Sligo Races: Chronological Analysis
2.00 Sligo Fillies Maiden Hurdle (2m 1f 112y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Looks Matter (5/1)
- Mahon Falls (100/30)
Recent Form and Comments
- Looks Matter: Ran once in a point-to-point. On her rules debut, she was beaten a head in a 2m Hexham bumper in June under a positive ride. The third-place finisher in that bumper won subsequently. She is considered a possible contender on her hurdles debut.
- Mahon Falls: Is a half-sister to winners, including Robinnia (a bumper and 2m-2m4f hurdle/chase winner). She had a promising debut second in a 2m Wexford fillies bumper in August (good ground). However, she showed no improvement at Listowel the following month. This is her hurdles debut over a slightly longer trip.
Spotlight Verdict
Unlucky to come to grief on his recent handicap debut, FRENCH SHIP was a very promising novice hurdler last season and can gain compensation here. His stablemate Saint Anapolino made very good progress in the early part of this year and, with very good 5lb claimer Callum Pritchard enlisted, he may provide the main threat. Bowensonfire is very unexposed over this sort of trip and is next on the list, ahead of Sign Again and Montecam.
(Note: The sources mistakenly provided the Cheltenham 1.15 Spotlight Verdict for this Sligo race.)
The correct Sligo Spotlight Verdict is: A good third in adversity on recent hurdles debut, OUR LUCKY LADY could prove the one to beat, although she could face stiff opposition from the likes of Looks Matter, Mahon Falls and Likealightswitch.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: All runners in this race are 4yo.
- Fate of Favourites: Not provided in the sources for this specific track and meeting.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): J Ryan 1-16, J McConnell 1-15, W Mullins 1-6.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Looks Matter: Strengths: Showed strong ability on her rules debut in a bumper. The third from that race won next time. Weaknesses/Suitability: This is her hurdles debut.
- Mahon Falls: Strengths: Good breeding pedigree (half-sister to winners). Had a promising second on her bumper debut. Weaknesses/Suitability: Failed to improve on her second bumper outing. This is her first run over hurdles.
2.35 Solar Generation Hurdle (2m 1f 112y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Colonel Mustard (2-1) (Master RPR: 150)
- Wendrock (3-1) (Master RPR: 130)
Recent Form and Comments
- Colonel Mustard: Has been placed numerous times, including in graded races, though he has only one win over hurdles. He finished fifth in the Coral Cup and fourth in a Fairyhouse Grade 2. He was the runner-up in this race last year after a similar absence, and is the top-rated horse in the field.
- Wendrock: Won a juvenile hurdle at Leopardstown last year. Followed up with several solid efforts in defeat in graded company, including a third-place finish in a Fairyhouse Grade 2 when last seen. He is rated 133 and should run well if he is ready after his break.
Spotlight Verdict
Though not at her best when last seen over hurdles or on the Flat twice since, Cheltenham Mares’ Novice Hurdle runner-up SIXANDAHALF still makes most appeal. Last year’s runner-up in this race Colonel Mustard can go well fresh and poses the biggest danger.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 4yo 1-0-2; 5yo 1-2-10; 6yo 3-2-7; 7yo 0-0-2; 8yo 0-0-2; 9yo 0-0-4.
- Fate of Favourites: 21321.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): Gordon Elliott 2-1-6.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Colonel Mustard: Strengths: Top-rated horse (Master RPR 150). Proven ability to compete in Graded company and demonstrated suitability for this race by finishing runner-up last year. Expected to go well fresh. Weaknesses/Suitability: Has only secured one win over hurdles.
- Wendrock: Strengths: Proven winner at a decent level (Leopardstown juvenile hurdle). Achieved placings in Grade 2 company. Should go well in this company. Weaknesses/Suitability: Needs to prove fitness after a break. Master RPR (130) is significantly lower than Colonel Mustard’s (150).
3.10 Callan Tansey Mares Handicap Hurdle (2m 1f 112y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Romella (5-1) (Master RPR: 103)
- Shannon Bank (13-2) (Master RPR: 100)
Recent Form and Comments
- Romella: Is a five-time hurdles winner over 2m on decent ground. She won most recently at Tipperary after reverting from chasing, having been left in front two out but looking the likely winner anyway. Despite a 7lb rise, she remains off a mark below her career-high and warrants respect.
- Shannon Bank: Is a maiden. She ran strongly from well back to chase home a clear winner over this distance at Killarney earlier this month (yielding), achieving a career-high mark. She runs with first-time cheekpieces applied today.
Spotlight Verdict
Plenty with chances but the 4yo JAADIL could be still a step ahead of the handicapper despite a 10lb rise for a thumping recent Cork win, form franked since by the third home. Last year’s winner Bowgate Street, along with Romella and Shannon Bank look the most likely dangers.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 4yo 1-1-7; 5yo 2-4-14; 6yo 1-2-14; 7yo 1-2-17; 8yo 0-1-7.
- Fate of Favourites: U2313.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): M Flannery 1-0-1; Mark Michael McNiff 1-0-3; Eoin Christopher McCarthy 0-1-1.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Romella: Strengths: Highly experienced winner (five hurdles wins). Recent victory was convincing. Still well-treated compared to her career-high mark. Weaknesses/Suitability: Trainer B M Walsh has a low strike rate (0-2 W-R).
- Shannon Bank: Strengths: Recent form at Killarney showed significant improvement and achieved a career-high mark, suggesting current ability is strong. Cheekpieces are fitted. Weaknesses/Suitability: Remains a maiden.
3.45 John Thomas McNamara Series (Q.R.) Maiden Hurdle (2m 4f 11y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Are You Around (15-8) (Master RPR: 116 in GS-Hvy distance range)
- Luck Between Us (5-2) (Master RPR: 106)
Recent Form and Comments
- Are You Around: Half-sister to 2m7f chase winner Great Name That. Ran a respectable debut third in a Wexford mares bumper (good-to-yielding). However, she was disappointing at Listowel, having taken a wide route. Switches to hurdles and remains a horse of interest.
- Luck Between Us: Her first two maiden hurdle runs were encouraging, including a clear second over C&D in August (good ground). She was slightly underwhelming in a Kilbeggan bumper when clipping heels. She is back hurdling in an ordinary maiden and demands respect.
Spotlight Verdict
A weak enough mares’ maiden in which ARE YOU AROUND may be good enough at the first time of asking over timber to hold off the more experienced Look Between Us, Insouciant Dallier and Elsa Bay. Diaduit Buachaill looks the most interesting of the newcomers.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 4yo 0-2-15; 5yo 2-3-14; 6yo 1-2-13; 7yo 1-0-2.
- Fate of Favourites: 114U.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): W P Mullins 1-1-2; James Andrew Fahey 0-1-2.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Are You Around: Strengths: Strong breeding pedigree. Trainer W Mullins had a winner and a place from two runners in this age group historically. She is a 4yo receiving weight from older rivals. Weaknesses/Suitability: She is making her hurdles debut. Her last bumper run was disappointing.
- Luck Between Us: Strengths: Has proven form over hurdles, having secured a clear second over this specific course and distance recently. She is respected back hurdling. Weaknesses/Suitability: Her latest run in a bumper was underwhelming due to clipping heels.
4.20 Sligo Races Vintage Friday Handicap Hurdle (2m 4f 11y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Tropical Image (7-4) (Master RPR: 102)
- Moulane West (5-1) (Master RPR: 105)
Recent Form and Comments
- Tropical Image: Showed improved form recently when securing a comfortable victory in a Listowel handicap over 2m6f. The 2m4f trip is expected to be suitable. A subsequent 9lb rise is considered manageable, meaning she must be respected.
- Moulane West: Climbed the handicap ranks after winning impressively by 10l over 2m2f at Sligo in May. She has delivered some decent efforts since that win, although her latest run at Galway was below par. She needs to be at her best today.
Spotlight Verdict
Though she has been raised 9lb for her comfortable Listowel win, TROPICAL IMAGE (nap) should be able to cope and score again. Perzzini ran well enough on return after a long absence at Gowran last time and can be involved with improvement likely. Kinbara Hills is down 2lb from last time and shouldn’t be far away.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 4yo 0-0-5; 5yo 1-5-16; 6yo 2-3-20; 7yo 1-1-15; 8yo 2-2-9; 9yo 0-1-4; 10yo 0-0-2; 11yo 0-1-3; 12yo 0-0-1.
- Fate of Favourites: 323020.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): Mark Michael McNiff 0-1-6.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Tropical Image: Strengths: In great form following a comfortable win off a lower mark. The 9lb rise is deemed manageable. The distance is suitable. Weaknesses/Suitability: Trainer E McCarthy has a 0-28 W-R record.
- Moulane West: Strengths: Proven course winner (10l win in May). Higher Master RPR (105) compared to Tropical Image (102). Weaknesses/Suitability: Below form on latest outing at Galway. Needs a return to her best.
4.55 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Hurdle (3m 1f 80y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Additional Time (5-4) (Master RPR: 118)
- Phoenix Arizona (5-1) (Substitute for Non-Runner Poetic Glory) (Master RPR: 95)
Recent Form and Comments
- Additional Time: A point winner in 2024. He ran poorly in a Listowel bumper but improved subsequently over hurdles. Most recently, he was first past the post over 2m6f at Thurles but was demoted for interference (carrying a rival left on the run-in). He wears retained cheekpieces.
- Phoenix Arizona: Showed some ability in point-to-points but failed to win. He has been soundly beaten in two bumpers and a 2m Galway maiden hurdle most recently. He needs to improve considerably as he is raised significantly in trip.
Spotlight Verdict
Having been demoted at Thurles last time for carrying a rival left on the run-in, ADDITIONAL TIME can make up for that even though his tendency to go left under pressure remains a concern. Phoenix Arizona may prove to be best of the rest.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 4yo 0-0-5; 5yo 1-7-20; 6yo 2-1-12; 7yo 1-0-2.
- Fate of Favourites: 44115.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): J McConnell 1-15.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Additional Time: Strengths: Point winner. Demonstrated ability to win over hurdles at a comparable level (prior to demotion). Highest rated (Master RPR 118). Weaknesses/Suitability: Tendency to hang left and interfere is a critical concern, especially in the finish.
- Phoenix Arizona: Strengths: None cited other than being stepped up significantly in trip. Weaknesses/Suitability: Has been soundly beaten in recent races. His Master RPR (95) is far below the favourite.
5.30 Sligo Races Halloween Handicap Hurdle (3m 1f 80y)
TimeWise Master Top Two Rated (Based on Total TimeWise Rating)
- Cornmarket (13-2) (Master RPR: 109)
- Slim Marvel (4-1) (Master RPR: 116)
Recent Form and Comments
- Cornmarket: Despite being speedily-bred, he won consecutive 2m4f handicap hurdles at Sligo earlier this summer. He ran well on his chasing debut recently at Sligo. However, his ability to handle this significantly longer trip is questioned.
- Slim Marvel: Won a Kilbeggan maiden hurdle over 2m4f last year. He is a consistent performer who has run well in defeat often, including at this course, and stays this trip. He is considered a player if he can rebound from a recent fall.
Spotlight Verdict
Noted running on over 2m7f at Killarney last time, GATHER YOURSELF should be suited by this longer trip and get off the mark. Slim Marvel and The Little Yank can give him most to do.
Race Statistics
- Age Groups: 5yo 0-2-7; 6yo 1-3-9; 7yo 0-0-6; 8yo 1-0-4; 9yo 0-1-5; 10yo 0-1-2; 11yo 0-0-4; 12yo 1-0-1; 13yo 0-0-1.
- Fate of Favourites: 6P4.
- Trainer Records (W-pl-r): John Patrick Ryan 0-1-4; Liam P Cusack 0-1-1.
Assessment of Top Two Chances
- Cornmarket: Strengths: Proven winner at the course (two consecutive wins). Showed strong form in his recent chasing debut. Weaknesses/Suitability: The distance is a significant question mark for this speedily-bred horse.
- Slim Marvel: Strengths: Highest Master RPR (116) in the field. Proven to stay the trip and has performed well at Sligo previously. Weaknesses/Suitability: Needs to overcome the issue of falling in his last race.
