Race: Bobbyjo Day February 21st Handicap Hurdle
Going: Heavy
There is no need to overcomplicate the 3.30 at Fairyhouse today. The race is essentially a rematch of a contest at Punchestown 22 days ago, and the mathematics of handicapping suggest a different result this afternoon.
The Selection: FOLLY MASTER (2/1)
The case for Folly Master is purely logical. When these two met at Punchestown last month on similar soft-to-heavy ground, Lough Nigara beat Folly Master by five-and-a-half lengths.
However, context is everything.
At Punchestown: Folly Master was conceding a massive 16lbs to Lough Nigara.
Today: Due to Lough Nigara’s 7lb rise and Folly Master’s steady mark, that concession is reduced to just 10lbs.
That is a 6lb weight swing in Folly Master’s favour. In heavy, stamina-sapping conditions over 2m 4½f, a 6lb pull is substantial.
Folly Master is the most consistent horse in the lineup (Form: 11F2122) and sits top of the ratings for a reason. He was asked to give away too much weight last time and still finished a clear second. Today, the terms are fairer, and his class should tell.
The Danger: Themanintheanorak (7/2)
If the top two get involved in a duel and tire each other out, Themanintheanorak is the one to pick up the pieces.
He arrives fresh off a 74-day break—a distinct advantage at this time of year when others have been slogging through deep winter ground. He finished second over this course and distance in November and, crucially, he drops in grade. With Michael Kenneally’s 7lb claim, he is effectively carrying just 11-4, which makes him dangerous.
The Verdict
Lough Nigara has had his day in the sun; the handicapper has likely caught up with him. Folly Master is the superior animal and, on these revised terms, he is the one to be on.
Win: Folly Master
Forecast: Folly Master to beat Themanintheanorak
