13:50 Newmarket (July) – Bahrain Trophy Stakes (Group 3) – 1m5f – 3yo – £113,420 – Good to Firm (Good in places)

·

Pace Forecast: Very Weak
Draw Bias: Not significant in a small field over this trip.

Pace Angles: With a slowly-run race expected, those racing close to the pace may hold a tactical advantage. SCANDINAVIA is well-positioned tactically, while NIGHTIME DANCER could be compromised from off the pace.

Contender Analysis

Strongest Contenders:

SCANDINAVIA (9/10): Lightly raced colt who shaped very well in the Queen’s Vase (5th, beaten 1¼L) and rallied strongly late. He will stay further, is bred to progress, and is partnered by Ryan Moore for Aidan O’Brien. The anticipated slow pace is ideal for his prominent racing style.

FURTHUR (8/10): Took a big step forward when second in the Queen’s Vase behind Carmers, having previously underperformed at Chester. Stays well, should improve again, and has a top jockey/trainer combo in Murphy and Balding.

Main Danger:

NIGHTIME DANCER (8/10): Unsuited by the run of the race in the Derby (last early, strong late work). Slight concern that today’s tactical setup could again find him at a disadvantage if they crawl early. He will stay 1¾m but may need an honest pace to show best.

Others:

HALLELUJAH U (6/10): Outran odds when sixth in the Queen’s Vase, well held by the leading trio but stayed on. Honest and straightforward, though likely to be outclassed for win purposes.

TITANIUM EMPEROR (5/10): Seventh in the Queen’s Vase and appeared to not fully stay 1¾m. On breeding he has class but may be better at shorter and could struggle to land a blow here.

Form, Suitability & Ratings (out of 10)

Horse Suitability Comments

Scandinavia 9/10 Stays, suited by slow pace, top connections, improving
Furthur 8/10 Proven stayer, progressing, should go well
Nightime Dancer 8/10 Smart, but hold-up tactics a worry in small, slow-run race
Hallelujah U 6/10 Game type, but others stronger on form
Titanium Emperor 5/10 May not stay, pedigree suggests best over shorter trips

Private Tissue Estimate:

Scandinavia – 6/4

Furthur – 5/2

Nightime Dancer – 9/2

Hallelujah U – 10/1

Titanium Emperor – 14/1

Summary:

A tactical contest in which race position may prove decisive. Scandinavia has shown steady progression and shaped better than the bare result at Royal Ascot. He is suited by conditions and should be hard to pass if allowed to dictate. Furthur continues to improve and can pose the main threat. Nightime Dancer has class but needs a stronger tempo than he’s likely to get.

Smart Play:

Win – SCANDINAVIA (tactically advantaged, proven stamina, progressive)

Each-Way – FURTHUR (solid Group form, will stay well, improving type)

This is a race where tactical nous and track position will be critical—expect the front-runner to hold sway if allowed an easy time of it.
