14:00 Ayr – Handicap (Class 6, 0–65), 1m2f, 3yo+Going: Good to Soft (Soft in places)

·

Draw Bias: Low favoured
Pace Forecast: Even | Pace Angle: Prominent runners favoured

Race Setup & Tactical Landscape:

With a field of 14 declared, a solid pace is anticipated, favouring those racing handily. Historically, low draws at Ayr over this trip have been advantageous on softish ground, and front-to-midfield runners can dictate if not overly pressed. Timeform highlights Sure And Stedfast as tactically suited, while Say What You See may be vulnerable given his hold-up style.

Leading Contenders & Profile Types:

CAPTAIN HANLEY (IRE) – Rating: 71 | Draw 4 | Score: 7/10
Shaped well at Down Royal under an interrupted run and was finishing strongly. Class drop, low draw and a tongue-tie retained all help. Trainer Adrian McGuinness has a strong one-runner stat in Britain, but the stable is cold. More solid than sexy, but suited to conditions and trip.

HILL O RUE – Rating: 70 | Draw 9 | Score: 8/10
Progressive 3yo who won at Carlisle over 9f and shaped as though further would suit. Can improve again at 10f and should stay. The draw is not ideal, and his slow-starting trait needs managing. Promising type and has more scope than most.

SURE AND STEDFAST (IRE) – Rating: 74 | Draw 2 | Score: 7/10
Unexposed at this trip and caught the eye at Hamilton, staying on with running left. Timeform pace map gives a favourable read for today’s setup. Trainer Ewan Whillans in hot form, and this looks a realistic winning opportunity for a fair maiden stepping up in trip.

SAY WHAT YOU SEE (IRE) – Rating: 72 | Draw 6 | Score: 6/10
Strong-finishing third at Hamilton over 8.3f. Worth another go at this trip but may get caught in traffic; hold-up style is a negative tactically. Fair mark, though, and remains of interest in calmer waters.

PENELOPE’S SISTER (IRE) – Rating: 72 | Draw 7 | Score: 6/10
Inconsistent but capable; won decisively here earlier this season. May have been flattered by the ease of that win but goes well at Ayr and any softening will help. Needs things to fall right from mid-division.

Interesting Outsiders & Potential Upsetters:

NATURALIA – Rating: 71 | Draw 10 | Score: 6/10
In-form yard. Fourth last time in a fair Hamilton event and now drops back to her optimum distance. Consistent at this level but vulnerable to improvers.

TARTARAGHAN (IRE) – Rating: 70 | Draw 12 | Score: 5/10
Better than the bare result at Leopardstown. Draw is a negative, but he likes to go forward and could bag a good early pitch if breaking well. Risky, but not without a squeak.

WE STILL BELIEVE (IRE) – Rating: 71 | Draw 8 | Score: 5/10
Has been running well in patches and was a CD winner here in 2024. Can run well when on song, but he’s not the most reliable and is usually held up, which may not be ideal today.

Runners Returning From Breaks Over 90 Days:

None. But watch market moves for 3yo second-time handicappers – both Sure And Stedfast and Hill O Rue fit that category and have progressive profiles.

Summary:

The race lacks depth in quality, but there are several with clear tactical or form-related upside. Hill O Rue remains the most progressive runner and is likely to stay further. Sure And Stedfast has a favourable draw, trip, and pace setup, and could be ready to strike now upped in distance for a hot stable. Captain Hanley looks well handicapped on Irish form and is another who could come late into contention, but the wide draw tempers enthusiasm slightly.

Smart Play (Top Two Bets):

Win – Hill O Rue: Progressive 3yo who has the strongest form and profile, likely to stay and still improving.

Each-Way – Sure And Stedfast: Well drawn and unexposed over 10f; shaped better than the result last time, and market support would be notable.

Each-way terms apply with 14 runners declared.
