18:30 Bellewstown – QuinnBet Bellewstown Handicap Hurdle (2m 1f 40y, €36,000, 4yo+, Good)

·

Pace Forecast: Very Strong – With known front-runners like Hasten Slowly, Bowensonfire, and Kaptain Bay, a relentless gallop is expected. This could disadvantage habitual pressers but favour those who are held up or ridden cold.
Draw/Track Angle: Bellewstown’s tight right-handed track places a premium on agility and balance. Ground should be riding good, which is favourable for speed horses but mitigated here by the expected strong pace.

Leading Contenders

Bowensonfire (144, 6/10) – Progressive 5yo with a solid profile and a good effort when 3rd to Tonaghneave Well at Downpatrick under joint-fav backing. Generally goes forward, which could be a negative in this overrun pace scenario. However, Jack Kennedy up is a notable positive and Elliott has trained 3 recent winners of this race.

Zoffman (132p, 7/10) – Smart Flat form this season (staying on over 14f) suggests stamina reserves. Well backed for a novice last time but didn’t settle. Off a fair mark for first handicap hurdle. Promising profile, especially if they ride him with patience.

Ballysax Hank (141, 8/10) – Major player on the figures. Shaped very well in a red-hot Punchestown race behind Thanksforthehelp. Has soft-ground form, stamina for 2½m, and scope for more. Needs to settle early off what should be a breakneck pace.

My Gaffer (140, 7/10) – Hard fit, very consistent, strong travelling winner at Killarney. Raced over further and handles this ground. Possibly vulnerable to improvers but rates solidly with no obvious holes in profile.

Stuntman Steve (138, 6/10) – Tough and improving but unproven beyond sharp 2m. Game win last time at Listowel but this is a deeper race and he may find late closers sweeping by.

Mercury Mission (142, 7/10) – Will be suited by pace collapse. Disappointed latest behind Bowensonfire, but that was a slowly-run race. Better when allowed to settle and come through runners. Tongue tie and cheekpieces on – dangerous sleeper.

Interesting Outsiders

Theflyingbee (139, 6/10) – Got the job done well in a Downpatrick mares’ handicap and has strong course credentials. Relishes a test, but might be caught out for tactical speed in this deeper race.

Black Heather (139, 5/10) – Backable each-way at a price. Third to Sunchart on penultimate start reads well. Didn’t jump great latest but this smaller field and pace collapse scenario could play to strengths.

Toll Stone (139, 5/10) – Has touched low in running before, a sign of potential if placement is right. Yet he’s been off 230 days and is best watched unless strong market move emerges.

First Dare (140, 6/10) – Close second to Stuntman Steve latest. Capable of going one better, though vulnerable to classier or more progressive types.

Market Watch

Bowensonfire: First-time booking of J W Kennedy; if backed, that’s a key signal.

Zoffman: Second run after a mid-season Flat campaign – if market speaks again, very interesting.

Toll Stone: Returning from long break. In-running market support would be significant.

Mercury Mission: Watch for a drift. Trainer cold, but setup ideal.

Summary

A fast-run 2m1f handicap with stacks of pace. Hold-up runners and those with 2½m stamina are best suited here. Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy have excellent records in this race, so Bowensonfire cannot be dismissed despite potential tactical drawbacks. Ballysax Hank looks the best blend of proven form, fitness, and tactical match. Zoffman and Mercury Mission are promising types with strong profiles under this test.

Smart Play

Win Bet – Ballysax Hank (proven stamina, latest effort strong, progressive profile)
Each-Way Saver – Mercury Mission (likely underestimated, strong pace scenario in favour)

Keep an eye on Zoffman in the market – a drift or support would clarify intent.
