Racing Analysis: Newcastle, Warwick & Taunton – December 11th, 2025

·

1. 12:15 Newcastle – Bet Boost At bet365 Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

Today’s analysis begins at Newcastle with a Class 5 Handicap Hurdle, a contest designed to test the skill and judgment of the sport’s up-and-coming conditional jockeys. Over an intermediate trip of just over two miles, this race presents a competitive puzzle where rider ability could be as crucial as equine form in determining the outcome.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 190y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Shes Notjoeking – 237

2. Zamond – 231

Shes Notjoeking: 0-8 in handicaps but has edged down the weights and she shaped when third of 14 at Ayr (2m3f, soft) four weeks ago as though she may benefit from this drop back in trip; won a bumper here; high on the list.

Zamond: Won at Sedgefield (2m4f, good) in September and solid fourth there (2m1f, good to soft) next time; well beaten at Doncaster (2m3f, good to soft) recently but he’s run well on slow ground previously and isn’t written off.

Assessment of Chances

The ratings suggest a close contest between two runners with different profiles. Shes Notjoeking, despite being winless in eight handicap starts, holds a strong chance. Her recent third at Ayr hinted that a shorter trip could be the key, and her previous bumper win at this course confirms her liking for the track. In contrast, Zamond is a proven winner but arrives on the back of a poor performance at Doncaster. However, his previous solid form and proven ability on slower ground mean he cannot be easily dismissed if he bounces back.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 7-year-olds have the best recent record in this race, with 2 wins from 4 runners.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a poor record, finishing 4th and 5th in the last two runnings.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Micky Hammond 1-0-2

Spotlight Verdict

This may not take much winning and it could be a good opportunity for SHE’S NOTJOEKING (nap), who shaped when third at Ayr last month as though she would benefit from this drop back in trip. The lightly raced 5yo Joto is of interest judged on her third at Carlisle in March and is feared most on her second start of the season, while this shorter trip could be a plus for Ruler Legend. It will be interesting to see how the 4yo Jet Approach goes in the betting off a basement opening mark. [Ben Hutton]

We now turn our attention to the action at Warwick for a juvenile fillies’ contest.

——————————————————————————–

2. 12:25 Warwick – Heat Your Home With Alpha Fillies’ Juvenile Maiden Hurdle

Next, we head to Warwick for a Class 4 Juvenile Maiden Hurdle exclusively for three-year-old fillies. These races are strategically important as they provide a first look at potential future stars, pitting those with solid Flat racing credentials against others who have been specifically bred for a career over obstacles. Assessing their transition to hurdling is the key challenge for punters.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Made U Blush – 287

2. Rosso Levanto – 169

Made U Blush: Ended ten-race Flat career with win for Jonathan Portman in October (1m2f, good to soft; RPR 82), before changing hands for 90,000gns; with top stable for jumps career; likely contender.

Rosso Levanto: Placed in fast-ground selling handicap on the Flat for Charlie Johnston this summer (1m4f; RPR 58) but her three Flat runs for this stable were very disappointing and she unseated her rider on first two hurdling starts.

Assessment of Chances

The ratings highlight a significant gap in perceived ability, with Made U Blush standing out. A recent winner on the Flat, she was subsequently acquired for a substantial sum and now joins a premier jumps stable, making her a very likely contender on her hurdling debut. In stark contrast, Rosso Levanto has struggled on the Flat for her new yard and has failed to complete on both of her attempts over hurdles, suggesting she faces an uphill battle to feature.

Spotlight Verdict

Dan Skelton’s new recruit Made U Blush ended her Flat career with a win in October but MISS CARBO is proven over hurdles, having run well in defeat twice in France in the spring, and she might provide Sean Bowen with another winner. Sovereign Applause was nothing special on the Flat but her breeding suggests she might fare better over hurdles.[Chris Wilson]

Our focus now shifts south to the meeting at Taunton.

——————————————————————————–

3. 12:35 Taunton – Kings College Taunton EBF Junior National Hunt Hurdle

The first race from Taunton is a Class 4 Junior National Hunt Hurdle, providing an early career test for three-year-olds. Contests like these are crucial for identifying novice hurdlers with potential, as they navigate the obstacles for one of the first times under race conditions. Pedigree and promise are often weighed heavily against the limited form on offer.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 104y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Detroit Bay – 247

2. Apollon Forlonge – 224

Detroit Bay: Posted a modest RPR of 73 when beaten 5l in a bumper at Wincanton (good) but only faded late on and Harry Cobden takes over this afternoon.

Apollon Forlonge: 75,000euros 2yo from the family of high-class Irish jumper Asterion Forlonge; only four ran when beaten just under 6l into third at Exeter (good to soft) where he disputed the lead before getting outpaced; showed enough to merit serious consideration here.

Assessment of Chances

Detroit Bay leads the ratings, bringing some bumper experience where he showed promise before fading late. The booking of top jockey Harry Cobden is a significant positive and suggests connections expect a bold showing. Apollon Forlonge, a well-bred individual, also brings hurdling experience from a decent effort at Exeter. Although outpaced, that run showed enough raw ability to suggest he can be a serious contender in this company.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 3-year-olds have recorded 2 wins from 17 starts in this race.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a solid record, winning once and finishing second once in the last two runnings.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Jane Williams 1-0-3, Nigel Hawke 0-1-1

Spotlight Verdict

It’s interesting that NO BOUNDARIES was a much shorter price than his successful stablemate for an Exeter bumper and the winner has impressed again since. This half-brother to El Fabiolo ran with promise and should have a future. Apollon Forlonge is the obvious threat, though David Pipe’s newcomer Navarau could easily have a part to play.[Alistair Jones]

Next, we return to Newcastle for a maiden hurdle.

——————————————————————————–

4. 12:45 Newcastle – 6 Horses Challenge At bet365 Maiden Hurdle

This Class 4 Maiden Hurdle at Newcastle offers a key opportunity for runners to secure their first victory over obstacles. Such races often feature a mix of promising types who have shown ability in other spheres, like point-to-points or bumpers, alongside others who have placed form over hurdles but are yet to get their head in front. Finding the horse ready to take that next step is the challenge.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 190y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. U S Marshall – 281

2. Hes Bresilian – 243

U S Marshall: Won Irish maiden point (3m, yielding) in February on second start and then sold for £55,000; also showed promise when third on hurdle debut at Uttoxeter (2m, heavy) last month and he’s open to improvement; contender.

He’s Bresilian: Made it 0-7 under rules when below par on handicap debut a fortnight ago, and some of those defeats have come at shortish prices; however, prior to last time he was placed in four novice/maiden hurdles (2m/2m1f, soft/good to soft) and this could be a good opportunity if he’s back on song.

Assessment of Chances

The top two rated horses present a classic maiden hurdle conundrum. U S Marshall is an Irish point-to-point winner who showed clear promise on his rules debut when third at Uttoxeter. He is open to significant improvement and represents a profile that often succeeds in these events. In contrast, Hes Bresilian has more experience over hurdles, with four placed efforts to his name, but failed to fire on his recent handicap debut. He has a clear opportunity here if he can recapture his best form, but his string of defeats at short prices is a concern.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 4-year-olds have the strongest record with 1 win from 5 starts.

Spotlight Verdict

He’s Bresilian and Mr Lincoln have the best form but He’s Bresilian was well beaten on his recent handicap debut and Mr Lincoln has been off since August 2024. Preference is for point winner U S MARSHALL, who was an encouraging third on last month’s hurdle debut at Uttoxeter. Bumper winner Hunters Spring is another who is open to improvement on her second hurdle start and she is second choice.[Ben Hutton]

We now switch back to Warwick for another maiden hurdle, this time over a longer trip.

——————————————————————————–

5. 12:55 Warwick – Aztec Aerosols Contract Filling Maiden Hurdle

The action continues at Warwick with a Class 4 Maiden Hurdle run over a testing two miles and five furlongs. This extended distance is designed to examine the stamina of these hurdling newcomers, often favouring horses with a background in point-to-points or those bred to appreciate a longer trip. It’s a race where staying power will be paramount.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 5f

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Moneygarrow – 362

2. Step Ahead – 312

Moneygarrow: Point/bumper winner; placed in Grade 2 Persian War on hurdle debut at Chepstow (2m3f, good) in October and not discredited when fifth in Cheltenham Grade 2 (2m5f, soft; had wind op soon after) last month; the one to beat.

Step Ahead: Placed in both bumpers for Don Cantillon last year, latterly when third (just behind Moneygarrow) in Ascot Listed race (good to soft) in December; subsequently changed hands for £145,000 and looks a good prospect for novice hurdles this season; tongue-tie added.

Assessment of Chances

This appears to be a high-quality maiden, with the top-rated Moneygarrow setting a formidable standard. His form in two Graded novice hurdles marks him as a class apart from most maiden company, and having already proven his stamina at this trip, he is justifiably the one to beat. Step Ahead, however, is a fascinating opponent. He finished just behind Moneygarrow in a quality bumper last year and was subsequently purchased for a significant sum. He makes his hurdling debut with a lofty reputation and is considered a very bright prospect for the season ahead.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 5-year-olds hold the best record with 5 wins from 63 starts, ahead of 4-year-olds with 2 wins from 29.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a strong recent record, winning 5 of the last 8 runnings, though one was pulled up.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Alan King 2-1-8, Nicky Henderson 2-3-14, Ben Pauling 1-0-5, Dan Skelton 1-2-6, Olly Murphy 0-1-1

Spotlight Verdict

The suggestion in this interesting maiden is MONEYGARROW, who drops in grade after performing well at Grade 2 level on both hurdling starts. However, Crackling Fire made a promising debut in a good race last month and is afforded significant respect, while hurdling debutant Step Ahead looked useful in bumpers last season and there is surely more to come from both Lightfingered Jack and Dropematthestation.[Chris Wilson]

The analysis now moves back to Taunton for a novices’ hurdle.

——————————————————————————–

6. 1:05 Taunton – Jim Woodborne And Colin Dyer Memorial Novices’ Hurdle

This Class 4 Novices’ Hurdle at Taunton presents a fascinating puzzle, featuring a field with a blend of proven hurdling ability and untapped potential. The challenge lies in weighing the solid form of previous winners against the promise of those making their rules debut, often with strong credentials from the point-to-point or bumper spheres.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 104y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Knock Off Soxs – 308

2. Stanners Glen – 272

Knock Off Soxs: Narrow winner of a British point in April, after which he underwent wind surgery; chased home the favourite in a modest time over C&D two weeks ago (good) but that was an encouraging start under rules; RPRs give him every chance in this company.

Stanners Glen: Won a 3m point (yielding) and 2m2f bumper (good to yielding) when trained in Ireland and later recruited by these connections for £78,000; has had wind operation and now tongue tied; has to be of interest.

Assessment of Chances

The ratings favour Knock Off Soxs, who made an encouraging debut under rules when second over this course and distance just two weeks ago. That recent experience is a major advantage, and with progression expected, he holds strong claims. However, Stanners Glen arrives with a significant reputation, having won both a point-to-point and a bumper in Ireland. A £78,000 purchase, he makes his hurdling debut for a top yard after a wind operation and must be considered a serious threat despite his lack of rules experience.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 4-year-olds have a strong record, winning 7 of 70 starts, while 5-year-olds have won 3 of 49.

• Fate of Favourites: A remarkable statistic, with the favourite winning in 9 of the last 10 runnings of this race and finishing second on the other occasion.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Harry Fry 1-1-5, Philip Hobbs & Johnson White 1-0-2, David Pipe 0-1-6, Fergal O’Brien 0-2-2, Jeremy Scott 0-1-4

Spotlight Verdict

Not many of these are likely to count. IS THIS FOR REAL has shown he can win races and the fourth on his hurdling debut came against respected opposition. Knock Off Soxs is feared most after his recent second here, while Run Away Joe and Stanners Glen are the other likely contenders.[Alistair Jones]

Next up is a long-distance novice handicap back at Newcastle.

——————————————————————————–

7. 1:15 Newcastle – Position Payout At bet365 Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

We return to Newcastle for a Class 5 Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, where the focus shifts to stamina. The demanding three-mile trip will be a stern test for this field of relatively unexposed hurdlers making their way in the handicap ranks. Identifying which horse will relish the step up in distance is crucial to solving this competitive event.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 7f 149y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. King Gris – 236

2. Big Zouk – 210

King Gris: 4-11 for recent stable/handicap debut at Ayr (2m3f) and won with authority, despite being 5lb out of the weights; followed up when 4-11 again at Hexham (2m4f, again heavy) yesterday, in much more workmanlike fashion but it did look as if he had more in the tank and would stay further; this would be a rapid return to action, under a double penalty, but he has a big chance if those exertions have not taken too much out of him.

Big Zouk: £160,000 buy after his point win but he’s not set the world alight in this three runs over hurdles, the first two of which were for James Ewart; stable debut (co-favourite) five weeks ago gave some encouragement for today’s return to a longer trip, though, and he needs a second look on this handicap debut.

Assessment of Chances

King Gris is the standout contender, arriving in search of a quick-fire hat-trick after winning at Ayr ten days ago and following up at Hexham just yesterday. Despite a double penalty and an exceptionally rapid return to the track, his form is compelling, and he has shaped as though this step up to three miles will suit. The main challenger, Big Zouk, makes his handicap debut with a more speculative profile. A costly purchase after a point win, he has yet to deliver on that promise but showed some encouragement on his recent stable debut. The move up in trip could unlock his potential.

Spotlight Verdict

This revolves around King Gris who did not have to pull out all the stops at Ayr ten days ago and gradually asserted under pressure at Hexham yesterday. This would be a marked step up in trip for him under rules but he looked in those wins as if he’d stay further and today’s rivals lack solid claims. If King Gris does not make such a quick return to action in his hat-trick bid, the best option may be BIG ZOUK who attracted money in a Hexham maiden last time, admittedly totally failing to justify that support but looking as if today’s longer trip would help. Carrhill is seriously unexposed and others could feature granted a return to form.[Richard Austen]

The action switches back to Warwick for a novices’ handicap chase.

——————————————————————————–

8. 1:25 Warwick – Aztec Aerosols Spray Some Joy Novices’ Handicap Chase

This Class 4 Novices’ Handicap Chase at Warwick presents a sharp test for horses in the early stages of their chasing careers. The two-mile trip over soft ground will demand both fluent jumping and a high cruising speed. In a competitive field, identifying the runner most likely to adapt to the larger obstacles and challenging conditions is the key to success.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 54y

• Going: Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Norn Iron – 333

2. Chuggy – 306

Norn Iron: Made the frame in three handicap hurdles (2m-2m3f, good-soft) before easily winning modest Plumpton maiden (2m, good) at skinny odds in April; open to improvement over fences this season; one to consider.

Chuggy: Low-mileage 5yo who battled gamely to make winning seasonal/chase debut at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in October and looked in even better nick when scoring by 8l here (2m4f, soft) three weeks ago; up another 9lb since last time but probably still improving; commands respect.

Assessment of Chances

Norn Iron tops the ratings on his chasing debut, bringing solid hurdles form into this new discipline. He ended last season with an easy win and is considered open to further improvement over fences, making him a strong contender. He faces a stiff challenge from Chuggy, who has already proven his aptitude for chasing with two wins from two starts. His most recent victory at this course was particularly impressive, and although he has been raised 9lb by the handicapper, this progressive five-year-old commands significant respect.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 6-year-olds have the best record with 3 wins from 16 starts.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a good record, with 2 wins from the last 4 runnings.

Spotlight Verdict

All nine runners have potential over fences but this may be fought out by the bottom two on the racecard. Course winner Chuggy is 2-2 over fences but slight preference is for RODNEY, who was unlucky not to make a winning chase debut at Bangor last month. Roysse tends to harm his chance by racing far too freely but he could take come catching around here if he gets into a good jumping rhythm.[Chris Wilson]

We return to Taunton for our next race, a competitive novices’ handicap hurdle.

——————————————————————————–

9. 1:35 Taunton – Boyle Sports Opening Soon In Taunton Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

This Class 5 Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Taunton features a large and competitive field, typical of races at this level. With many runners lightly raced and open to improvement on their handicap debuts, it presents a classic puzzle for form students. Finding a horse with an advantageous opening mark is often the key to unlocking this type of contest.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 104y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Getarose – 254

2. Premier – 252

Getarose: 13l second to Montemares (who looked a useful prospect winning next time) at Hereford last month, with that improved form owing more to experience than the step up to 2m4f; more needed again granted a tough opening mark.

Premier: Fair third of eight on last month’s Plumpton handicap hurdle debut (2m, good) on just his third start in this sphere; respected.

Assessment of Chances

The ratings point towards two promising young hurdlers. Getarose showed much-improved form on her latest start when finishing second to a horse who has since franked the form, suggesting she is progressing with experience. However, she faces a potentially tough opening handicap mark. In contrast, Premier has already made a promising start in handicaps, finishing a solid third at Plumpton on just his third career run over hurdles. That experience gives him a slight edge, and he is respected with further improvement likely.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: Records are mixed, with 5-year-olds and 7-year-olds both having 2 wins each from 22 and 11 starts respectively.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a poor record, with only one win from the last five runnings.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Jeremy Scott 0-1-1

Spotlight Verdict

Thankyouandplease won stylishly yesterday and has the same mark if he takes part again today. Plenty of the others are in the early throes of their handicap careers but, while respected, none of Premier, Exactly Right and Getarose appear on an obviously appealing mark. ST LUKES CHELSEA is more exposed than any of those but is at least receiving some assistance from the assessor now and there are grounds to believe that he was better than the margin beaten last time. The return to winning ways of the Walford yard in the past seven days augurs well, too. [Jeremy Grayson]

The focus now returns to Newcastle for a competitive handicap hurdle.

——————————————————————————–

10. 1:45 Newcastle – Never Ordinary At bet365 Handicap Hurdle

This Class 4 Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle is a qualifier for the Go North Cab On Target Series, adding an extra layer of incentive for the runners. The race, held over an intermediate trip of two-and-a-half miles, has attracted a large field of seasoned handicappers and less exposed types, making for a highly competitive and intriguing contest.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 4f 62y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Baratablet – 303

2. Singapore Trip – 269

Baratablet: Won maiden hurdle at Hexham (2m4f, good to soft) in March and back on the scoresheet at Perth (2m4f, good to soft) in April on second handicap start; this very lightly raced 5yo is in good hands to continue to progress.

Singapore Trip: Won at Wetherby (2m3f, good) in October after a break and 7l third behind well-handicapped winner there (2m3f, soft) a fortnight ago; chance.

Assessment of Chances

Baratablet emerges from the ratings as a leading contender, boasting a lightly raced and progressive profile. A winner on just his second handicap start back in April, this five-year-old returns from a break with considerable potential for further improvement and hails from a stable renowned for its handling of such types. He faces a solid opponent in Singapore Trip, who has the benefit of recent race fitness. A winner on his reappearance in October, he followed that with a creditable third-place finish and looks set to be competitive again.

Spotlight Verdict

The very lightly raced BARATABLET could be a 5yo to follow for Nicky Richards and is taken to make a winning return. Wasthatok won comfortably over C&D on his last hurdle start and is feared most ahead of Aire Spray, for whom the first-time cheekpieces could be a positive.[Ben Hutton]

Our attention now shifts to a high-class mares’ chase at Warwick.

——————————————————————————–

11. 1:55 Warwick – eventmasters.co.uk Lady Godiva Mares’ Novices’ Chase

Next up at Warwick is a high-quality affair, the Lady Godiva Mares’ Novices’ Chase, which holds prestigious Listed status. This race has attracted a small but select field of talented mares, and contests of this nature are often crucial stepping stones towards major festival targets later in the season. Quality, not quantity, is the theme here.

• Race Class: Listed

• Distance: 2m 4f

• Going: Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Diva Luna – 378

2. Wyenot – 334

Diva Luna: Grade 2 bumper winner who improved with experience over hurdles last season and was placed in mares’ novice at Cheltenham Festival (2m1f, good to soft) in March; had an excuse in final run (lame) last term and she reappeared with an impressive win in Listed event on chase debut at Bangor (2m1f, soft) last month; took her form to a new level with that dominant display and she’s a major player again on this step back up in trip.

Wyenot: Record of 5-11 over hurdles, including front-running win in Listed race at Doncaster (3m, good to soft) last season; started her chase career at Ludlow (3m, good) last month and she battled for a narrow success in that beginners’ event; should benefit from that reappearance run and this admirable mare is respected back at this trip.

Assessment of Chances

This contest features two high-class mares. Diva Luna appears to be the one to beat after a scintillating start to her chasing career, winning a Listed event at Bangor in dominant fashion. A Grade 2 bumper winner with strong hurdles form, she looks poised to take high rank among novice chasers this season. Her main rival, Wyenot, is an admirable and tough competitor with a strong record over hurdles, including a Listed win. She made a successful, if hard-fought, chase debut last month and is a respected opponent who will ensure the favorite does not have an easy time.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 7-year-olds have the best record with 3 wins from 12 runners, followed by 6-year-olds with 2 wins from 17.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a strong record in this race, winning 4 of the last 6 renewals.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Henry Daly 2-0-3

Spotlight Verdict

This can go to DIVA LUNA, who made an impressive start over fences with her dominant display in a Listed event at Bangor last month. She’s the clear pick on that form and this well-regarded 6yo could have a lot more to offer as a chaser. The main danger is Henry Daly’s admirable mare Wyenot, who kicked off her chase career with a brave win at Ludlow 17 days ago.[David Moon]

We now return to Taunton for a staying novices’ handicap chase.

——————————————————————————–

12. 2:05 Taunton – Prestige Holidays Novices’ Handicap Chase

This Class 4 Novices’ Handicap Chase at Taunton is set to be a true test of stamina, run over a demanding three-mile trip. The race is for novice chasers moving into handicap company, where their jumping will be put under pressure. Success will require both fencing fluency and the ability to see out the distance strongly.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 7f 3y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Below The Radar – 308

2. Kap Vert – 293

Below The Radar: Dual novice hurdle winner who went close to adding a handicap at Ayr in April (2m4f, good to soft); should be sharper for his Kempton third a month ago (2m5f) and there could be improvement in him over fences; this far should be within range.

Kap Vert: Exeter novice hurdle winner over 2m on soft a year ago; beaten in four handicaps but second at Fontwell (2m3f) before midfield at Cheltenham (2m5f); dam was a Listed winner over fences, so this could be more his game.

Assessment of Chances

Below The Radar heads the ratings and brings a solid profile into his second start over fences. As a dual hurdles winner who ran well in a competitive handicap, he has the right credentials, and he is expected to improve from his recent reappearance. His stamina for this trip is considered to be within range. Kap Vert, while having a mixed record in handicap hurdles, possesses a pedigree that strongly suggests chasing will be his forte. His dam was a Listed winner over fences, and this switch to the larger obstacles could unlock significant improvement.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 5-year-olds and 7-year-olds have each won once from 4 and 6 starts respectively.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a poor record, finishing 4th and 5th in the last two renewals.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Philip Hobbs & Johnson White 0-1-2

Spotlight Verdict

Cheltenham winner SMUGGLERS HAVEN (nap) remains on a competitive mark despite such a rock-solid start over fences and he could be a safer option than the likes of Kap Vert and Below The Radar, who lack chasing experience. Bertie Wooster may be the most troublesome should he repeat his good run here a fortnight ago.[Alistair Jones]

Next up is another novices’ handicap chase, this time back at Newcastle.

——————————————————————————–

13. 2:15 Newcastle – bet365 Novices’ Handicap Chase

A small but select field is set to contest this Class 4 Novices’ Handicap Chase at Newcastle. Run over a staying trip of nearly three miles, this race will place a premium on stamina and jumping proficiency. With only five runners declared, tactical awareness could play a significant role in the outcome.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 7f 91y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Paddy O’Mahler – 261

2. Jo Coko – 253

Paddy O’Mahler: Just 1-15 over hurdles; runner-up when sent chasing last month at Market Rasen (3m1f, good to soft) and Wetherby (3m, soft) but he seemingly needs to jump better than he did in the latter contest.

Jo Coko: Won Irish maiden point (3m, heavy) in February 2024; placed last winter in two maiden hurdles (3m, soft) before a disappointing show in February (2m4f, good to soft) when last seen; has since left James Ewart; straight to chasing on handicap debut for new yard and interesting judged on best efforts.

Assessment of Chances

Paddy O’Mahler has made a solid start to his chasing career, finishing second on both of his outings. While his jumping has room for improvement, his consistency makes him a leading contender. The main challenge comes from Jo Coko, an intriguing runner making his debut for a new stable. A point-to-point winner, his best hurdles form suggests he has the ability to feature, and his profile makes him an interesting prospect as he embarks on his chasing and handicap career simultaneously.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 6-year-olds and 7-year-olds each have 1 win from 4 and 3 starts respectively.

• Fate of Favourites: The favourite has a perfect record, winning both of the last two runnings.

Spotlight Verdict

Cosmic Blizzard (second choice) was runner-up last time and Paddy O’Mahler was on his last two starts but preference is for the lightly raced and unexposed JO COKO, who makes his stable, handicap and chase debut but looked promising on his two best hurdle performances for James Ewart last term.[Richard Austen]

The action continues with a competitive handicap hurdle at Warwick.

——————————————————————————–

14. 2:25 Warwick – SG Fleet In Partnership With Barnardos Handicap Hurdle

This Class 4 Handicap Hurdle at Warwick is a competitive affair, featuring several progressive and potentially well-handicapped runners. Over two miles and five furlongs, the race will require a blend of speed and stamina, and with a number of runners holding strong claims, it promises to be an exciting contest.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 5f

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

The ratings identify a tight contest at the top, with Marlacoo narrowly leading the field. Two rivals are tied just one point behind.

1. Marlacoo – 288

2. Confinentic – 287

Marlacoo: Below form when favourite for 18-runner Cheltenham handicap last month but was clear second at Chepstow (2m7f, good; also suited by soft) in October, after a break, and has strong claims here if back at that level; visor added today.

Confinentic: Unexposed 5yo with 2-3 strike-rate over hurdles, the latter win gained on handicap debut at Plumpton (2m4f, soft) in February; has fitness to prove after ten-month break but is open to significant improvement this season.

Assessment of Chances

Marlacoo brings strong form to the table, with his excellent second-place finish at Chepstow in October marking him as a key player. If he can bounce back from a below-par run at Cheltenham last time, he has every chance. The lightly raced Confinentic represents a different profile, arriving with an unexposed and progressive record of two wins from three starts. He makes his seasonal return after a ten-month absence, and while fitness is a concern, he possesses significant potential for improvement this season.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 5-year-olds have the strongest recent record with 3 wins from 32 starts.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a very poor record, with only one winner in the last seven renewals.

Spotlight Verdict

Low-mileage 6yo Jackpot d’Ainay moves up in trip after running well on his seasonal debut and is not opposed lightly but another chance is given to MARLACOO (nap), who didn’t really fire at Cheltenham last month but is interesting if judged on his Chepstow second in October. Meanwhile, Confinentic is 2-3 over hurdles and could be dangerous if ready to roll after his ten-month absence.[Chris Wilson]

We return to Taunton for one of the feature handicaps of the day.

——————————————————————————–

15. 2:35 Taunton – Summerfield Handicap Hurdle

The Summerfield Handicap Hurdle is one of the day’s higher-class contests, a Class 3 event that has attracted a deep and talented field. Over two miles and three furlongs, this race will be run at a strong pace, and with numerous in-form and well-regarded hurdlers lining up, it promises to be a true test of ability and resolution.

• Race Class: 3

• Distance: 2m 3f 1y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Just A Rose – 324

2. Melton Mossy – 293

Just A Rose: Absent and had wind surgery since pulling up at the Cheltenham Festival where lack of experience counted against her; 2-2 otherwise (point/hurdle) and she may have more to offer back down in class on her return; needs a close look.

Melton Mossy: Refused to race at Ludlow last month but he resumed his progress with a comfortable win over C&D (good to firm) two weeks ago; up 7lb but he’s now 5-18 over hurdles and should get a decent tow into this race; key player.

Assessment of Chances

Just A Rose tops the ratings despite a long absence, which speaks to her considerable untapped potential. A winner of her only two completed starts, she returns from a break and a wind operation, dropping in class from her last run at the Cheltenham Festival. If she retains her ability, she could be very well-handicapped. In contrast, Melton Mossy brings strong recent form to the race, having won comfortably over this course and distance just two weeks ago. Despite a 7lb rise in the weights, his progressive profile makes him a key player.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds share the best record with 3 wins each.

• Fate of Favourites: The favourite’s record is mixed, with two wins in the last ten runnings but several placed efforts.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Evan Williams 1-0-4, Paul Nicholls 1-4-9, Harry Fry 0-1-2, Jeremy Scott 0-1-6

Spotlight Verdict

6yo MELTON MOSSY blotted his copybook by refusing to race at Ludlow but he resumed his progress with a comfortable win over C&D two weeks ago. He still looks feasibly treated off his revised mark and may be able to strike again to make it 6-19 over hurdles. Last year’s winner Him Malaya was an eyecatching third behind the selection here last month and he’s feared most ahead of his very lightly raced stablemate Just A Rose.[David Moon]

Attention now turns back to Newcastle for a handicap chase.

——————————————————————————–

16. 2:45 Newcastle – Best Odds Guaranteed At bet365 Handicap Chase

This Class 4 Handicap Chase at Newcastle is another qualifier, this time for the Go North Monet’s Garden Series. Run over two and a half miles, it has attracted a competitive field where several runners hold plausible claims. It’s a race where jumping rhythm and tactical positioning will be key to securing victory.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 2m 4f 19y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. One More Stroke – 267

2. Jet Legs – 256

One More Stroke: Won at Musselburgh (2m7f, good to soft) in February and continued to run well for the rest of the season; reappeared with 13l fourth of eight in warm handicap at Wetherby (3m, good) and this 6yo may be suited by the drop back in distance; could be thereabouts.

Jet Legs: Won in first-time visor at Hexham (2m4f, good to soft), which he’s been without on both runs this autumn; close third at Carlisle (3m, good) on first occasion then weakened there (3m2f, good to soft) last time; the visor returns and this course winner could benefit from the drop back in trip; chance.

Assessment of Chances

One More Stroke put in a solid performance on his reappearance in a warm handicap at Wetherby and is expected to be suited by the drop back in trip today. His consistent form from last season suggests he will be in the mix. The ratings also highlight Jet Legs, a previous course winner who could be set for a big run. The key to his chances may be the reapplication of the visor, an piece of equipment he wore for a previous victory at Hexham. After two runs over longer trips this autumn, the return to this distance could also prove beneficial.

Spotlight Verdict

The lightly raced 6yo JOECOOKER made an encouraging start to his career over fences in a warm beginners’ chase at Carlisle recently and earns the vote now back in a handicap. The drop back in trip could be a positive for course winner Jet Legs and he is second choice ahead of One More Stroke, who could build upon his reappearance run in a warm race at Wetherby.[Ben Hutton]

We now move to Warwick for a staying handicap chase.

——————————————————————————–

17. 2:55 Warwick – Larkshill Engineering Ltd Handicap Chase

This Class 4 Handicap Chase at Warwick will be a thorough examination of stamina, contested over three miles on soft ground. For horses in this class, such conditions can often prove decisive, sorting the genuine stayers from those who may not see out the trip. Resilient and battle-hardened chasers are often the ones to come to the fore.

• Race Class: 4

• Distance: 3m

• Going: Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Jupiter Des Bordes – 262

2. Pescatorius – 253

Jupiter Des Bordes: 0-6 over fences; battled on for respectable third on seasonal debut at Wetherby (3m, soft) last month and remains unexposed over 3m but seems one-paced and others in this line-up appeal more.

Pescatorius: In good form for Olly Murphy this autumn, winning in blinkers at Sedgefield (3m2f, good to firm) and Market Rasen (2m5f, good to soft); moves up in grade for this stable debut, though, and the slower ground may not be ideal; cheekpieces refitted.

Assessment of Chances

Jupiter Des Bordes rates highly after a respectable third on his seasonal return at Wetherby. While still a maiden over fences, he is unexposed as a stayer and that run suggests he is in good form. However, his one-paced nature is a concern. The main challenger, Pescatorius, arrives in excellent form having won his last two starts. He makes his debut for a new stable today, but a key question mark is his ability to handle the soft ground, which may not be to his liking.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 6-year-olds have the best record, with 3 wins from 17 runners.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a strong recent record, winning 4 of the last 7 runnings.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Emma Lavelle 1-0-2, Richard Hobson 0-1-1

Spotlight Verdict

A few of these are of interest for one reason or another but veteran mare LAZY SUNDAY gave a good account of herself on last month’s seasonal debut and is arguably the one with least to prove. Jack Sprat clearly wasn’t himself when last in action but his hurdling second two starts ago was a good effort and he is second choice. Malfoy Manor has been given a wind op before this second run for Dan Skelton and is open to improvement, while Star Of Diamonds remains unexposed and Haut Folin may have benefited from a break.[Chris Wilson]

The analysis moves back to Taunton for a handicap chase.

——————————————————————————–

18. 3:05 Taunton – Sandals Resorts Handicap Chase

The penultimate race from Taunton is a Class 5 Handicap Chase that looks to be a wide-open and competitive affair. With a field full of seasoned campaigners, many of whom have winning form under similar conditions, this race is likely to be closely fought from start to finish.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 2f 40y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Chief O’Hara – 238

2. Inchagoill Lady – 230

Chief O’Hara: Winning pointer; lightly raced under rules and came readily clear over C&D two weeks ago (good to firm; previous encouraging run was on soft); a 7lb rise would be manageable if he’s not flattered by that.

Inchagoill Lady: Her win here in April was over 3m on good to firm (can handle softer); back from another wind operation when a 10l second at Hereford (2m5f, good) last time, proving no match for the easy winner; even if holding her form, this drop in distance doesn’t look a positive.

Assessment of Chances

Chief O’Hara is the clear top-rated contender following a highly impressive victory over this course and distance just two weeks ago. As a lightly raced individual, he may have more improvement to come, and a 7lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop him if he is in the same form. The veteran mare Inchagoill Lady also brings solid recent form, having finished second at Hereford last time out. However, while she is a previous winner at this track, her best form has come over longer distances, and the drop back in trip for this race is a significant concern.

Spotlight Verdict

An open handicap. CHIEF O’HARA took a sizeable step forward here two weeks ago and he’s unexposed. Grain Trade’s last run was too bad to be true but he had been coming along well before that and he’s second choice ahead of McGrath From Clune, Owl Of Athens and Palawan Du Mazet.[Alistair Jones]

Next, we return to Newcastle for the National Hunt Flat Race.

——————————————————————————–

19. 3:15 Newcastle – Each Way Extra At bet365 Open NH Flat Race

The penultimate race at Newcastle is a Class 5 National Hunt Flat Race, often referred to as a “bumper.” These races provide a valuable opportunity to witness potential future stars making their first appearances on a racecourse. With many runners making their debut, the focus is often on pedigree, trainer form, and any positive signs in the betting market.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 190y

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Tea Boy – 209

2. Ronnie Russet – 209

Tea Boy: 6l runner-up to subsequent novice hurdle winner on debut at Hexham (2m, good to soft) in March; took a backwards step at Catterick (1m7f, good) three weeks ago but major player if tapping back into his debut promise.

Ronnie Russet: 16-5 when failing to threaten on debut at Hexham (2m, good to soft) last month; however, his dam was a bumper winner who is from a talented family and he’s open to improvement; no surprise to see a good run.

Assessment of Chances

The ratings cannot separate Tea Boy and Ronnie Russet. Tea Boy showed significant promise on his debut when finishing second to a subsequent winner, and if he can forgive a poor run last time, he is a major player. Ronnie Russet failed to make an impact on his debut but comes from a talented family and is considered open to significant improvement with that initial experience under his belt. A much better performance would not be a surprise.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds have each won once from 10 and 8 starts respectively.

• Fate of Favourites: The favourite has a perfect record, winning both of the last two renewals.

Spotlight Verdict

The standard set by those who have raced isn’t a strong one and this could go to the debutant THORNEYLANDS for the in-form Nicky Richards. The main threat could come from Tea Boy, who is better than he showed at Catterick last time. The newcomer Rubinio is another interesting contender, while Ronnie Russet is open to improvement on this second start.[Ben Hutton]

We now move to Warwick for the final bumper race of the day.

——————————————————————————–

20. 3:25 Warwick – Whites Of Coventry & Jic Logistics Ltd NH Flat Race

This Class 5 National Hunt Flat Race at Warwick is reserved for conditional and amateur riders, adding an extra layer of challenge to an already difficult puzzle. With a field of inexperienced horses, the guidance from the saddle is crucial. Evaluating the form of those who have run against the potential of the newcomers is the key to this contest.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m

• Going: Good To Soft

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Eternity Rose – 255

2. Tandys Bridge – 226

Eternity Rose: Kept on from rear for clear third of 12 on debut at Doncaster (good) in March; did not look straightforward when coming under pressure that day but can improve if he learnt from the experience.

Tandys Bridge: Out of a half-sister to two bumper winners; split two next-time-out winners when close second on debut at Killarney (yielding to soft) in July and sets the form standard on this stable debut.

Assessment of Chances

This bumper features two promising individuals. Eternity Rose made a solid debut when finishing a clear third at Doncaster. While she appeared somewhat green under pressure, she is entitled to improve significantly for that experience. However, she may have to play second fiddle to Tandys Bridge, who sets a strong form standard based on his debut second in an Irish bumper. The horses that finished first and third in that race have both won since, making his performance look particularly strong. He is a key contender on his first start for a new stable.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 4-year-olds have a strong record with 5 wins from 61 starts.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have a decent record with 3 wins from the last 7 runnings.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Ben Pauling 2-1-6, Dan Skelton 1-1-6, Alan King 0-2-3

Spotlight Verdict

Cheap Sandwiches came third in an Irish point that has worked out well in March and looks interesting on his rules debut but TANDY’S BRIDGE was a creditable second at Killarney during the summer and is taken to go one better for his new stable. Holeheartedly, Old Clayesmorian and Sassella Storm are three appealing newcomers.[Chris Wilson]

We conclude our analysis with the final race of the day from Taunton.

——————————————————————————–

21. 3:35 Taunton – Jetset/Dave Criddle Travel Handicap Hurdle

The day’s racing concludes at Taunton with a challenging Class 5 Handicap Hurdle over a marathon trip of nearly three miles. This long-distance contest will require immense stamina and resolve from both horse and rider. With a large field set to face the starter, it promises to be a competitive and thrilling finale to the day’s action.

• Race Class: 5

• Distance: 2m 7f 198y

• Going: Good

TimeWise Master Top-Two Rated

1. Square Du Roule – 265

2. Hardy Buck – 246

Square Du Roule: Masterful kid-gloves ride by Harry Cobden (retained today) to get up late on at Exeter (2m5f, good to soft) latest; 2lb worse off with close third Ask Her Out and not obviously bred for further, but confidence at a high.

Hardy Buck: 7lb well in following last week’s Exeter success (2m7f, good to soft) on stable debut, for which Luke Scott couldn’t claim; needs to build on that, but at the correct end of the weights to do so.

Assessment of Chances

Two recent winners dominate the ratings for this staying handicap. Square Du Roule arrives with confidence high after a well-judged victory at Exeter last time out. While his pedigree raises a slight stamina doubt for this longer trip, his current form makes him a major player. He faces a significant threat from Hardy Buck, who also scored last week at Exeter. That win came on his stable debut, and he is theoretically 7lb “well in” at the weights today, giving him a clear advantage from a handicapping perspective if he can repeat that performance.

Key Statistics

• Age Groups: 5-year-olds have the best record with 2 wins from 16 starts.

• Fate of Favourites: Favourites have an excellent record, winning 3 of the last 4 renewals.

• Trainers in this Race (w-pl-r): Nigel Hawke 1-0-2, Helen Nelmes 0-1-3, Neil Mulholland 0-1-2

Spotlight Verdict

It would be no great shock were Square Du Roule to uphold recent superiority over Ask Her Out with Harry Cobden retained, nor were fellow last-time Exeter scorer Hardy Buck to cash in again on a still rock-bottom mark now that he should have his confidence restored. ELUSIVE KNIGHT has more to take on trust judged on his maiden hurdle efforts, but the step up from 2m-2m2f rates a real plus for this one-time Yorkshire point winner, as does the enlisting of James Bowen’s services. [Jeremy Grayson]

This concludes the detailed analysis for the day’s racing action across Newcastle, Warwick, and Taunton.
