15:35 Newmarket (July) – Princess of Wales’s Stakes (Group 2, 1m4f, 3yo+, Good to Firm)

·

PACE & DRAW ANGLES:

No draw bias at this trip on the July course.

A slow pace is likely, which should favour the more tactical or strong travellers like Palladium, especially over those needing a solid gallop like Arabian Crown.

STRONGEST CONTENDERS:

GHOSTWRITER (125): Very smart colt and Group 1-placed. Has run well in Dubai and Royal Ascot (3rd in Hardwicke), and won the Royal Lodge here as a juvenile. Handles quick ground and races prominently, a plus in a tactical five-runner race. Proven and in top form.

PALLADIUM (120): Former German Derby winner who was a strong-finishing 4th in the Hardwicke. That form ties him closely with Ghostwriter. Lightly raced and improving under John & Thady Gosden. Well suited to a tactical test and stays the trip strongly.

WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE (117): The sole 3yo getting 10lb, he ran well in the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot and might progress further. Has a good turn of foot but still shaping up to his peak.

EL CORDOBES (116): Mixed efforts recently. Impressive winner at Newmarket in May but was outpaced in listed company last time. More needed to reverse form with top two.

ARABIAN CROWN (117): Reappeared below form and lacks tactical speed, which is a negative in this small field. Needs a stronger pace and possibly easier ground.

Palladium – 5/2

Wimbledon Hawkeye – 9/2

El Cordobes – 7/1

Arabian Crown – 10/1

SUMMARY:

This Group 2 contest features closely matched older horses, with Ghostwriter and Palladium having already clashed at Royal Ascot. Ghostwriter has Group 1 form and is tactically versatile, while Palladium is a strong stayer who will enjoy any gallop increase late. Wimbledon Hawkeye, the only 3yo, receives weight and remains unexposed but lacks a clear edge against seasoned rivals.

SMART PLAY:

Win Bet – GHOSTWRITER (proven, top form, tactically suited)

Saver – PALLADIUM (progressive, suited to race shape)
