2.22 Southwell – Ambitions Personnel Maiden Stakes (Class 5, 3yo+, 6f16y, AW)

·

Pace Angles:
A solid tempo looks likely. Wild Clary has made the running before, Ziggy’s Angel and Grey Jaguar have raced prominently, and Titian Blue typically tracks the leaders. Expect an even to strong pace, which should test stamina late.

Draw Angles:
At Southwell over 6f, lower-middle draws (stalls 2–6) tend to perform best. The draw is neutral to slightly favourable for Titian Blue (stall 8), Maximising (5), and Grey Jaguar (6).

Strongest Contenders, Dangers & Outsiders

Strongest Contenders:

  • Wild ClaryProven. Multiple placed efforts at maiden level with RPRs of 81–83. Outpaced last time but kept on gamely. Can lead or track pace, and looks the most reliable to run to form.
  • Titian BlueProven. Strong handicap form at this trip and on Tapeta. Second here over C&D on penultimate start. Slight class drop and back to a maiden could be the key. Respected.
  • Grey JaguarPromising. No Nay Never colt with a solid debut (RPR 82) when green and staying on. Drop to 6f looks fine given the pace he showed. Scope to progress further.

Main Dangers:

  • MaximisingLikely Improver. Related to winners, and showed best form on third start when keeping on at Yarmouth (RPR 81). Switch to AW is a question mark, but breeding supports it.
  • Fierce FortitudeInteresting debutant. €145,000 purchase by Mehmas out of a Dubawi mare. Yard 80% RTF; lacks experience but looks bred for this job and market could be revealing.

Interesting Outsiders:

  • Ziggy’s AngelLimited. Showed a bit more at Doncaster but was never competitive. Pedigree better than what he’s shown.
  • FantocciaModest. No strong finish in either start but hinted at ability. May need a handicap to show full potential.

Hold-up Risks:
Havana Miss and Lilac Wood look slow early and will need luck if held up. Fantoccia also shaped as one-paced in her two starts.

Runner Scores & Suitability

  • Wild Clary: 8.5/10 – Best proven form, versatile, should cope with Tapeta and is overdue a win.
  • Titian Blue: 8/10 – Peak efforts on Tapeta, well-handicapped, returns to maiden company.
  • Grey Jaguar: 7.5/10 – One good run on debut; likely improver with scope.
  • Maximising: 7/10 – Career-best latest; may do better still, though surface is unproven.
  • Fierce Fortitude: 6.5/10 – Well-bred, expensive; trainer/jockey combo strong. Market will inform.
  • Ziggy’s Angel: 5/10 – Step up needed; likely to find a few too good again.
  • Fantoccia: 4.5/10 – Moderate to date, might need handicaps.
  • Havana Miss: 4/10 – Modest efforts so far; Tapeta no clear plus.
  • Lilac Wood: ? – Unraced; pedigree more middle-distance; low expectations on debut.

Keep an eye on the market for support or big drifts, especially for debutant Fierce Fortitude.
Surface switch to Tapeta can reveal improvement for unexposed types.

Each-Way Angles

  • Maximising – Solid RPR last time, unexposed, and looks the right type to be placed in a maiden of this depth.
  • Grey Jaguar – Scopey, ran well behind a good type. Could run into the frame again.

Private Tissue Estimate

  • Wild Clary – 15/8
  • Titian Blue – 11/4
  • Grey Jaguar – 9/2
  • Maximising – 6/1
  • Fierce Fortitude – 7/1
  • Ziggy’s Angel – 14/1
  • Fantoccia – 20/1
  • Havana Miss – 25/1
  • Lilac Wood – 33/1

Summary + Professional Punter View (Smart Play)

A competitive but winnable maiden. Wild Clary brings the clearest form claims and will take catching. Titian Blue is well suited to this surface and should go close if not getting caught flat-footed again. The rest have plenty to prove, though Grey Jaguar looks progressive.

Smart Play:

  • Win Selection: Wild Clary – a rock-solid maiden who sets the standard and has tactical versatility.
  • Each-Way Saver: Maximising – ready to step forward again after an encouraging third, bred to go on.
