16:03 THIRSK – WEATHERBYS EPASSPORT HANDICAP (DIV II) (CLASS 5, 7F, 4YO+, 0–70)Ground: Good to Firm (Good in places)

·

Pace: Even | Draw Bias: Slight advantage to high numbers

Pace/Draw Analysis:
This looks set to be run at an even gallop with no out-and-out trailblazer, although Leap Day is usually prominent. The high draw bias at Thirsk under today’s conditions could aid those drawn 6 and above. With a lack of front-end competition, a handy or on-pace position should prove beneficial, especially with the field unlikely to overcook it early.

Main Contenders:

Twilight Diamond (87, Draw 2) – Lightly raced 4yo with only six career starts, his best form has come on the all-weather, but he wasn’t disgraced at Doncaster and now drops to a career-low mark. Has pace to go forward and stays 7f. Trainer O’Meara’s strike rate and Tudhope’s record at Thirsk are significant. Carries a “promising” profile.

Leap Day (85, Draw 8) – Regular front-runner who can make the most of a positive draw. He’s consistent at this level but has been turned over after trading short in-running before. Drops in grade and returns to a course where he underperformed last year but is tactically well suited. Needs to bounce back from a below-par York effort.

Emily Post (82, Draw 3) – Recent form has been solid with a good fourth at Wetherby. Needs luck from a mid-to-low draw given her tendency to be held up. Her overall profile is exposed but stable in form and has run well under similar conditions.

Patontheback (84, Draw 9) – Comes here quickly after a disappointing run but was a good third prior to that. Has a turn of foot but will need pace to run at from a wide draw. Acts well on fast ground and looks a live each-way player if bouncing back.

Dangerous Outsiders:

Mereside Madness (84, Draw 6) – On a lengthy break (94 days), so fitness is a question, but won well in February at Newcastle and has since been tried in deeper races. Can sit off the pace and pounce if ready, but market check essential.

Langholm (82, Draw 1) – Multiple course wins including at this venue. In-form but poorly drawn in 1 which could be a significant disadvantage given the shape of this race. Has run creditably of late, but lacks tactical toe from that box.

Electric Avenue (82, Draw 4) – Can go forward and stays this trip, but form inconsistent and trainer cold. Best watched unless significant market support arrives late.

Other Runners:

Carnival Zain (84, Draw 5) – Course winner but appears regressive at 8yo. Better at a mile now and may find 7f sharp in this setup. Holds a Timeform “Horse for Course” flag.

Reputation (82, Draw 7) – Very exposed 12yo and returning from 153 days off. Hard to make a strong case despite previous CD win. Another who will likely need the run.

Trends & Trainer Watch:

No previous winners of this race, but O’Meara and Tudhope are a notable combination (23% strike rate at Thirsk).

Horses drawn 6+ have a good record under current conditions.

Look out for market support for Mereside Madness off a layoff and for second-start handicappers like Twilight Diamond.

Summary:
This is a low-grade handicap where positioning and pace could prove decisive. Twilight Diamond is progressive, lightly raced, and now handicapping from a low mark under a strong rider. Leap Day’s pace profile and high draw are positives if bouncing back. Patontheback appeals as a consistent each-way option with a recent quick return suggesting he’s holding his form.

Smart Play: Win: Twilight Diamond – unexposed, trainer/jockey combo, drawn to go forward
Each-Way Saver: Patontheback – solid performer, quick turnaround, drawn well

Market watching is key for Mereside Madness (layoff) and Twilight Diamond (second handicap start).
