Newbury 6.25 – Venture Security Handicap (Class 4, 1m, Good to Firm, 3yo+)

·

Pace & Draw

  • Possible contested lead: War Howl (likes to be handy), Sunny Corner (drawn 1, can go forward), and possibly Ruff Justice if connections revert to forcing tactics.
  • Likely strong even pace – should suit those who can settle and finish.
  • Draw: Mile on the straight track, low-to-middle draws generally a slight plus if pace is central. Sunny Corner (1) and North View (3) in ideal spots. Wide stalls (Drifts Away 10, War Howl 9) at a mild disadvantage unless pace collapses.

Strongest Contenders

Drifts Away (OR 78, Draw 10) – Progressive this year, with consistent runs across turf/AW. Forgive York run (bad draw, never involved). Excellent RPR 84 at Yarmouth shows his level. Versatile and rarely runs a bad race. Draw not ideal but has tactical pace. Proven, still progressing.

North View (OR 78, Draw 3, Buick/Boughey) – Eyecatching closer last time at Kempton, proved stamina for 7f+. Newbury C&D winner (’24). Blinkers have sharpened him up, Buick booked. Needs race to fall right but ground/trip look perfect. Promising closer, dangerous if strong pace.

War Howl (OR 80, Draw 9) – Back-to-back wins at Doncaster & Ascot, improving since joining Appleby. Shaped like 1m could suit and arrives in form. Draw wide, but has tactical speed. Progressive 3yo, potential class riser.

Sunny Corner (OR 73, Draw 1) – Back to winning ways at Salisbury last time (RPR 86), career-best. Can be inconsistent but well drawn, handy style suits. Carries penalty but thriving. Resurgent, but needs to back it up.

Main Dangers

Sea Founder (OR 80, Draw 8, Murphy/Hughes) – Lightly raced 3yo, Windsor maiden win franked. Found trouble here LTO but shaped well at Haydock. Breeding points to 1m+ improvement. Unexposed, still scope to step forward. Likely improver.

Herculeus (OR 77, Draw 2) – Won at Nottingham (1m), decent run at Windsor behind Sea Founder. Still learning, fair mark. Inside draw helps. Unexposed and open to progress.

Interesting Outsiders

Beauty By My Side (OR 74, Draw 4, Ryan) – Big run here in July (close 2nd, RPR 81). Forgive Sandown where denied a run. Unlucky more than once, dangerous off current mark if things fall right. EW angle if 8+ runners.

Virtue Patience (OR 72, Draw 5) – Some messy runs but shaped well at Newbury earlier this summer. Has scope for better; trainer not in top form. Squeaks into consideration.

Lesser Chances

  • Tenbob Tommy – Needs further than 1m and still finding his level.
  • Ruff Justice – Looks held off current mark, regressive since Windsor nursery win.
  • Others exposed or inconsistent.

Suitability Scores (out of 10)

  • Drifts Away – 8/10 (consistent, forgiving York run, wide draw only negative)
  • North View – 8/10 (well-handicapped, Buick, ideal draw, needs luck in running)
  • War Howl – 8/10 (progressive, but wide draw a challenge)
  • Sea Founder – 7.5/10 (scopey, but still learning)
  • Sunny Corner – 7/10 (career best last time, but inconsistent)
  • Herculeus – 7/10 (unexposed, may be better at 1m+ soon)
  • Beauty By My Side – 7/10 (unlucky type, EW potential)
  • Virtue Patience – 6/10 (capable, but inconsistent yard/form)
  • Ruff Justice – 5/10 (regressive)
  • Tenbob Tommy – 4/10 (likely wants further)

Private Tissue (my book)

  • North View 7/2
  • Drifts Away 4/1
  • War Howl 9/2
  • Sea Founder 6/1
  • Beauty By My Side 8/1
  • Sunny Corner 8/1
  • Herculeus 10/1
  • Virtue Patience 14/1
  • Ruff Justice 20/1
  • Tenbob Tommy 25/1

Summary & Smart Play

A competitive straight-mile handicap where pace should be strong. North View is the class angle with Buick booked, well drawn, and back to ideal C&D. Drifts Away and War Howl are solid progressive options, while Sea Founder brings unexposed 3yo upside. Beauty By My Side looks the each-way alternative if the field holds up (8+ runners).

Smart Play:

  • Win bet – North View (well drawn closer, Buick factor, C&D form)
  • Each-way saver – Beauty By My Side (unlucky in running, back at her track)
