Carlisle’s uphill finish on soft ground is one of the sternest tests in the North, and today’s 3.35 handicap hurdle is shaping up to be a tactical battle where the early speed might just be the undoing of the market leaders.
The Pace Trap
The forecast is for a strong pace, which immediately puts a target on the back of the front-runners. Vampire Slayer has been in superb form, dominating from the flag at Catterick and Sedgefield, but he’s up 9 lbs and faces much more pressure today. Likewise, He’s Bresilian likes to be at the sharp end. On this ground, if these two get into a “burn-up” early, they’ll likely empty their tanks before the final two flights.
The Value Angle
If the leaders collapse, the race falls into the lap of the closers. Data from the Timeform Specific Pace Hint highlights Interchangeable as the one to benefit. While his recent form figures aren’t pretty, he is a Carlisle specialist who is now 4 lbs lower in the weights. His “in-running low” in previous starts suggests he has more to give than his finishing positions show. At 20/1, he is the definitive “stat play” for those looking for each-way value.
The Class Act
However, the most logical winner is Soldier’s Leap. He looked like a horse transformed when winning on the bridle at Uttoxeter in the autumn. His fifth-place finish at Newbury last time out was a massive effort in a much higher grade than this. He travels with immense cruise, handles the soft conditions, and Jack Andrews is a master at timing a challenge. He can sit mid-pack, let the leaders tire themselves out, and pick them off on the climb.
The Dark Horse
Keep a very close eye on Azahara Palace. Making a handicap debut under Brian Hughes is often a recipe for success. She has plenty of speed from her days on the Flat, and if Hughes can keep her in contention turning for home, she might just have too much toe for these seasoned hurdlers.
The Verdict
Forget the short prices on the recent winners. The smart money is on the class drop and the tactical advantage of the closers. Soldier’s Leap is the pick to grind it out, with Interchangeable the massive price alternative if the pace is as suicidal as predicted.
