15:15 Newcastle, Saturday 28 June 2025Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) | 2m 56y | 4yo+ | Tapeta | £81,000

·

Pace: Even tempo expected.
Draw: No bias identified on the Newcastle Tapeta track.

Race Overview & Tactical Considerations
This is a high-class staying handicap attracting seasoned stayers and lightly-raced improvers. With a fair pace predicted, the race may not suit habitual hold-up performers requiring a strong gallop, such as Spirit Mixer. Conversely, types who can race prominently or track the pace, such as Golden Rules and East India Dock, could find conditions more favourable.

Leading Contenders

Who’s Glen (TFR 116) – Unexposed over staying trips and shaped with significant promise when fifth in the Chester Cup, where he was set plenty to do. Progressive profile and a strong stayer on Tapeta. Balding’s 26% Newcastle strike rate adds confidence. Rates highly on all counts.

East India Dock (TFR 113) – Strong stayer who won the Chester Cup and was unlucky in running when sixth in the Ascot Stakes. Well proven at the trip and yard in flying form (James Owen 22% with runners over 10f+). Tactically versatile and well suited to today’s tempo.

Pappano (TFR 110) – From the Mullins yard, which won the race in 2018 with Lagostovegas. Lightly raced on the Flat, ran well in a Listed race at Ascot in 2024 before a novicey effort over hurdles. Big player if retaining ability. Second start back and may come on plenty.

Main Dangers

Golden Rules (TFR 117) – Runner-up in this race in 2023 off a 4lb higher mark. Shaped as if the run was needed after 21 months off in March. Potentially very well handicapped, but needs to show he’s back to form.

Spirit Mixer (TFR 114) – In good form this season, but tactically dependent and likely to be held up. Needs luck in running and the right race tempo, which may not materialise here.

Zanndabad (TFR 112) – Shaped better than result at the Curragh after a break. Strong Chester Cup third in 2024 and represents the shrewd A.J. Martin yard. Trainer has gone close in this before.

Interesting Outsiders

Manxman (TFR 112) – Poor run at Royal Ascot but had been progressive prior. Likes Tapeta and has form at the trip. Could bounce back.

Asgard’s Captain (TFR 115) – Travelled well and finished with running left at Epsom last time. Yet to prove stamina at this trip but shapes like he could stay and is well drawn.

Tribal Star (TFR 113) – Usually makes the running. Big run at Newcastle in the AW Marathon Final earlier this year. Tactically well-suited to an even gallop and worth monitoring.

Timeform Trends & Comments

Golden Rules (Timeform Flag: “Holds Entries”) – has back form in this race and may be peaking.

East India Dock and Who’s Glen identified in Timeform verdict as leading players.

Watch the market for Pappano (106-day absence) and Shajak (158 days off).

Spirit Mixer is a clear “needs luck” hold-up type.

James Owen has multiple runners and a rising strike-rate; could signal intention.

Who’s Glen represents a 26% trainer strike rate at Newcastle since 2021.

Summary
This year’s Plate looks a quality renewal with unexposed stayers and proven handicappers colliding. The race tempo may not suit every runner, making positioning and tactical nous key. With strong Newcastle stats, an ideal profile and a progressive form-line, Who’s Glen appeals most. East India Dock is tough and in-form, while Pappano could easily outrun his odds on just his second Flat start for Mullins.

Smart Play
Win Bet – Who’s Glen (firm staying profile, track/trainer stats, improving)
