Race Dynamics: The True Pace Map
Context: Class 4 Novice Hurdle | 2m ½f | Soft Ground | Right-Handed Sharp Track
With Shotgun Shirley declared a non-runner, the projected “Strong” pace might be slightly diluted, but we still have genuine front-running intent.
The Leaders (Pace Setters):
Charisma Cat: Made all or prominent in recent starts. She won’t want a sprint finish carrying a penalty, so expect Tom Bellamy to turn the screw early.
Trinity Street: Led before 3 out last time at Chepstow. She has natural gate speed and will likely dispute the lead or sit on Charisma Cat’s girth.
The Stalkers (In the Garden Spot):
Khrisma (FR): Nico de Boinville will likely anchor her just behind the leading pair. She travels kindly and this sharp track suits a horse that can cruise into contention on the bend.
No Tricks At All: Prominent racer who will look to hold position on the rail.
The Closers:
Getawhisky: A strong traveler who is usually held up. She needs the leaders to come back to her. If Charisma Cat and Trinity Street cut each other’s throats, she is the primary beneficiary.
Edith Pelham: Likely to be ridden patiently to pick up pieces.
Analysis: This looks like an even gallop set by Charisma Cat. Market Rasen is a sharp track where it pays to be handy, but the Soft ground will test the stamina of the front-runners in the final furlong.
Critique of Key Runners
1. KHRISMA (FR) (6/5 Fav)
The Case: On pure mathematics, she is the standout. She lost by a nose to Watamu last time giving away 7lbs. Today, she meets Watamu on level weights. That is a massive swing in her favour. She is the highest-rated runner (127) and represents the Henderson powerhouse.
The Risk: She has a touch of the “character” about her. She wandered and idled when hitting the front at Huntingdon. She needs to be delivered late; if she hits the front too soon, she gives others a chance.
2. GETAWHISKY (4/1)
The Case: Dan Skelton has a 22% strike rate at Market Rasen since 2021. This mare travels with real purpose. Her win at Windsor was authoritative, and she looks like the type who improves with every run.
The Risk: She can be a bit keen. If the pace slackens due to the non-runner, she could pull her chance away. She needs cover and a good rhythm.
3. CHARISMA CAT (3/1)
The Case: A tenacious winner at Chepstow. She jumps well and has a winning attitude.
The Risk: She carries a penalty (11-9) giving weight to unexposed types like Trinity Street. Conceding weight on Soft ground at a sharp track against a Henderson hotpot is a tall order.
4. TRINITY STREET (IRE) (9/1 – Dark Horse)
The Angle: Watch the replay of her Chepstow run. She hung badly right when the pressure came on. Chepstow is left-handed. Market Rasen is right-handed. This switch in track orientation could be the making of her. She receives 7lbs from the top three in the market.
The Professional Verdict
The withdrawal of Shotgun Shirley clarifies the picture. Charisma Cat will likely try to grind this out from the front, but she faces a distinct disadvantage at the weights.
The Winner: KHRISMA (FR)
It is difficult to look past the handicapping mechanics here. The 7lb swing with Watamu makes that form line concrete, and she has superior speed figures to Charisma Cat. Provided de Boinville times his challenge to perfection—delaying his run until after the last hurdle to prevent her from idling—she has too much class for this field.
The Forecast (Exacta): KHRISMA to beat GETAWHISKY
While Charisma Cat is tough, the penalty on Soft ground makes her vulnerable to a closer. Getawhisky travels like a horse rated higher than 120 and should swoop late to grab the silver medal. Skelton targets this track for a reason.
The Value Angle: TRINITY STREET (Each Way / Without the Fav)
At 9/1 or 10/1, she is the value play. The switch to a right-handed track is a massive equipment change in itself. She gets weight from the main protagonists, and if the leaders falter, she is the one likely to be in the firing line. She is a solid option for “Betting Without the Favourite” markets.
Summary Strategy
Win: KHRISMA (Banker material, despite the short price).
CSF/Exacta: 3-2 (Khrisma / Getawhisky).
Saver: TRINITY STREET (Small EW or Place only).
