16:10 Newmarket (July) – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2, 6f, 2yo, Good to Firm)

·

PACE & DRAW ANGLES:

Those racing prominently are typically favoured on this part of the July Course.

A weak pace is forecast, so those with tactical speed and drawn away from the low numbers are at an advantage.

Country Artiste and Crimson Rose may benefit from racing more prominently, while Princess Billyboy risks being disadvantaged if held up.

STRONGEST CONTENDERS:

NIGHT SHINING (92p, Ryan Moore/George Boughey): Cost 475,000gns and is entered in the Lowther Stakes. A sister to two 2yo winners, she’s bred for this trip, yard has a good juvenile record, and Ryan Moore is booked. Top pedigree and profile.

CRIMSON ROSE (77p, William Buick/Charlie Appleby): Green but stayed on well when third on debut at Chelmsford. With the benefit of that run, this daughter of a smart sprinter is expected to step forward. Appleby has an excellent record in this race.

COUNTRY ARTISTE (83, Rossa Ryan/Clive Cox): Improved a lot from debut to chase home a smart winner at Newbury, shaping as one to follow. That was a strongly run race, and she stayed on well.

HARLEQUIN ANGEL (81, David Egan/Jane Chapple-Hyam): Ran second to the same filly who beat Crimson Rose. Has some early pace, though not particularly well drawn low.

INTERESTING OUTSIDERS:

ENAMORUS (Oisin Murphy/Hugo Palmer): Nicely bred, related to useful performers. Respected on debut with top jockey booked.

WELCOME RETREAT: 66/1 to 20/1 improver at Newmarket last time, and another step forward might bring her into frame contention.

LADY LUCKY VEGAS: From a quietly profitable small yard on debut, will improve, but faces tough competition today.

SUMMARY:

A warm maiden where Night Shining stands out on paper with a top-class pedigree, sales price, Group race entry, and Ryan Moore up. Crimson Rose is sure to improve for her debut and comes from a stable that targets this meeting. Country Artiste ran well in a big field and should be competitive again, especially if she adopts a prominent position.

SMART PLAY:

Win Bet – NIGHT SHINING (promising, well-bred, strong profile)

Each-Way Saver – CRIMSON ROSE (progressive, likely improver with top connections)
