1.50 Hunters Prestige British EBF Maiden Stakes

Class 4, 1m, Good, 2yo, Win: £5,154

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1Del Maro (GER) (2)313
2Maltese Cross (FR) (2)311

Del Maro (GER) (Total Rating: 313)

  • Recent Form: His last two recorded runs scored 87 (LR) and 29 (2LR). He went close on his debut on the other Newmarket course (1m, good to firm) last month. He showed similar form when third at Doncaster 12 days ago (1m, soft) while being the even-money favourite.
  • Supplied Comments: The hood worn on both previous starts is now left off. He has leading claims for a top yard.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He holds the highest rating in the field. He has placed on both career starts. He is expected to benefit from being back on better ground (Good today).
    • Weaknesses: He failed to win as the even-money favourite last time out. The removal of the hood is a change in equipment.
    • Suitability: The 1m distance is proven.

Maltese Cross (FR) (Total Rating: 311)

  • Recent Form: His last recorded run scored 83 (LR). He went close on his recent debut at Ascot (1m, soft).
  • Supplied Comments: His pedigree suggests he will really come into his own over further. He is in excellent hands to progress. He is considered a player.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He showed great promise on his debut. He is expected to progress.
    • Weaknesses: The Spotlight suggests he may need a greater test of stamina than the one he will receive on today’s Good ground.
    • Suitability: The 1m trip may prove slightly sharp based on his pedigree, which points to him needing further.

Spotlight Verdict: Godolphin’s DEL MARO has run well to be placed on his first two starts and could have more to offer now back on better ground. Maltese Cross went close on his debut over 1m on soft going at Ascot and should have a very bright future, but may needed a greater test of stamina than the one he’ll get on today’s ground. Therefore the main threat to the selection could come from the attractively bred newcomer Ranga Tang.

2.25 Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Nursery (GBBPlus Race)

Class 4, 1m, Good, 2yo, Win: £5,154

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1Monoceros (2)331
2Gold Dawn (2)312

Monoceros (Total Rating: 331)

  • Recent Form: His last two recorded runs scored 76 (LR) and 40 (2LR). He won on debut (7f, good to firm) last month on the other Newmarket course. He subsequently kept on for third under a penalty when odds-on for a Leicester novice (7f, good).
  • Supplied Comments: The step up in trip (to 1m) looks a firm plus on his nursery debut, as his dam was second in the Oaks. His trainer, Charlie Appleby, has won the last two runnings of this race.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: Top Rated. His pedigree suggests he will relish the step up to 1m. He comes from a stable with an excellent record in this event.
    • Weaknesses: He was defeated when odds-on favourite last time.
    • Suitability: The step up to 1m is considered highly suitable.

Gold Dawn (Total Rating: 312)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 90 (LR), 43 (2LR), and 19 (3LR). Although 0-5 overall, he has put in positive performances in his two nurseries (7f, good to firm/good to soft), recently keeping on for second at Doncaster.
  • Supplied Comments: The 1m trip is worth a go. He might not be far away.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He showed consistent, positive performance in his recent nurseries. He is attempting 1m, which connections suggest is “worth a go”.
    • Weaknesses: He is a maiden (0-5).
    • Suitability: He steps up to 1m today.

Spotlight Verdict: Charlie Appleby has won the last two runnings of this race and can make it three in a row with MONOCEROS, who could relish the step up to 1m. Fellow nursery newcomer Dark Shore bumped into subsequent Mill Reef runner-up Into The Sky at Newbury four weeks ago and is second choice ahead of Gold Dawn, who kept on for second in a 7f nursery at Doncaster recently.

3.00 British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap

Class 2, 6f, Good, 3yo+, Win: £30,924

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1Royal Velvet (4)357
2Shallow (4)320

Royal Velvet (Total Rating: 357)

  • Recent Form: Her last three recorded runs scored 121 (LR), 26 (2LR), and 28 (3LR). She has won seven of her 18 starts, with three wins this year, including on this course. She finished with a flourish to beat 17 rivals at York’s Ebor meeting five weeks ago.
  • Supplied Comments: A 5lb rise is considered not excessive. Drying ground (Good) is in her favour. She is noted as a contender.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: She is the Top Rated horse and is proven on the Newmarket course. She is highly consistent, winning recently at York. The current weight rise is viewed as manageable.
    • Weaknesses: Dropping from 7f (York) to 6f asks a new question of her stamina profile.
    • Suitability: The Good ground is favourable. The 6f trip is untested based on recent form.

Shallow (Total Rating: 320)

  • Recent Form: Her last three recorded runs scored 100 (LR), 28 (2LR), and 27 (3LR). She ran a “cracker” behind Royal Velvet at York (7f) five weeks ago, where she tired late after racing prominently. She narrowly fended off Arabian Leopard (6f) on the July course in July.
  • Supplied Comments: She has done most of her racing on AW but is fully effective on fast turf this summer. The return to 6f won’t be an issue. She is one of a number of prominent racers, but is still more appealing than most.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: Highly effective on fast turf (Good ground). The return to 6f is expected to suit her, especially based on her late tiring finish in the 7f York race.
    • Weaknesses: She is one of several prominent racers, which could lead to pace conflict.
    • Suitability: The 6f distance is preferred and should serve her well.

Spotlight Verdict: No shortage of pace on here and that will be of benefit to Arabian Leopard and especially Royal Velvet (second choice) who drops to 6f for the first time. Her York win was an improved effort and she should make a bold bid but it could be that SHALLOW (nap) reverses the placings. While Richard Spencer’s filly likes to race prominently, she doesn’t have to lead and she went through that York race like a filly who would be well served by today’s return to 6f. Lady Roxby is best of the rest.

3.35 Tattersalls Stakes (Registered As The Somerville Tattersall Stakes) (Group 3)

Group 3, 7f, Good, 2yo, Win: £34,026

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1Distant Storm (2)373
2Wechaad (IRE) (2)345

Distant Storm (Total Rating: 373)

  • Recent Form: His last two recorded runs scored 102 (LR) and 45 (2LR). He won on debut (7f, good to firm) in July. He subsequently finished third in the Group 3 Acomb at York (7f, good to firm).
  • Supplied Comments: He is a 1,900,000euros breeze-up buy. His Acomb performance gives him strong claims this afternoon. He can improve further if settling better.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He is the Top Rated horse and has already placed in Group 3 company. He possesses high-class potential.
    • Weaknesses: He pulled hard in the Acomb Stakes at York, which is noted as disconcerting.
    • Suitability: The 7f distance is proven.

Wechaad (IRE) (Total Rating: 345)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 110 (LR), 42 (2LR), and 20 (3LR). He has improved with each of his four runs. He won a convincing nursery at Doncaster (7f, good to soft) recently, preceded by a second place in a Newbury novice.
  • Supplied Comments: He is respected. It is possible the slow ground helped last time, and he is set to be back on a better surface today.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He shows a continually improving profile. He was a commanding winner last time out.
    • Weaknesses: His recent impressive win came on slow ground (good to soft), and he returns to Good ground today.
    • Suitability: The 7f distance is proven.

Spotlight Verdict: The 1,900,000euros Godolphin colt DISTANT STORM did well to finish third in the Acomb at York having pulled hard and he earns the vote ahead of Wechaad, who was a commanding winner of a nursery at Doncaster a fortnight ago. Archer Royal and Northern Champion are both one from one and could have very bright futures.

4.10 Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed)

Listed Race, 2m, Good, 3yo+, Win: £28,355

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1East India Dock (4)373
2Palladium (GER) (4)362

East India Dock (Total Rating: 373)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 90 (LR), 43 (2LR), and 28 (3LR). He won the Chester Cup (2m2f) in May. He posted respectable efforts when sixth in both the Ascot Stakes and Northumberland Plate in June.
  • Supplied Comments: He was one of the top juvenile hurdlers last season. He needs improvement to win at this level. He has been freshened up since June.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He is the Top Rated horse. He is proven over marathon distances (won Chester Cup over 2m2f). He returns following a three-month break.
    • Weaknesses: He needs to improve to secure a Listed win.
    • Suitability: The 2m trip is proven.

Palladium (GER) (Total Rating: 362)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 121 (LR), 33 (2LR), and 29 (3LR). He was successful in his only hurdle race in January. Back on the Flat, he easily regained the winning thread in a 1m6f Salisbury conditions event on heavy ground 13 days ago.
  • Supplied Comments: He is last year’s German Derby winner. His peak RPR came when fourth in the Group 2 Hardwicke on good to firm, so he does not require soft ground. He is considered the one to beat.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He showed excellent recent form after being gelded. Previous form (Hardwicke fourth) demonstrates he is effective on Good to Firm ground.
    • Weaknesses: All his wins have come on softer than Good ground.
    • Suitability: The 2m distance should be suitable, given his German Derby win and Group 2 placing.

Spotlight Verdict: With chief form rival Live Your Dream not seen for two years this has the look of a good opportunity for PALLADIUM to follow up his recent Salisbury conditions race win. That success came on very deep ground but his Hardwicke fourth at Royal Ascot shows he’s far from just a mudlark.

4.45 Budds Horseracing Memorabilia Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

Class 4, 1m4f, Good, 3yo+, Win: £7,731

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1Shrimp Shady (3)288
2Burj Zabeel (IRE) (3)264

Shrimp Shady (Total Rating: 288)

  • Recent Form: His last two recorded runs scored 70 (LR) and 40 (2LR). He won a 1m Windsor novice last September (good to firm). He reappeared after a long absence to finish a 13l third in a 1m4f Kempton novice last month.
  • Supplied Comments: He retains obvious potential for handicaps. His last run suggests better was expected by his leading stable (sent off 6-5 favourite).
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He is the Top Rated horse and is unexposed in handicaps. He is expected to be sharper following his recent reappearance run.
    • Weaknesses: He finished a distant third (13l) in his only recent run.
    • Suitability: The 1m4f distance is suitable.

Burj Zabeel (IRE) (Total Rating: 264)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 68 (LR), 22 (2LR), and 17 (3LR). He won a 1m4f maiden on good ground in June. He has since been beaten upwards of 4l in his three subsequent handicaps.
  • Supplied Comments: Being eased another 2lb can only help. Others are still preferred.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: He is a proven maiden winner over this trip on good ground. He benefits from a 2lb drop in weight.
    • Weaknesses: He has been consistently well-held in recent handicap company.
    • Suitability: The 1m4f distance is proven.

Spotlight Verdict: A consistent profile this year makes Secret Beach the solid option here but there is some untapped potential among the 3yos. SHRIMP SHADY could be sharper with last month’s reappearance behind him and is second choice now moving into his his first handicap. Although My Kinda Ghaiy was a well-held fifth on his handicap debut in May he retains potential back from a break, while Kate O’Riley has switched to the excellent James Owen stable since running too badly to be true in a July Course Listed event.

5.18 Rogues Gallery Racing Syndicate Handicap

Class 5, 1m, Good, 3yo+, Win: £5,154

RankHorse (Age)Master Total Rating (TimeWise)
1=Criminal Shore (IRE) (3)269
1=Just Typical (4)269

Criminal Shore (IRE) (Total Rating: 269)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 74 (LR), 32 (2LR), and 15 (3LR). He ran well in first-time cheekpieces in July. He returned to form in a first-time visor when beaten just a neck at Musselburgh (1m, good to soft) recently.
  • Supplied Comments: He is a player if backing up his latest performance. It remains to be seen if the visor (retained) will maintain its effect.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: Joint Top Rated. He demonstrated peak form recently when narrowly beaten over 1m.
    • Weaknesses: His potential relies on the effectiveness of the retained visor.
    • Suitability: The 1m distance is proven.

Just Typical (Total Rating: 269)

  • Recent Form: His last three recorded runs scored 86 (LR), 31 (2LR), and 11 (3LR). He has won four 1m AW races this year. He won with authority from the rear at Redcar (1m, good) last Tuesday (9 days ago) in his current headgear combination.
  • Supplied Comments: He is unexposed on grass. He is ahead of the handicapper under a 5lb penalty. He is considered a key player.
  • Assessment:
    • Strengths: Joint Top Rated. He is highly progressive and is expected to defy the immediate 5lb penalty due to his recent easy win. He is unexposed on turf.
    • Weaknesses: None explicitly stated, but must overcome the penalty.
    • Suitability: The 1m distance is suitable.

Spotlight Verdict: Having won easily at Redcar last Tuesday, JUST TYPICAL (nap) can defy a 5lb penalty and post his sixth win of the year. The 3yo Hachiman is much better than he showed on his handicap debut at Epsom, where the track may have been an issue, and he could be the chief threat. The 9yo Repertoire goes well fresh and is next on the list following a break, while Gorgeous Mr George and Criminal Shore are others to consider after recent near-misses.
