The 5lb Swing: Why Sir Maxi Upsets the Newcastle Odds🏇⤵️👇

Sunday afternoon racing on the Tapeta often throws up a few traps for the casual punter, and today’s Classified Stakes at Newcastle is a prime example. On paper, I Can Boogy looks the obvious winner. She won over this course and distance just 11 days ago, looking like a horse ahead of her mark.
But if you dig into the mechanics of this race, she is a classic vulnerable favourite.
The Pace Trap
The pace forecast here is weak. Sold Out is the likely leader, but he’s a maiden who tends to fold when pressed, so he’s unlikely to set a scorching gallop. This is bad news for I Can Boogy. She’s a hold-up horse who often starts slowly. If the pace crawls, the leaders will save their energy for a sprint finish, making it incredibly difficult for her to make up ground from the back, especially carrying a penalty.
The Weight Swing
This is where the value lies. When I Can Boogy beat Sir Maxi here on February 4th, she won by a length and a quarter. However, she was effectively receiving weight that day. Today, under Classified Stakes conditions and her penalty, she carries 9-11 while Sir Maxi sits on 9-9.
That represents a 5lb swing in Sir Maxi’s favour for a beating of just over a length. In a low-grade contest like this, that is a massive advantage.
The Contenders
Sir Maxi (13/2) is the bet. Ignore his run five days ago; that was over six furlongs, which is far too sharp for him at age eight. It was a pipe-opener. Back over the mile, with the weight pull in his favour and eight career wins to his name (compared to a field full of maidens), he is the class act in the race.
Bossy Parker (7/2) is the danger. He’s on a massive losing streak (24 runs), which makes him hard to trust on the nose, but the slow pace suits him perfectly. He’ll sit handy, get the first run on the leaders, and likely hit the frame. He’s the one to put in your forecasts.
Bandello and Sold Out have zero wins between them in 31 combined starts. They are there to make up the numbers. Starshot has the tongue-tie back on, which makes him interesting at a huge price, but he’s risky.
The Verdict
Don’t take the short price on the favourite. The race conditions have swung against her. Back the veteran to use the weight advantage and course experience to turn the tables.
Selection: Sir Maxi (Win)
Saver: Bossy Parker (Reverse Forecast with Sir Maxi)
