19:35 Newmarket (July) – Debenhams Handicap (Class 4, 1m2f, 3yo+, 0-85)

·

Going: Good to Firm | Runners: 7
Pace Forecast: Weak
Draw Bias: None

Pace and Draw Angles:

A tactical affair in prospect with no confirmed front-runner. That weak early gallop could compromise hold-up types, particularly Giselles Defence, who’s often slowly away, and Gaassee, who usually races off the pace. Byblos has the best tactical setup, ideally placed to pounce off a steady gallop.

Strongest Contenders + Main Dangers + Interesting Outsiders:

ASMEN WARRIOR (Progressive):
An improving 3yo who beat Night Step last time and looked to have more in hand than the margin suggests. Likely to sit handy or lead in this small field. Comes from a yard (James Owen) whose horses often take a leap forward post-maiden win. Strong claims, especially as he gets 3lb from older rivals.

BYBLOS (Promising):
Highly promising Frankel colt who looked in need of the run at Newmarket on return. Will improve for that, particularly now up in trip, and has strong sectional and pedigree credentials for this 10f. Gosden yard excels mid-season, and this looks a good opportunity to get back on track.

NIGHT STEP (Progressive):
Lightly raced and progressing nicely, dead-heated last time at Lingfield and has improved since a wind op. Drawn to race prominently, which is a bonus in this weakly run race. Strong each-way claims, but might just lack the raw pace of the front two on fast ground.

ANTELOPE (Proven):
Tough type who has done well in handicaps this year, winning twice. Solid fourth at Sandown last time. However, might find one or two too classy now off a career-high mark. Still, not without place hopes.

GAASSEE (Regressive):
Fell out of form with Archie Watson and remains with questions after a quiet run in March. Weak pace isn’t ideal for his late-running style, and market check essential after 135-day absence.

Runner Scores and Suitability Analysis:

  • ASMEN WARRIOR: 9/10 – Upwardly mobile, tactical speed, race likely to suit.
  • BYBLOS: 8/10 – Smart form, needs to settle better, ideal conditions to progress.
  • NIGHT STEP: 7/10 – Consistent improver, just might be vulnerable to classier types.
  • ANTELOPE: 6/10 – Honest, but others have more upside at this level.
  • GISELLES DEFENCE: 5/10 – In-form but pace/track setup not ideal.
  • GAASSEE: 5/10 – Needs pace, fitness doubt, not one to trust.
  • GLOUCESTERSHIRE: 4/10 – Needs much more than shown on return.

Keep an eye on the market for support or big drifts for runners returning from layoffs of 90+ days.
Market watch advised for runners making their second start – BYBLOS fits that profile.

Each-Way Angles:

No each-way play advised – only 7 runners, 2 places.

Private Tissue Estimate:

  • ASMEN WARRIOR – 5/2
  • BYBLOS – 3/1
  • NIGHT STEP – 4/1
  • ANTELOPE – 7/1
  • GISELLES DEFENCE – 10/1
  • GAASSEE – 12/1
  • GLOUCESTERSHIRE – 20/1

Summary:

This shapes as a tactical 10f race that should favour horses with early speed and a turn of foot. Asmen Warrior has the momentum and tactical edge, while Byblos is full of untapped potential from a top yard. Night Step offers a solid gauge of form and stays in calculations.

Smart Play:

Win Selection: ASMEN WARRIOR – improving 3yo with ideal setup.
Saver: BYBLOS – could step forward sharply second time up for Gosden.
