20:40 Ffos Las – Furnance RFC Handicap (Class 6, 4yo+, 1m6f, 0–55, Good to Firm in places)

·

Field Size: 6 runners (3 declared non-runners)
Pace Forecast: Uncontested
Draw Bias: Not applicable over this extended trip

Tactical Setup & Suitability

Going Suitability: All runners have shown form on good or good-to-firm ground.

Field Size Suitability: Small field likely to be tactical; benefits those able to sit handy or dictate.

Forecast Pace Suitability: Lack of pace may hinder hold-up horses (Mujid, Cogital), and favour those with early speed or tactical gears (Black Smoke, Endofastorm).

Class Suitability: All are regulars at this level; exposed but genuine in the grade.

Track Suitability: Cogital ran well here last time; Black Smoke also scored recently at this track. Stayers typically do well on this galloping layout.

Distance Suitability: All proven over at least 1¾m or further. No stamina doubts.

Temperament Suitability: Mujid can start slowly and needs a test; Cogital also held up. Tactical scenario may not suit.

Trainer Suitability: Loughnane (Black Smoke) and Llewellyn (Cogital) experienced in handling older stayers.

Jockey Suitability: Probert (Cogital) has a 23% strike rate at this track. Greatrex and Hornby solid riders.

Leading Contenders

BLACK SMOKE (Score: 8/10) – Won decisively over C&D last week; back quickly under a penalty. Well positioned tactically in small field. Proven at the trip, ground and venue. Recent win came at value odds. Proven.

COGITAL (7.5/10) – Much improved effort latest here; down to career-low mark. Small field likely to be run at dawdle, which could test his usual hold-up style. Still, if the pace lifts, his stamina will be a big asset. Resurgent.

ENDOFASTORM (6.5/10) – Races prominently and could control things if she wants to. Back form shows she stays well. Sixth at Bath not a disgrace, and this is easier. Positionally advantaged.

MUJID (6/10) – On a decent mark and dual turf winner last summer (including here), but has disappointed and returns from a long layoff (219 days). Needs pace. Watch market. Risky but not without hope.

Private Tissue Estimate (Top 4)

Black Smoke – 7/4

Cogital – 5/2

Endofastorm – 9/2

Mujid – 7/1

Summary

With three non-runners thinning the field to just four, this becomes a tactical event over a long trip – the kind where track position can be everything. Black Smoke arrives in top form, won well over C&D just seven days ago and is tactically versatile. He should go very close again under a penalty. Cogital is perhaps the best stayer in the race, but whether the race is run to suit is the concern. Endofastorm might be the one to take them along and could hang on for a place if allowed an easy lead. Mujid is the market watch angle – returning after a break and usually reliant on a stronger gallop.

Smart Play

Win Bet: BLACK SMOKE – unexposed over staying trips on turf, just won over C&D, ideally suited to likely race setup.

Each-Way Saver: Not applicable (under 8 runners).

The race complexion tilts this toward pace-conscious types. Black Smoke stands out on form, profile, and current wellbeing.
