Leicester 2.05: Don’t Get Sunk in the Leicester Mud🏇⤵️👇

·

Four runners, two miles of heavy Leicester turf, and a tactical headache. In a small-field novice handicap chase like this, you aren’t looking for the fastest horse; you’re looking for the one that won’t fold when the oxygen runs out at the second last.
Here is the no-nonsense breakdown for the 2.05 tomorrow.
The Market Leaders: Boom or Bust?
Mon Champion (2/1) The ratings love him (302.6), and the Paul Nicholls/Freddie Gingell factor usually demands respect. He arrives off a gutsy win at Hereford, but look closer at the “Run Comments.” In two of his last four starts, he was “dropped away” and “tailed off.” On a testing track like Leicester in the heavy ground, that lack of consistency is a massive red flag for a short-priced favourite.
Epic West (9/4) This is the “solid” play. Jamie Snowden’s yard is flying (36% strike rate in the last fortnight), and Gavin Sheehan is operating at 25%. Unlike the favourite, this horse is a model of consistency. He was narrowly denied in the final 50 yards at Warwick just three weeks ago. He’s fit, he’s hardy, and he’s carrying a lovely weight of 11-3.
The Rest: Up Against It
Largy Belter (3/1): Top weight (11-7) and still a maiden after five starts. He took a keen hold and weakened late last time out—not a profile you want to back on a bog.
Milan Tino (4/1): Plenty of experience, but his jumping can be erratic and he looked “beaten before the last” at Doncaster. He’ll need the others to underperform to get his head in front.
The Verdict
In a four-runner slog, you want the horse from the form yard. Epic West has the tactical speed to lead or sit prominent, the fitness from a recent near-miss, and the best jockey/trainer stats in the book. While Mon Champion has the higher ceiling, Epic West has the higher floor—and on heavy ground, that’s where the money is.
The Selection: Epic West (IRE)
