19:05 Bangor-on-Dee – Overton Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 4, 2m 145y, Good to Firm in places, 4yo+)

·

Pace and Draw Angles (NH):
Pace forecast is even, but prominently ridden runners are favoured at this course and in these conditions. That bodes well for Gower Prince, who typically races forward. In contrast, Barranco’s hold-up style may require luck in running, especially reverting to hurdles.

Contenders Overview

Barranco – Suitability rating: 8/10
Progressive over fences since joining Greenall/Guerriero and now returns to hurdles off a 7 lb lower mark. Strong claims if transferring that improvement back to timber. A hold-up type, which is a slight concern at Bangor. Proven on good to firm and form is recent.
Timeform Horse In Focus.

Sharp Glance – Suitability rating: 7/10
Lightly raced mare from Alan King’s yard, steadily progressive with a win and second in novice company this spring. 103 mark is fair for this handicap debut. Bred to stay further, and if the pace lifts, could be running on.

Guillaume – Suitability rating: 6/10
Lightly raced this season, form inconsistent. Handicap mark looks workable if he can reproduce his Kelso second. Good jockey booking in Brian Hughes boosts confidence. Not obviously progressive, but interesting if market speaks.

Lady Buttercup – Suitability rating: 7/10
Big step forward on seasonal return when third in mares handicap after a break. Still unexposed, could improve again. Promising type but needs to settle better. Another who may need luck with her running style.

Never Seen Again – Suitability rating: 5/10
Lightly raced, modest form but shaping better since switching yards. Often up with the pace which suits here. Needs improvement, but not impossible.

Trafalgar Square – Suitability rating: 6/10
Won a weak race two starts back. That form is below this level but bounced back from earlier poor runs. Yard among winners lately. Back from a short break.

Gower Prince – Suitability rating: 5/10
Has regressed this year over fences. Now back over hurdles, where he remains unexposed, and likes to front-run. Could exploit pace bias if able to settle. Interesting if bouncing back, but overall form has tailed off.

Summary & Smart Play

A small-field novices’ handicap with a few unexposed types. Barranco has the standout profile based on his recent chase improvement and a lenient hurdles mark. If handling the track from off the pace, he sets the standard. Sharp Glance is the main danger, with Lady Buttercup the most interesting outsider on recent progress.

Smart Play:
Win Bet – Barranco
*Each-Way Saver (if market allows) – Lady Buttercup (for those seeking value on a likely improver)
