17:35 STRATFORD – NEXT SUNDAY IS LADIES DAY NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP HURDLE (Class 5, 2m6f7y, £2,640)

·

Conditions & Tactical Outlook: A moderate novice handicap featuring seven runners on good to firm ground. Pace is forecast to be very weak, which should suit those able to race prominently. That gives an edge to MR LE PHILOSOPHE and GRASSHOPPER TIME, while MOKORO and PROPHET SQUEEZE may be poorly positioned if held up.

Main Contenders:

MR LE PHILOSOPHE [104] – Improving since joining James Owen, who has a strong 23% record with staying hurdlers. Looked well ahead of his mark when scoring comfortably at Worcester, and a 6lb rise looks fair. Sharp enough to race handy, and on form, he’s the standout. Still unexposed.

GRASSHOPPER TIME [103] – Has shown modest form overall but shaped well when runner-up at Southwell last time. Tactically adaptable and likely to be forwardly ridden. Unproven as a finisher but remains in the mix in this grade.

GETUPTHEYARD [101] – Consistent if frustrating maiden; placed on last three starts and looked unlucky when collared late at Uttoxeter. Can race up with the pace and stays further than this, which is a plus in a small-field dawdle. Reliable but may lack the improvement of Mr Le Philosophe.

Other Runners:

MOKORO [102] – Showed promise behind Highway One O Five but has failed to build on it. Back from a break and Dan Skelton’s local record (23% at Stratford) is a plus. Tactically may be at a disadvantage in this scenario.

ON THE NOSE – Limited ability and pulled up on return. Difficult to support off that evidence.

HITTHEKETTLE – Absent for nearly a year and pulled up last two starts. Trainer rarely saddles winners at this level.

PROPHET SQUEEZE – No form in maiden hurdles, huge outsider with no compelling evidence to suggest a revival.

Ratings Out of 10:

Horse Score

Mr Le Philosophe 8
Getuptheyard 7
Grasshopper Time 6
Mokoro 5
Hitthekettle 3
On The Nose 2
Prophet Squeeze 1

Trends & Trainer Watch:

James Owen is in sharp summer form and does well with stayers.

Grasshopper Time’s trainer Alex Hales has shown a £17.70 profit to £1 level stake with solo runners.

Watch for any strong market moves on Mokoro, returning off 80 days – he may go better fresh.

Private Tissue Estimate:

Horse Odds

Mr Le Philosophe 6/4
Getuptheyard 3/1
Grasshopper Time 7/2
Mokoro 8/1
Hitthekettle 33/1
On The Nose 50/1
Prophet Squeeze 66/1

Summary:

This looks a prime opportunity for MR LE PHILOSOPHE, who is a promising and progressive stayer from a stable in fine form. He has the tactical pace to dominate in a slowly-run contest. GETUPTHEYARD remains a danger with his consistency and stamina, while GRASSHOPPER TIME could be best of the rest.

Smart Play:

Win Bet: MR LE PHILOSOPHE – Fit, progressive, well-handicapped, and tactically suited.

Each-Way Saver (if betting without favourite): GETUPTHEYARD – Reliable and ready to exploit any slip from the market leader.
