripon C&D credentials and the right pace shape.
  • IRISH NECTAR may be underestimated; second run after a break for a trainer who has won this twice in the last three years.

6. Summary + Smart Play

This is a warm 0–105 sprint with a mix of proven class, course specialists, and improving handicappers. Trefor is the most obviously progressive in the field and has the tactical speed to adapt to what might be a modestly run affair. Commanche Falls brings Group-level back class and can go close again, while Fortamour continues to knock on the door at a track he thrives at.

Smart Play
Win Bet: Trefor – well-treated, progressive profile, and tactically versatile
Each-Way Saver: Fortamour – rock-solid track record, place claims very strong

Keep an eye on late support for Irish Nectar – second start back and Ryan targets this race.
