·

Race Report: 13:50 Newmarket (July) – Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (Listed, Class 1, 1m, 3yo)

Date: Friday 11 July 2025
Distance: 1 mile (straight)
Surface: Turf (Good to Firm)
Winner’s Time: 1m 36.43s (1.67s faster than par)
Field: 7 runners
Pace: True gallop – well above par for class
Closing Section: Strong late splits by winner (FSP 101.56%) confirm energy in reserve

🥇 1st – Opera Ballo

(3yo c, Godolphin, Charlie Appleby | J: William Buick | Draw 7 | SP: 11/8f)
Travelled smoothly off a solid pace, moving easily through the field before striking the front over 1f out and quickly putting the race to bed. Produced the fastest final 2f (12.53s) and recorded a finishing speed of 101.56%, confirming a high cruising speed and decisive turn of foot. Efficiency in stride (avg 7.59m, 2.33 SPS) matches the visual impression — clearly Listed class and ready for Group company.
Rating: +10 lbs on standard Listed scale
Next step: Group 3/Group 2

🥈 2nd – Seagulls Eleven

(3yo c, Roger Teal | Draw 4 | SP: 22/1)
Held up off the strong early pace, stayed on from 2f out to take second without threatening the winner. Massive stride (avg 7.87m, max 8.14m) and low frequency point to a galloping type who fared well in a strongly run mile. Top speed of 41.58mph highest in field. Honest effort with potential for 10f progression.
Rating: +4 lbs
Next step: 10f handicap or Listed try

🥉 3rd – King Of Cities

(3yo c, Kevin Ryan | Draw 2 | SP: 4/1)
Tracked the pace and was briefly short of room before staying on steadily into third. Quickest stride frequency in the race (avg 2.35 SPS) highlights his agile, responsive movement. Looked to be travelling as well as anything 2f out. Ran better than the bare result and remains of interest.
Rating: +5 lbs
Next step: another Listed mile or well-run handicap

4th – Spectacular View (Draw 6 | 28/1)

Took up the running 3f out and injected pace, but paid for it late. Faded to fourth with a finishing speed of 97.71%, confirming the early move cost him. A galloper who needs to dictate steadily to be effective.
Rating: No change
Next: small-field tactical races

5th – Royal Playwright (Draw 3 | 7/2)

Led until 3f out, had little left once headed. Quickest to hit 20mph (2.43s) and most frequent stride rate (max 2.43 SPS), suggesting early effort was overdone. No finishing kick (FSP 98.19%).
Rating: Slight regression
Next: reassess at easier track or slower ground

6th – Arabian Story (Draw 1 | 15/2)

Sweated beforehand, tracked the pace, but offered little when pressure was applied. Sectionals confirm a steady fade (FSP 97.04%) and a mid-race dip in stride efficiency.
Rating: -2 lbs
Next: freshen up, maybe gelding route or drop to handicap

7th – Elarak (Draw 8 | 11/1)

Never a factor. Slowest into stride (2.95s to 20mph) and never landed a blow. Final 2f split (13.34s) was the slowest in the field.
Rating: -3 lbs
Next: handicap mark to drop further

⏱️ Pace & Time Context

  • Time vs. Standard: 1.67s faster than par for the course/class
  • Indicates: Truly run Listed race, no hiding place
  • Winner’s finishing speed: 101.56% – confirms he quickened off a strong pace rather than capitalised on a crawl
  • Field Stride Profiles: Clear distinction between agile/efficient movers (Opera Ballo, King Of Cities) and gallopers (Seagulls Eleven, Spectacular View)

📌 Verdict

A high-quality Listed race run at a true gallop, providing a reliable test of class and stamina. Opera Ballo emerges as a Group horse in waiting, with King Of Cities worth upgrading behind. Seagulls Eleven shaped as a stayer with upside. A race to follow with confidence.
