Going: Good (Good to Soft in places) | Field: 15 runners
Pace Forecast: Very Strong | Draw Bias: Against High
Pace and Draw Angles:
This is a large-field sprint handicap with a predicted very strong pace. Front-runners and early pressers are abundant – EYE OF DUBAI, TRILBY, KATS BOB, and DOUBLE RUSH among them – and horses drawn low-to-mid (stalls 1–7) look best positioned given historical draw disadvantage against high numbers here. Hold-up runners or those able to tuck in behind the early charge will be favoured.
Strongest Contenders + Main Dangers + Interesting Outsiders:
DOUBLE RUSH (Promising):
A 3yo on the up with solid form – won impressively at Newmarket, and shaped very well on return at York, left isolated on the flank. Charles Hills is excellent with progressive sprinters and Tudhope has a strong 34% strike rate on favourites. Drawn ideally (stall 5) and tactically versatile, he should get a good tow into the race.
NARIKO (Proven):
Another 3yo, and now 3 wins from last 4 starts, including a last-time success at Goodwood. Tends to track pace or race handily without overdoing it. Nicely drawn (3) and thriving, but the sharp rise in class is a minor query.
JONNY CONCRETE (Progressive):
Beat a few of these at York and backed that up when just behind KATS BOB in a competitive race. Can finish strongly and is well drawn (stall 2), but has hit a career-high mark and this is his biggest test to date.
EYE OF DUBAI (Interesting Outsider / Bounce Back Angle):
Had excuses on all starts this season. Went close in major sprint handicaps last year and is now well-handicapped off 87. The strong pace will suit his sit-and-pounce style. Stall 13 is far from ideal but he can slot in behind the frenetic early fractions.
BERGERAC (Proven):
Won here in June and has solid sprint handicap credentials. Often needs things to fall his way but is drawn fine in stall 6 and has tactical speed to stay out of trouble. Not always the most reliable in deep fields but very capable.
STRIKE RED (Hold-Up Risk):
Often needs everything to go right late, and with the stiff Hamilton finish and strong pace, the race setup is ideal. He’s on a fair mark and could pick up pieces if gaps open.
Runner Scores and Suitability Analysis:
- DOUBLE RUSH: 9/10 – Fast-improving 3yo, good draw, thrives in big fields; very solid profile.
- NARIKO: 8/10 – In form, strong-finishing filly, but this is a classier field than before.
- JONNY CONCRETE: 7/10 – Reliable handicapper, gets his ground and pace setup; stall 2 helps.
- EYE OF DUBAI: 7/10 – Plot horse, well-handicapped, but needs luck from high draw.
- BERGERAC: 6/10 – Back to form and drawn well; not consistent but clearly dangerous.
- STRIKE RED: 6/10 – Needs a late collapse but that’s possible here; not ruled out.
- VENTURE CAPITAL: 5/10 – Fading profile but could sneak into the frame if race falls apart.
- KATS BOB: 4/10 – Prominent style and high draw look bad combination here.
- CROWN BOARD / SOPHIA’S STARLIGHT / MOONSTONE BOY: 3/10 or lower – Poor recent form or unsuited profiles.
Keep an eye on the market for support or big drifts for runners returning from layoffs of 90+ days.
Watch out for in-form sprinters returning quickly; they can be hot.
Each-Way Angles:
With 15 runners declared, this is an ideal race for each-way plays. EYE OF DUBAI and JONNY CONCRETE are both attractively priced and fit the race profile well. STRIKE RED also appeals for those playing from off the speed.
Private Tissue Estimate:
- DOUBLE RUSH – 7/2
- NARIKO – 6/1
- JONNY CONCRETE – 7/1
- BERGERAC – 9/1
- STRIKE RED – 10/1
- EYE OF DUBAI – 10/1
- Others – 12/1+
Market watch advised for runners making their 2nd start.
Summary:
This is a typically fast and furious Scottish Stewards’ Cup. The strong early gallop should blunt the front-runners and bring closers into play. DOUBLE RUSH is a strong win prospect on profile and pace shape. NARIKO and JONNY CONCRETE are solid each-way contenders, while EYE OF DUBAI looks like a big run is brewing off a forgiving mark.
Smart Play:
Win Selection: DOUBLE RUSH – Top-class profile for a race of this nature; peaking at the right time.
Each-Way Saver: EYE OF DUBAI – Strong closer with back-class and now very well treated.
