Race Conditions & Tactical Setup
This is a Class 4 staying handicap hurdle contested over an extended 3m2f on good ground. There are 11 declared runners, ensuring three places for each-way purposes. The pace forecast is even, with no guaranteed front-runner. Dear Ralphy is likely to race handily, as is Keel Strand, while others such as Borderline and Spitalfield typically come from further back. Newton Abbot’s sharp nature suits speed-stayers, and horses proven to travel fluently and handle a tactical race are favoured.

Contenders, Dangers & Angles
Keel Strand (TFR 111p)
Lightly raced 5-y-o from Paul Nicholls, returned from wind surgery to win a novice over 2m6f in decisive fashion. Steps up in trip, unexposed, and carries a progressive profile. Newton Abbot is a logical place to test stamina. Promising and well-suited tactically. Likely to lead or race prominently.
Dear Ralphy (TFR 116)
Course winner and model of consistency in similar events this season. His racing style (handy) suits the track and today’s pace setup, but his finishing effort has looked vulnerable when asked to assert. Track suits; rated solid but exposed.
Gateau de Miel (TFR 115+)
Revitalised by a stable switch, winning a chase off the same mark last week. Back to hurdles here, with similar stamina test. Often raced in headgear but ran well without cheekpieces last time. Potential threat if he backs up that effort.
Spitalfield (TFR 115x)
Returned with a good second at Worcester and can improve on that. Jumps poorly under pressure and may need luck from a hold-up position. Stays well but not especially fluent. Suited to the trip but not the most straightforward.
Presenting Yeats (TFR 117§)
Won well in April but has regressed sharply since. TFR includes a suspect boost (§ symbol) and this temperamental gelding is inconsistent. Likely held up and dependent on pace collapsing. Track may not play to his strengths.
Jack’s Jury (TFR 114)
Two placed efforts at Ffos Las suggest he stays well and needs a strong pace. Consistent enough, unproven beyond 3m. Still relatively unexposed. One for extra place punters if price allows.
Borderline (TFR 115)
Shaped okay on seasonal return, though he lacks a convincing finish and can be difficult. Inconsistent jumper. One-paced but not without ability – may sneak into frame.
Danzini (TFR 113)
Yard profitable with single runners on card; returns after 218 days and can run well fresh. Previous Fontwell win gives hope, but mark looks about right. Needs market support to figure. Interesting at longer prices.
Others – Ratings below 113
Dorrells Pierji: 12yo, little recent form, seems regressive. Not expected to feature.
I Love You Sivola: Pulled up in 3 of last 4, well out of form.
Pirates’ Tale: Non-runner.

Summary
A competitive staying handicap where Keel Strand arrives with the strongest profile, albeit with stamina to prove. His tactical position and recent improvement give him an edge. Dear Ralphy is consistent but possibly vulnerable, while Gateau de Miel is the most dangerous of the rest if reproducing his chase win back over hurdles.
Smart Play
Win Bet – Keel Strand (Progressive and unexposed, could improve again)
Each-Way Saver – Gateau de Miel (Interesting angle switching back to hurdles from the same mark)
Watch the market for support on Danzini returning from a break, and for any strong moves on second-time starters like Keel Strand.
