A highly competitive renewal of this valuable Class 2 sprint handicap over five furlongs on the straight Tapeta track at Newcastle. A strong pace is anticipated, with several habitual front-runners drawn across the track. Crucially, there is a notable draw bias against low numbers, while prominent runners tend to be favoured over this course and distance, despite today’s expected strong early gallop.
Leading Contenders
BERGERAC (Adjusted Rating: 110) – Last year’s winner and arrives in excellent heart, having won a strong turf handicap at Hamilton (5f, good to soft). Suited by a prominent role and has won on Tapeta. Drawn in 11 and races near the speed – an ideal tactical fit. Progressive again since early season and looks a major player.
VINTAGE CLARETS (109) – Won this in 2023 and placed several times this season, including a solid fifth in the Epsom Dash. Comes here fit and in form, and is best at this trip. Effective on Tapeta and well-handicapped on old form. Can sometimes start slowly but well drawn in 12 and has trainer Richard Fahey, who has won this race twice.
PADDY’S DAY (106) – Five-time Newcastle winner and still on a fair mark. Might not have been suited by turf last time and returns to his optimum conditions. Drawn in 5 is not ideal, and while he’s prominent, the low berth may leave him vulnerable. Trainer Nigel Tinkler has a good record with sprinters.
ELEGANT ERIN (107) – Consistent mare, runner-up three times in a row. All those recent runs have been in small-field turf events, but she’s proven on Tapeta and won here last year. Likely to be held up from stall 2 – may need luck in running. Strong-finisher type, ideally needs pace to collapse.
Main Dangers
WOOLHAMPTON (108) – Multiple turf wins in 2024, often slowly away and races from off the pace. Likely to get a solid gallop to run at, but hold-up tactics can be compromised on this surface unless they fan wide. Has form on Tapeta and her Windsor fifth to Regal Envoy was respectable.
BADRI (107) – Course winner, best run this year came last time at Epsom (3rd in a 6f handicap). Races on or close to the speed, and high draw (stall 1) is problematic given draw bias. Trainer Michael Herrington is in form, and the horse is fully fit.
Interesting Outsiders
MOONSTONE BOY (109) – Largely consistent and won at Carlisle in May. Fifth at Chester was better than bare result after a slow start. Strong-finisher and acts well on AW. Dangerous if getting early position from stall 8 but may require luck.
MONKS DREAM (107) – Four career wins at Newcastle, although last two runs have been below form. Off 61 days – market watch essential. Still has upside if bouncing back, and suited by surface and trip.
JAKAJARO (111) – Highest adjusted rating in the field but well below best in latest start. Formerly trained in Ireland, shaped as if needing the run on stable debut. May need further and has more to prove on Tapeta. Market confidence would be significant.
Trainer Trends
Richard Fahey has trained two winners in the past eight renewals (Vintage Clarets is his representative).
Last year’s winner Bergerac is back off a 4lb higher mark and in similar form.

Summary
This year’s Gosforth Park Cup shapes as a strong contest with several formful, track-suited sprinters. Bergerac looks well placed to repeat last year’s success, arriving off a win and drawn high to dominate. Vintage Clarets, a previous winner, has his ideal conditions again, while Paddy’s Day is a serious threat back on his preferred surface.
Smart Play
Win bet – Bergerac: Strong tactical fit, recent win, proven course form.
Each-way saver – Vintage Clarets: Back at the track he thrives on, has trainer angle and competitive recent form.
Keep an eye on Monks Dream for market support returning after a short break – he’s a track specialist with upside if ready.
