The market for this Class 5 handicap is headed by Hidor De Bersy, who finally opened his account in a three-runner affair at Wincanton in December. While a 3lb rise looks lenient on paper, that race was a tactical muddling event that proves little. A review of his HRB run comments reveals a horse with a history of finding less than expected (“headed and dropped to 3rd”, “weakened quickly”, “no extra”), and Timeform rightly notes a record of getting beaten at short prices. Jaffa Cake is feared on connections but brings very thin form, having been beaten 22 lengths last time out.
HEAVEN SMART (FR) makes considerable appeal switching back to the smaller obstacles. The nine-year-old has been campaigning creditably over fences, winning at Perth in September and posting a respectable speed figure when third at Musselburgh last time out off a mark of 102. He reverts to hurdles here off a mark of 99, which looks exploitable given his chase proficiency.
Crucially, the Timeform Pace Forecast is “Weak.” Heaven Smart has proven tactical versatility, having “made all” to win at Perth (24 Sep 25) and racing prominently in other chase starts. In a field lacking pace, Brian Hughes—who operates at a 21% strike rate at Southwell—is well-positioned to dictate matters or sit just off the lead, avoiding the trouble in running that often befalls hold-up horses on the turning track here.
HorseRaceBase data ranks him top on their specific ratings (241.4 total), clear of the field. His consistency profile (hitting the frame in 3 of his last 4 completions) is superior to the majority of this field who arrive with letters rather than numbers in their form figures.
For a value alternative, EVER READY catches the eye at a bigger price. Timeform’s pace analysis explicitly suggests a steadily run race will assist her. She was outpaced over 2m at Market Rasen on her handicap debut but stayed on past beaten horses. The step up to 2m4.5f looks a necessary move, and Pam Sly’s runners often improve significantly for a step up in distance on their second handicap start.
