– Blackmore Building Contractors Novices’ Hurdle (Div 2)

2m½f | Class 4 | Good to Soft | 13 runners

This is a split-division novice but the second half still revolves around one very solid piece of recent form. Hereford at this trip rewards positive tactics, fluency and fitness, and novices who already know the place hold a clear edge.

The Shape of the Race

There isn’t much confirmed pace outside of one obvious source, and plenty here are either inexperienced, weak finishers, or both. That points strongly towards a race where track position decides it early, rather than something coming late from the clouds.

Key Contenders

Vol Royale (IRE)
Everything screams “right race”.
Only last-time-out winner
Only course, distance and CD winner
• Made all here last month and did it comfortably, pulling clear after the last
• Harry Cobden back on is a big plus

He’s already shown he handles Hereford, the ground, the trip and pressure. In a novice full of question marks, that’s gold dust. If he’s allowed to dictate again, they’ll struggle to peg him back.

Aguellid (FR)
The main danger on form rather than experience. His Exeter third was better than it looks — travelled strongly, raced keenly, and still finished his race despite a mistake. First-time hood could help him settle. The worry is he’s yet to win and still learning, but ability-wise he’s the one with upside.

Peter’s Last Deal (FR)
Consistent without being flashy. Twice placed here, finishes his races honestly, and should be staying on again. He lacks the kick of the top two but looks a solid place type if others fail to progress.

Lyric (IRE)
Interesting on paper coming from the Flat, but his jumping experience hasn’t yet translated into results. He’ll need improvement for hurdling and track craft — more one for later in the season.

Others

Most of the remainder have either poor hurdle form, jumping issues, or stamina doubts. A few are first-timers over hurdles, which always carries potential, but this isn’t the easiest place to learn.

Verdict

This is much more about what’s proven than what might happen.

Vol Royale sets the standard and looks the most likely winner again if running anywhere near his last race.
Aguellid is the danger if settling better.
Peter’s Last Deal makes most sense for the places.
