5.35 Newton Abbot “Thankyou To All Our Armed Forces” Handicap Chase (Class 4, 2m4f216y, Good, 0–115)

·

Race Conditions, Pace & Draw Angles

  • Class 4 handicap chase, £11k total prize money, for 4yo+ rated up to 117.
  • Trip: just shy of 2m5f on Newton Abbot’s sharp, left-handed track. A speed/stamina balance is required, with emphasis on fluent jumping.
  • Pace: Several pace-forcers (Time To Bite, Limerick Leader, Fat Sam) – likely a good even gallop, possibly strong if all commit. Prominent racers often do well here; hold-ups can struggle unless the leaders overdo it.
  • No stalls draw (jumps), but positioning is key given the sharp bends.

Strongest Contenders

Time To Bite (Chris Honour / Bryan Carver) – Proven / Revitalised
Back-to-back chase wins in spring and returned with a dominant 57l romp here last month, taking advantage of being well-in after a hurdles run. Jumps boldly when on song, thrives at Newton Abbot, and looks to have been transformed by blinkers. Raised again but retains upside; big player if allowed an easy lead.

Magic Seven (Jonjo O’Neill / Richie McLernon) – Progressive / Unexposed over fences
Solid novice chase form: runner-up at Stratford, fair 5th at Worcester over a longer trip. Still learning but mark of 112 looks workable. Jumping can sharpen up, but profile suggests improvement to come. Step back to a sharp 2m5f could suit.

Theonlywayiswessex (Alan King / Tom Cannon) – Progressive / Consistent
Has taken well to fences, a Plumpton winner and two-time placed this summer. Ran well in defeat last twice, finding one too strong. Stays this trip and is reliable; perhaps not thrown in but gives his running.

Aslukwoodhavit (Mickey Bowen / Sean Bowen) – Classy Irish recruit, now settling in
Placed on last two UK starts, including C&D third here in July. Irish form included a novice chase win over 2m. Mark of 117 demands plenty, but connections are in form and cheekpieces have sharpened him up.

Main Dangers

Limerick Leader (Alison Thorpe / James Bowen) – Recent winner, consistent
Won a C&D handicap in June and held his form since, including two seconds. Stays well, usually races up with the pace, but current mark leaves little room for error.

Scarlet O’Tara (Newland / Insole) – Interesting but risky
Progressive hurdler in 2024 but has pulled up on all three chase starts this summer. Clearly talented but unreliable; stamina at 2m6f may suit better in time.

Trapista (J P McManus / Jonjo) – Capable but fragile
Two chase wins in May, including here, but hasn’t finished in three of last four. If on-song, is well treated, but risky.

Interesting Outsider

Fat Sam (Chris Down / James Davies)
11yo veteran who often places but rarely wins nowadays. Still competitive off 103 and wasn’t far away at Worcester last time. Needs others to underperform but not a total forlorn hope for a place.

Let’s Sail Away (Tom Lacey / Stan Sheppard)
Lightly raced 6yo; promising chase debut when second at Uttoxeter. Scope to improve on just eighth career run. Could easily step forward again.

Runner Scores (Suitability & Track/Trip Fit)

  • Time To Bite – 9/10 thrives here, front-runner, in best form of career.
  • Magic Seven – 8.5/10 improving novice, trip suits, scope off 112.
  • Theonlywayiswessex – 8/10 consistent, reliable, but mark looks fair not lenient.
  • Aslukwoodhavit – 7.5/10 ability there, Bowen factor, but high in weights.
  • Limerick Leader – 7.5/10 genuine, in form, but ceiling reached off 98.
  • Trapista – 7/10 back-class, but unreliable.
  • Let’s Sail Away – 7/10 unexposed, may improve, trainer target race type.
  • Scarlet O’Tara – 6/10 pulled up repeatedly, risky.
  • Fat Sam – 6/10 exposed veteran, place claims only.

Keep an eye on the market for Trapista (JP runner, can be laid out) and Let’s Sail Away (unexposed 6yo, could be strong if supported).

Private Tissue (Guide Odds)

  • Time To Bite – 5/2
  • Magic Seven – 7/2
  • Theonlywayiswessex – 9/2
  • Aslukwoodhavit – 6/1
  • Limerick Leader – 7/1
  • Trapista – 10/1
  • Let’s Sail Away – 10/1
  • Scarlet O’Tara – 16/1
  • Fat Sam – 20/1

Summary & Smart Play

This is a competitive Class 4 with several recent winners and unexposed types. Time To Bite has an outstanding profile at Newton Abbot and is thriving in blinkers; if able to dictate, he’ll be tough to peg back. Magic Seven is still learning but looks well treated and can emerge as a strong challenger. Theonlywayiswessex brings consistency and is a solid each-way option, while Let’s Sail Away has plenty of upside if improving from his chase debut.

Smart Play:

  • Win bet – Time To Bite (course specialist, thriving in current form).
  • Each-way saver – Magic Seven (progressive novice, scope from current mark).
