Tomorrow’s 4.22 at Wolverhampton is a small but select Class 2 handicap over the marathon trip of two miles. In a field of six, tactics often trump pure stamina, and that makes the market leader, Ribble Vibe, look a tad vulnerable at the current prices.
The Selection: Brasil Power (FR)
Trainer: George Boughey | Jockey: Pat Cosgrave | Odds: 9/2
While he was third to Ribble Vibe at Newcastle last month, Brasil Power looks the percentage call to reverse that form on the tighter turns of Dunstall Park. George Boughey’s yard is in clinical form right now, operating at a 29% strike rate for the year, and this horse has been specifically found a winning opportunity.
Crucially, he tops the HorseRaceBase ratings (362.1) and possesses a sharper turn of foot than most in this field. In a race where Sax Appeal is likely to lead at a steady clip, having the tactical speed to strike off a slow pace is vital. Brasil Power has already proven he loves this track (Course Winner) and looks primed to pounce in the final furlong.
The Main Threat: Enemy
Trainer: Ian Williams | Jockey: Edward Greatrex | Odds: 100/30
If this becomes a true test of stamina, the old warrior Enemy is the one to fear. He was visually impressive when winning “going away” at Southwell on New Year’s Day and remains a class act at this level. However, his “hold-up” style is a gamble in a six-runner race—if the leaders don’t go fast enough, he may find himself with too much ground to make up when the sprint for home begins.
The Favorite: Ribble Vibe (IRE)
Trainer: David O’Meara | Jockey: Cieren Fallon | Odds: 5/2
Reliable, consistent, and a C&D winner. He’ll be popular with the “short-price” punters, but at 5/2, there’s very little juice left in the price. He meets Brasil Power on slightly worse terms today and might lack the raw speed required if the race turns into a tactical dash.
The Verdict
Brasil Power is the “no-nonsense” bet. He has the best speed ratings in the field, a red-hot trainer, and the perfect racing style for a small-field tactical battle at Wolverhampton.
