National Hunt Racing Preview: 10th December 2025

1.0 Leicester Race Meeting

Racing at Leicester today presents a classic split-card conundrum, with the going forecast to be a mixture of testing heavy ground for the hurdle races and a quicker good surface for the chases. This variance across the right-handed, undulating track will be critical, demanding bettors to pivot their thinking from pure stamina on the hurdles course to tactical speed over the fences. Punters who can successfully adapt their form study to these contrasting conditions will be the ones celebrating at the close of play. Our analysis kicks off with a handicap hurdle where the heavy ground will be front and centre.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Aggagio | 245 | | Snapius | 233 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Aggagio, a useful stayer on the Flat, is a proven performer over this course and distance. His return to hurdling in October was a fine effort, finishing fourth in a Class 3 contest at Fontwell that was a cut above today’s grade. A subsequent blip on the Flat at Windsor can be forgiven as he now returns to his proper discipline.

Snapius is a dual winner on both the Flat and over hurdles. He advertised his well-being with an excellent reappearance after an eight-month break, running a game third over this C&D on soft ground last month. That run proved he remains on a workable handicap mark and has stripped fit for this assignment.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 2-0-2, 5yo 0-1-6, 6yo 0-0-1, 7yo 1-0-2, 8yo 0-0-2, 10yo 0-0-1, 12yo 0-1-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 431

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Venetia Williams 1-0-1

Assessment of Chances

This is a tale of two horses with divergent profiles. Snapius boasts recent, relevant course form and has fitness assured. However, Aggagio‘s fourth-place finish in a Class 3 at Fontwell is the single most important piece of form in this race. To compete at that level, a horse requires a gear most in this Class 5 field simply do not possess. The subsequent drop in grade isn’t just a hopeful placement; it’s a statement of intent from the yard, positioning him to exploit a significant class advantage. While Snapius is fit and proven here, Aggagio’s plunge in class is a move that screams intent; he’s poised to outclass this field.

Spotlight Verdict

He was well below form when ridden much more patiently than usual on his latest outing but class-dropper AGGAGIO should be too good for this field if back on song and is taken to record a second C&D success. Snapius and Thankyouandplease both ran well when last in action but Venetia Williams’ unexposed mare Almeirinda is feared most.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Ronnies Reflection | 245 | | Everyonesacritic | 236 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Ronnies Reflection is a genuine course specialist, boasting two wins over this C&D last term on soft and heavy ground. He served notice that he has returned in top form with a pleasing reappearance last month, dead-heating for second at Fontwell. The quicker ground is a variable, but his love for this track makes him a key player.

Everyonesacritic has also tasted success here, winning over 2m4f on heavy ground in February. His seasonal debut last month is easily excused; he made a significant jumping error and was running without his customary cheekpieces. The refitting of that headgear and the booking of Sean Bowen signal that a return to form is expected.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

A fascinating clash between two proven course winners. Ronnies Reflection has the superior C&D record and arrives off the back of a highly encouraging seasonal bow. Conversely, Everyonesacritic needs to bounce back from a poor return, but the combination of refitted headgear and a top-tier jockey booking is a powerful statement from connections. Given his confirmed well-being and specialist status at this venue, Ronnies Reflection has the more persuasive profile, assuming the good ground doesn’t anchor him.

Spotlight Verdict

Dual C&D winner Ronnies Reflection returns here after a good effort on his seasonal debut, while Sean Bowen’s mount Everyonesacritic (second choice) can leave his low-key reappearance run behind now that his regular cheekpieces are refitted. However, preference is for unexposed 5yo STEAL THE MOVES, who has plenty of scope to progress from last month’s very encouraging chase/handicap debut.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Caballero Cliff | 272 | | Lady Dapple Rose | 263 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Caballero Cliff brings a touch of class to proceedings, having run a superb fourth in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He showed plenty of aptitude for hurdling on his debut at Newbury last month before his early exertions told late on. With that experience under his belt, he should see his race out more strongly today.

Lady Dapple Rose has demonstrated ability in all her starts. Following two promising bumper runs, she made an excellent transition to hurdles when finishing second over this C&D on soft ground last month. She brings valuable, and recent, track experience to the contest.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 2-3-16, 5yo 2-2-16, 6yo 0-1-7, 7yo 0-1-2, 8yo 0-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 1F11

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Venetia Williams 0-1-1

Assessment of Chances

This pits the raw, high-level potential of Caballero Cliff against the proven track-and-trip form of Lady Dapple Rose. The latter’s course experience is a tangible asset on this testing ground. However, Caballero Cliff‘s performance in the Champion Bumper is form from a different stratosphere compared to this maiden hurdle. That level of engine, combined with the benefit of a sighter over obstacles, suggests he has the armoury to prove a cut above this field.

Spotlight Verdict

Onefournine changed hands for a six-figure sum after last year’s winning Irish point debut and could be anything but Champion Bumper fourth CABALLERO CLIFF ran well for a long way in a pretty good Newbury maiden hurdle last month and is given the verdict in the hope that outing bought him on. The Cistercian is next on the list.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Settle Down Jill | 292 | | Belle Montrose | 217 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Settle Down Jill is a progressive chaser who ran a cracker in a higher-grade contest last time, finishing third in a 0-120 handicap at Warwick. She showed tenacity to recover from an early jumping error that day and is likely to adopt her usual front-running tactics here. Dropping back in distance, she could prove a tough nut to crack.

Belle Montrose is already a dual chase winner this season, scoring at Uttoxeter and Fakenham. Despite one poor run, her recent third-place finish on soft ground was a return to form. She should relish the quicker surface forecast today and looms as a credible danger.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

In this four-runner affair, Settle Down Jill‘s claims are undeniable. The 0-120 handicap she contested last time out was a significantly deeper race than this, and she emerges from it looking well-handicapped. Her aggressive, front-running style is a major asset around a track like Leicester, and she sets a daunting standard. While Belle Montrose is a tough competitor who will appreciate the ground, this looks like Settle Down Jill‘s race to lose given the significant class relief.

Spotlight Verdict

Cases can be made for all four runners but this still looks significantly less competitive than the 0-120 contest in which SETTLE DOWN JILL was a creditable third three weeks ago. Dan Skelton’s mare can cope with today’s drop back in trip and is selected to dominate from the front. Irish Chorus was running well before a chance-ending slither on her chasing debut and is second choice.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Kicour La | 368 | | Hot To Go | 301 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Kicour La translated the promise of his Irish point-to-point run into a stylish victory on his rules debut. He scored over this C&D on soft ground by a commanding five lengths last month, showing a determined attitude. He carries a penalty but sets a very clear standard for his rivals.

Hot To Go, an Irish point runner-up, overcame a disappointing rules debut to score here last month over a shorter trip on soft ground. The form of that small-field race is open to question, but this step up in distance is a definite positive and he has scope for further improvement.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 0-0-6, 5yo 1-3-11, 6yo 2-0-4, 7yo 0-0-1, 8yo 0-1-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 113

Assessment of Chances

Kicour La‘s course and distance victory was visually impressive and sets a benchmark that will prove tough for any of these to meet. He won with authority and looks every inch a promising novice. While Hot To Go was also a winner here, his victory came in a much weaker contest. The step up in trip should help him, but he needs to find a chunk of improvement to trouble the favourite. Kicour La‘s proven ability under these specific conditions makes him the one they all have to beat.

Spotlight Verdict

Ben Pauling’s KICOUR LA created a fairly good impression when keeping on strongly to win by 5l over C&D on last month’s rules debut and looks the one to beat. Arcadian Star and Our Bobby Dazzler (second choice) were split only by a nose when third and fourth in that race but the latter was making his seasonal debut and arguably shaped with much greater promise. Today’s step up in trip may enable Hot To Go to better the form he showed when winning a small-field 1m7f contest here at the same meeting.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Jet Plane | 304 | | William Cody | 273 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Jet Plane put in a brave effort when seventh of 17 over the formidable Aintree fences last month. That was a red-hot handicap, and he now drops into calmer waters off a 2lb lower mark. This represents a far more manageable assignment, and he must be considered a key protagonist.

William Cody is a four-time chase winner, including over this C&D. He looked to have sharpened up for his reappearance when running a close second at Catterick 17 days ago. He remains on an attractive handicap mark and, with proven form at the track, should be right in the thick of things.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This is a competitive heat where both top-rated horses have strong claims. William Cody‘s recent form and proven affinity for the track make him a rock-solid proposition. However, Jet Plane‘s effort at Aintree, while not a winning one, was a performance full of merit in a much tougher race. The drop into this Class 3 contest could be the decisive factor that allows him to get his head back in front. The class relief afforded to Jet Plane makes him the selection in a tight call.

Spotlight Verdict

Moonshine Man (second choice) can probably be excused last month’s soft-ground defeat and could still have significant potential over fences but THE GOOD DOCTOR (nap) got his career back on track on his seasonal debut and remains well handicapped on last December’s form. Recent Catterick runner-up William Cody is still on a good mark and also features prominently in calculations.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Richardson | 251 | | Jewel Eyed Judy | 245 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Richardson was in imperious form when last seen in February, rattling off back-to-back wins at Chepstow and Bangor on soft and heavy ground respectively. He returns from a nine-month absence, but his proven effectiveness in deep ground makes him a formidable opponent if fully tuned up.

Jewel Eyed Judy returned to form in emphatic style last month, justifying strong market support to win with ease over this C&D on soft ground. That was just her seventh start over hurdles, implying she may not have reached the ceiling of her ability just yet.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This presents the classic puzzle of proven class versus recent form. Richardson boasts the superior historical form, but a 287-day layoff is a significant question mark, especially on testing ground. In contrast, Jewel Eyed Judy has race-fitness guaranteed, a recent C&D win under her belt, and the potential for more to come. In these conditions, fitness is paramount, and that gives Jewel Eyed Judy the decisive edge to follow up on her recent success.

Spotlight Verdict

The most obvious answer is JEWEL EYED JUDY, who came good with a clearcut C&D win on her recent seasonal debut and has scope for further progress. Klic Boum may fare best of the others.

2.0 Hereford Race Meeting

The action at Hereford takes place on a sharp, right-handed track that is relatively flat in nature. With good ground forecast, conditions should be perfect for horses with a blend of speed and agility. Races here are often run at a true gallop, making a decisive turn of foot in the home straight a potent weapon. We begin our preview with the first division of a maiden hurdle.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Soomaroy | 303 | | Rock Sensation | 296 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Soomaroy was an impressive winner of an Irish maiden point-to-point, prompting connections to part with £190,000. He was turned over at odds-on when second on his rules debut at Ascot, but the Henderson yard is renowned for bringing their horses on significantly for their first run of the season.

Rock Sensation improved to win a bumper at Southwell last spring and put up a fine performance on his return when fourth in a competitive Listed bumper at Cheltenham last month. That is strong form, and though he may want further in time, he has the class to make an impact on his hurdling bow.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This features two hurdling newcomers with exciting profiles. Rock Sensation brings the stronger bumper form, having held his own in Listed company. However, Soomaroy‘s point-to-point background and hefty price tag are clear indicators of the high regard in which he is held. His debut was a touch underwhelming, but the potential for marked improvement is a hallmark of his stable. That latent potential is what swings the verdict his way; he is taken to show his true colours today.

Spotlight Verdict

Pioneer Pete (second choice) is knocking on the door but SOOMAROY may well turn out to be above average and he gets the vote to make amends for Ascot. The hurdle newcomers are headed by Rock Sensation and Onlyforfrankie.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Gnomon | 284 | | Vol Royale | 228 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Gnomon was a bumper winner and a progressive performer on the Flat for a top yard, winning a handicap with a Racing Post Rating of 93 on his final start. Subsequently sold for 75,000gns, he now makes a fascinating hurdles debut for new connections, bringing a high level of Flat class to the table.

Vol Royale is a point-to-point winner who showed fair ability in bumpers. His most recent effort over hurdles at a longer trip suggested that this drop back to two miles will be a shrewd move. He possesses the solid National Hunt foundation that should see him run a good race.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This is a true clash of profiles. Vol Royale has the more conventional National Hunt background and brings valuable experience. However, the profile of Gnomon is far more intriguing. He possesses a level of Flat ability that is rare in a race like this, and on good ground where speed is a significant asset, that class could prove decisive. His progressive nature on the level makes him a hugely exciting recruit to the jumping game.

Spotlight Verdict

Interesting hurdles debutant GNOMON gets the vote ahead of Get In Order, who may be capable of improvement. Green Sky brings the best form but sets an unimpressive standard and is rather exposed. Vol Royale is also in the mix.

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Can You Hear Me showed a big engine on his second hurdles start at Lingfield last month. Despite a series of jumping mistakes, he stayed on tenaciously to finish second over a similar trip. He is clearly open to significant improvement, especially if his jumping becomes more polished.

Loaded And Locked was a ready bumper winner at Worcester on his rules debut. He then stepped into a tidy maiden hurdle at Warwick for his first go over obstacles, finishing a respectable fourth. The experience gained there, coupled with a step up in trip that should suit, makes him a formidable opponent.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

While Can You Hear Me has potential, Loaded And Locked‘s profile is far more robust. He emerges from a stronger bumper and a more informative hurdles debut at Warwick. He appears to have a solid platform to build from and the step up in distance is a logical progression. With Harry Cobden taking the ride, he looks primed to deliver a professional, winning performance.

Spotlight Verdict

The Warwick event contested by Loaded And Locked on his hurdles debut might be worth following and represents the best hurdles form in this race, but there’s a suspicion that LAGUNA BEACH is better than he was able to show on his first go in this sphere and he’s taken to find the improvement he requires. Can You Hear Me should also have more to offer, while a much improved effort from Catchintsavo would be no surprise.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Golan Loop | 293 | | Striking A Pose | 281 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Golan Loop, a winner in points and over hurdles, made an excellent debut over fences at Southwell last time out, finishing a clear second in a 3m handicap. That run strongly suggested he is on a competitive mark, and representing an in-form stable, he is a leading candidate to go one better.

Striking A Pose is a six-time winner, though five of those victories came over hurdles. His chasing record of 1-17 is a concern, and he has avoided fences for the past year. However, he is now on a very low handicap mark and possesses the raw ability to be a threat if he can put it all together.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This race looks to be at the mercy of Golan Loop. His chasing debut was brimming with promise, and as a lightly-raced five-year-old, he has considerable scope for improvement. The excellent form of his stable is another major tick in his column. In contrast, Striking A Pose has a poor record over fences and is an inconsistent performer, making him a risky proposition despite his lenient mark. Golan Loop‘s profile is far more persuasive, and he should be winning this.

Spotlight Verdict

Warren Greatrex has his string in good form and GOLAN LOOP (nap) only narrowly failed on his chase/handicap debut at Southwell. He can go one better, with recent C&D runner-up Mahler Moon edging second preference ahead of Masters Legacy.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Ri Na Cuirte | 315 | | Tzarmix | 274 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Ri Na Cuirte got his head back in front with a determined victory at Exeter last month over 2m7f. He is 4lb higher in the weights for that success, but the booking of conditional jockey Toby McCain-Mitchell, who claims a valuable 5lb, effectively means he runs off a lower mark. He is a huge player.

Tzarmix arrives in the form of his life, having bolted up in a conditional jockeys’ race at Ludlow just seven days ago. He won with plenty in hand over a 3m trip and, crucially, escapes a penalty for that victory. This makes him exceptionally well-in at the weights and a massive threat.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This revolves around two in-form, recent winners. Ri Na Cuirte has an excellent chance, effectively running off a favourable mark thanks to his jockey’s claim. However, the claims of Tzarmix are impossible to ignore. To win just seven days ago and escape a penalty is a huge advantage that alert punters will have spotted immediately. He is ‘in ahead of the handicapper’, and provided this race doesn’t come too soon, he should be incredibly difficult to beat.

Spotlight Verdict

The main three to concentrate on are TZARMIX, Ri Na Cuirte (second choice) and Despereaux. It’s hard to get away from the former, however, who goes unpenalised for winning by just over 6l at Ludlow one week ago. Braganza Bay is on his last winning mark and would have a say if it is one of his going days.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Danny’s Friend | 236 | | Sweet Nightingale | 223 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Danny’s Friend had been tumbling down the weights and took full advantage to open his chasing account at this track a fortnight ago. He won readily over 2m, and his pedigree suggests this step up in trip is well within his range. Despite an 8lb rise, that was only his second start over fences, and further improvement is likely.

Sweet Nightingale has been a picture of consistency of late, finishing third on her last three outings over 2m4f on good ground. The handicapper is slowly giving her a chance, and while she wouldn’t want the ground to soften, she is almost certain to give her running once again.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 5yo 1-1-4, 6yo 1-0-5, 7yo 0-3-5, 8yo 0-0-9, 9yo 0-0-2, 10yo 0-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 13

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Henry Oliver 0-1-1

Assessment of Chances

While Sweet Nightingale is a reliable conveyance for place money, her profile suggests she often finds one or two too strong for the win. In contrast, Danny’s Friend is a last-time-out winner with an unexposed profile over fences. The 8lb hike from the handicapper presents a challenge, but the manner of his Hereford win was convincing, and this longer trip could unlock another level of ability. He is the more likely winner of the two.

Spotlight Verdict

Danny’s Friend (second choice) is an obvious starting point but MOVE WITH THE BEAT shaped quite nicely on his recent stable debut and is taken to build on that. The remainder have various questions to answer but maybe Kingcormac can prove the best of them.

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Masonbrook Meadow was a game winner at Exeter in October over about 2m on good to firm ground. She backed that up with a perfectly respectable fourth-place finish at Wincanton over 2m4f three weeks ago. Any significant rain would be a worry, but on her preferred quick surface, she is a leading candidate.

Jokers ‘N’ Clowns is a long-standing maiden with a 0-14 record over hurdles and is now with her fourth trainer. She was pulled up on her debut for this yard at Exeter last month and her falling handicap mark is not enough to entice, as she has a mountain to climb based on recent evidence.

Race Statistics

• N/A

Assessment of Chances

This is a complete mismatch on paper. Masonbrook Meadow is an in-form, recent winner who has demonstrated a good level of ability in this sphere. In stark contrast, Jokers ‘N’ Clowns has a long losing sequence and showed absolutely nothing on her first run for her new stable. Provided the ground remains suitable, Masonbrook Meadow should have little trouble dispatching this rival and is a very strong fancy against the field.

Spotlight Verdict

Only a handful of these can be seriously considered and KUPKA VALLIS, for a yard that recently opened it’s seasonal account, can make her own breakthrough this time. Jamaicaine (second choice) and Masonbrook Meadow should also have a say, while it would be no surprise if Seventeenothree rewarded each-way support at likely bigger odds.

3.0 Hexham Race Meeting

Hexham is one of the country’s most unique and demanding National Hunt tracks, featuring a stiff, undulating course with a gruelling uphill finish that has found many a horse out. Today’s forecast of heavy ground will amplify these challenges, placing an uncompromising emphasis on stamina, jumping proficiency, and a tenacious attitude. Only the toughest and most resolute will prevail. The card opens with a novices’ hurdle for mares.

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Azahara Palace, a five-time winner on the Flat, made a highly promising start to her hurdling career a fortnight ago. On her stable debut, she finished an excellent second at Wetherby in a 2m contest on soft ground. That performance immediately marks her out as a filly to follow in this sphere.

Gintime showed clear ability when runner-up in a Carlisle bumper on soft ground last year. Her hurdles debut over this C&D five weeks ago was a solid fourth-place effort, and she is entitled to improve for that initial experience. She looks more than capable of winning races over timber.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 1-1-16, 5yo 2-6-18, 6yo 2-1-11, 7yo 1-2-5, 8yo 1-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 1113211

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Nicky Richards 1-0-1

Assessment of Chances

Both mares have promise, but Azahara Palace sets a clear and obvious standard based on her hurdles debut. Her strong Flat background, combined with a seamless transition to jumping, gives her a significant edge. While Gintime is open to improvement and will handle the testing conditions, she needs to find a considerable amount to trouble Azahara Palace, whose Wetherby form is the strongest on offer.

Spotlight Verdict

Shropshire-based Henry Daly is 3-7 (43%) all-time at Hexham, so it’s notable that TRINITY STREET, runner-up in a recent Carlisle bumper, makes the journey north for hurdles debut. This looks an ideal opportunity for the Mahler filly, a £115,000 purchase out of the point-to-point scene, to resume winning ways. Adrian Keatley’s Azahara Palace is the clear next best.

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Union Avenue was a useful bumper horse, winning twice before a creditable ninth in the 2024 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. He makes his hurdles debut after a lengthy 637-day absence, but if he retains anything close to his old ability, he is a major force in this company.

Tashkhan is a high-class stayer on the Flat, boasting a wealth of Group-level form and a peak RPR of 118. While perhaps not the force of old in that sphere, his underlying class is a rare commodity in a Hexham maiden hurdle and commands the utmost respect on his jumping debut.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 1-1-6, 5yo 2-3-25, 6yo 3-3-13, 7yo 1-0-5, 8yo 0-3-3

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 1P23211

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): James Moffatt 1-0-3, N W Alexander 0-1-2

Assessment of Chances

This features two fascinating hurdles debutants. Tashkhan‘s Flat class is exceptional for a race of this type, but Union Avenue‘s bumper form is more directly relevant and very strong in its own right. The entire race hinges on whether Union Avenue can defy a 21-month layoff. If he returns anywhere near his best, his form is superior. It’s a significant risk, but the proven jumping-race ability of Union Avenue gives him the narrowest of edges.

Spotlight Verdict

The most talented contenders are the hurdles debutants UNION AVENUE and Tashkhan. The former has been absent for 21 months but proved useful in bumpers, while the latter has perhaps lost some of his class but warrants respect on his best Flat form. Kool Raoul and Whiskey On Ice look best of the runners who already have experience in this sphere, while Knockeranna Rose is open to further progress.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Gege Ville | 270 | | King Gris | 247 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Gege Ville is a lightly-raced nine-year-old with an excellent record when fresh. He won on his handicap debut at Haydock on heavy ground and backed that up with a fine second at Ayr. He returns from another break off just a 3lb higher mark and must be taken very seriously.

King Gris showed no ability for his previous trainer but was utterly transformed on his stable and handicap debut for Gordon Elliott nine days ago. Sent off a hot favourite at Ayr, he won with his head in his chest on heavy ground despite being 5lb out of the weights. He is 11lb higher today but looks to have a huge amount in hand.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 4yo 1-1-2, 5yo 2-0-8, 6yo 1-2-17, 7yo 0-3-10, 8yo 0-3-6, 9yo 0-2-5, 10yo 2-0-7, 11yo 0-0-3, 12yo 0-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 5P1231

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Micky Hammond 0-2-7

Assessment of Chances

Gege Ville has a strong profile and his ability to fire after a layoff is a major asset. However, the potential of King Gris is almost frightening. The dramatic improvement for a top Irish yard suggests he is a completely different animal now that he is in handicaps. An 11lb rise would stop most horses, but the sheer authority of his Ayr victory suggests he is still miles ahead of the handicapper and is the one they all have to fear.

Spotlight Verdict

He’s 11lb higher than when winning nine days ago at Ayr but the chances are that KING GRIS is still ahead of the game on just his second run for Gordon Elliott. Getaway Master is the standout danger having escaped a penalty for his comfortable win at Carlisle, though Gege Ville is by no means ruled out.

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Wee Alki finally got his head in front over this C&D five weeks ago on good to soft ground. That form has been boosted since, with both the third and fifth horses running well in subsequent starts. A 5lb rise demands more, but he arrives in form and with confidence high.

Moveonbuy broke her duck at the eighth attempt when winning at Cartmel in June over 2m6f on soft ground. The step up in trip today should be well within her compass. However, she returns from a six-month break off a 4lb higher mark, so her fitness must be taken on trust.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 5yo 0-1-10, 6yo 1-2-7, 7yo 1-2-9, 8yo 1-0-6, 9yo 0-1-2, 10yo 0-0-1, 11yo 0-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: P31

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Susan Corbett 1-0-2, Micky Hammond 0-1-3

Assessment of Chances

Wee Alki holds all the aces. He is a proven C&D winner whose recent form has been franked, and he has race fitness on his side. While Moveonbuy is respected as a last-time-out winner, the combination of a six-month absence and a rise in the weights makes her a far riskier proposition in these testing conditions. Wee Alki is the solid, reliable option to handle the ground and defy the penalty.

Spotlight Verdict

It’s possible that the Cartmel scorer Moveonbuy will be fit enough to do herself justice off a six-month break. However, it’s probably safer to focus near the top of the weights for the solution. Guernesey (second choice) can prove competitive but the recent C&D scorer WEE ALKI should have what it takes to negotiate a 5lb rise.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Heeztheboy | 273 | | Truckers Cruising | 244 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Heeztheboy has been a revelation since joining his current yard, winning by wide margins on two of his last three starts. He bolted up by 15 lengths here over 2m4f and followed that with a 13-length romp at Wetherby over 3m. Something has clearly clicked, and despite an 8lb rise, he is a massive danger.

Truckers Cruising, another raider from the Gordon Elliott yard, justified favouritism with an effortless 6-length win at Ayr nine days ago over 2m on heavy ground. That was only his second chase start. He carries a penalty, but his jockey’s 5lb claim negates much of that, and as a 3m point winner, this longer trip will be no issue.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 5yo 0-0-1, 6yo 3-2-11, 7yo 3-2-15, 8yo 0-3-11, 9yo 0-1-6, 10yo 0-0-6, 11yo 0-1-2, 12yo 0-0-1, 13yo 0-0-1

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: 052414

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Micky Hammond 0-1-6

Assessment of Chances

This is a cracking contest between two horses at the absolute peak of their powers. Heeztheboy has been utterly dominant and loves these conditions. However, the unexposed profile of Truckers Cruising is formidable. He won with ridiculous ease at Ayr and is effectively only 2lb higher today when factoring in his jockey’s claim. With the step up in trip looking a major plus, he looks poised to continue his rapid progression and can get the better of the revitalised Heeztheboy.

Spotlight Verdict

It was fairly easy for TRUCKERS CRUISING (nap) at Ayr and he’s effectively only 2lb higher with Carl Millar bringing his 5lb claim. Heeztheboy represents a live threat after the positive start he’s made for Gary Hanmer. Halpha Soleil could stage a revival in new headgear.

TimeWise Top-Rated Selections | Horse | Total Rating | | :— | :— | | Dixie Cowboy | 226 | | Blended Stealth | 192 |

Analysis of Top-Rated Contenders

Dixie Cowboy made an immediate breakthrough over fences, winning at the first attempt at Sedgefield over 2m on soft ground just over a fortnight ago. The form of that race has been boosted since, with the third-placed horse going very close on its next start. A 5lb rise looks perfectly manageable.

Blended Stealth finally got off the mark in a handicap hurdle here in May. He ran well on his penultimate start when runner-up over fences at Sedgefield but was an early faller in the race won by Dixie Cowboy last time out. He is not without a chance but clearly comes with risks attached.

Race Statistics

• AGE GROUPS: 5yo 1-0-4, 6yo 2-1-6, 7yo 1-4-15, 8yo 2-1-8, 9yo 1-2-4, 10yo 0-0-10, 11yo 0-1-4, 12yo 0-1-3

• FATE OF FAVOURITES: P15453P

• TRAINERS IN THIS RACE (w-pl-r): Stuart Coltherd 1-1-4, Micky Hammond 0-1-4

Assessment of Chances

Dixie Cowboy brings a progressive and solid profile into this race. His debut chase win was taking, and the subsequent boost to the form makes him look well-treated despite the 5lb penalty. Blended Stealth has ability but is far less reliable, as his recent fall testifies. With proven effectiveness and clear scope for further improvement, Dixie Cowboy is the one to beat.

Spotlight Verdict

A race named in honour of the popular 1960s chaser Tant Pis. The Sedgefield scorer Dixie Cowboy is likely to be a popular choice for punters as he seeks to defy a 5lb rise to make it 2-2 over fences and, with viable opposition thin on the ground, he’s entitled to respect. However, this could be the opportunity for STICK WITH ME SAM to shine. Tom Gretton’s charge has posted some creditable efforts and this is just his second run since wind surgery.
