Don’t overcomplicate the 3.12 at Newcastle today. This Class 6 handicap might look messy on paper, but the data has boiled it down to a straight shootout between two horses. The rest are making up the numbers.
Here is why Highland Harvey is the bet of the day, and why the market has got Free Pic completely wrong.
The Selection: Highland Harvey (5/2)
This has “plot job” written all over it. Here is the evidence:
The Sniper Stat: Trainer Denis Quinn has sent just one runner to this meeting. When Quinn travels with a single horse on the Flat, he boasts a £40.00 level stakes profit. He isn’t coming to Newcastle for the fresh air.
Unexposed Profile: While the others have shown their hand, Harvey is just getting started for this yard. His 2nd place at Wolverhampton six days ago was a massive step forward. He was beaten only 1.3L and looked like he was crying out for this stiff finish.
The Weights: After Connor Planas’s 3lb claim, Harvey carries a featherweight 8-9. In a slog over 1m 4f on the Tapeta, receiving weight from the favourite is a massive advantage.
The Danger: Havachoc (9/4)
The current favourite is the only legitimate threat. He’s won his last two and is clearly in the form of his life.
The Smart Angle: Despite a penalty for his recent win, the 5lb claim from jockey C. Horgan is a masterstroke. It effectively wipes out his penalty and keeps him dangerous. He will likely try to make all, but he has to give 9lbs (in real terms) to Highland Harvey. That is a big ask late on.
The Trap: Why You Must Oppose Free Pic (15/8)
The market has Free Pic at a skinny 15/8, which is frankly ridiculous. Do not fall for it.
The Maths: Ten days ago at Southwell, Havachoc beat Free Pic by 5 lengths.
The Kicker: In that race, Havachoc gave Free Pic 1lb. Today, after claims, Havachoc is effectively giving her nothing.
Conclusion: Free Pic is meeting the horse that thrashed her on worse terms. Unless Havachoc falls in a hole, she cannot reverse the form. She is a terrible price.
The Verdict
The Quinn stable means business with Highland Harvey. He is unexposed, well-weighted, and overpriced compared to the exposed runners around him.
Win: Highland Harvey
The Saver: Straight Forecast (Exacta): Highland Harvey to beat Havachoc.
