·

Class 4 | 1m5f9y | 4yo+ | €9,000 | Good to Firm (Turf)
Pace Forecast: Very Strong
Draw Bias: Not significant over this trip, though historically prominent racers tend to be favoured. However, the expected strong pace could turn things in favour of closers or those who race just off the lead.

Contenders & Profile Analysis

POSITIVE ENERGY (Adjusted TFR 79) – Produced a career-best to win a 15-runner handicap at Navan in October, and has since landed a hurdles contest. Solid trainer-jockey combination (O’Callaghan/Keane) with strong stats in Flat handicaps and for solo runners. Returns off 81 days but clearly progressive. Hold-up style suits this scenario but will need a clear run.

PREPARATIONS (TFR 76) – Improving 4yo, solid second behind a well-treated rival last time and fared best of those held up. Stays well and has strong course-suitability credentials. Trainer A. Slattery is in good form. Has tactical pace and won’t be inconvenienced by the likely strong gallop.

DESERT FRIEND (TFR 76) – Course winner and placed in a big-field Navan handicap last time, staying on well. Still capable at 9 years old and proven over 1m6f+. Likely to be ridden patiently, which could be an asset today. Trainer Mrs Denise Foster has won this race previously.

SPANISH JOHN (TFR 74) – Returned from a break with a win at Tipperary, handling a stamina test well. Has form on varying ground types and looks to be on the upgrade at 7. However, his hold-up style and lack of tactical speed may leave him needing luck late on.

FIANNA (TFR 77) – Starting to show form, fifth over 2m at Listowel last time in a stronger race than it appears. Potential for improvement now finding a suitable trip on good ground. Mild stamina doubts but one to keep on the radar.

THE MEDIATOR (TFR 78) – 8yo with modest Flat form but decent hurdling profile. Not seen to best effect last time and wore blinkers for the first time. May be compromised by the pace, especially if unable to hold position early.

POWERFUL HOOK HEAD (TFR 76p) – Lightly raced and from the Joseph O’Brien yard. Hasn’t built on maiden promise and off 259 days, so fitness is a question. That said, the fact the yard perseveres is a positive. Market check essential.

MAGNETIC NORTH (TFR 77) – Veteran with consistent form, but likely to be taken out of his comfort zone by the strong pace. Often races prominently and that style looks vulnerable today.

OUT ON FRIDAY (TFR 77) – Front-runner who may be caught out by the likely pace burn-up. Fourth at Gowran last time after leading. Will likely set or force the pace, which could compromise him late.

ALLO AL KHAWANEEJ (TFR 69+) – Potential for better but recent form uninspiring. 22 days off and yard rarely runs them without intent, so worth noting market.

KHORMOR SYD (TFR 75) – Exposed profile and generally outclassed in recent runs. Looks held.

EVENING’S EMPIRE (TFR 77) – Won off a break last season, but recent return was very poor. Has the stamina but looks out of form. Market check vital.

TASSAROLO (TFR 77+) – Well backed in the past and now a hurdles winner. Unexposed on the Flat and could improve on first Flat handicap run. Has a sharp turn of foot if held up but also a poor starter, which is a big concern in a big field. Outsider to watch if market speaks positively.

Others (MS MESSI, PRINCESS RABAB, RAUZAN) – All have major fitness/form questions or are returning from long absences. PRINCESS RABAB interesting on old AW form but off 465 days.

Summary

This is a well-contested staying handicap, and the strong pace is likely to favour those who can settle and finish late. POSITIVE ENERGY is a progressive type with stamina, form, and connections firmly in his favour. PREPARATIONS also makes strong appeal with improving form and a good tactical fit. DESERT FRIEND has solid staying form and is a reliable yardstick with place prospects, particularly on this track.

Smart Play (Professional Punter’s View)

Win Bet: POSITIVE ENERGY – progressive profile, trainer/jockey combination strong, and race setup looks ideal.

Each-Way Saver: PREPARATIONS – improving type, ran well last time, likely to be in the mix if race unfolds as forecast.

Keep an eye on market support for POWERFUL HOOK HEAD and TASSAROLO, both of whom are capable of outperforming ratings if primed.
