Race Overview7.00 Kempton – Novice Stakes (Rider Restricted) (Class 4)🏇⤵️👇

·

Conditions: 7f (Polytrack), Standard to Slow.
Field: 12 runners (predominantly 3yo, with one 4yo).
Context: A statistically weak novice event with an average Official Rating of just 7 and a median of 0. The race effectively splits into three tiers: the clear form standard (Comic Hero), the improvers (Portman Blue), and the newcomers/low-grade remainder.
Draw/Bias: Kempton 7f favors low numbers due to the short run to the first bend. The “Standard to Slow” surface can exacerbate wide trips, as making up ground against the camber is difficult if energy is wasted early.
Pace Map & Tactical Shape
Pace Forecast: Even to Strong (Contested Lead likely).
Leaders: Comic Hero (Stall 9) and Variety Act (Stall 12) have both shown early speed in previous runs (“Led”, “Prominent”).
Tactical Dynamic: The two primary pace angles are drawn widest. To clear the field and secure the rail before the turn, riders Hutchinson and Clutterbuck will likely have to commit early. This creates a high burn rate probability.
Beneficiaries: Portman Blue (Stall 6) maps perfectly to track this pace from midfield without expending early fuel. Espanita (Stall 11) is drawn poorly for a newcomer unless she possesses significant gate speed.
Top 3 Adjusted Ratings (HRB & Speed Figures)
Comic Hero (IRE)
HRB Total: 319.6 (Clear Top).
Speed Figures: Last Run (LR) 100.3 – This is a standout figure, significantly higher than any rival’s best.
Context: His 2nd at Newbury (6f, Firm) and 3rd at Salisbury set a high bar. However, these figures are historic (223 days ago) and on Turf.
Portman Blue
HRB Total: 221.6.
Speed Figures: LR 68.7.
Context: Posted a solid debut figure over this trip at Lingfield (28 days ago). The figure is lower than Comic Hero’s peak but is recent, relevant to the surface, and open to substantial progression (Run Comment: “not knocked about”).
Variety Act (GER)
HRB Total: 234.3.
Speed Figures: LR 52.1 / 2LR 30.8.
Context: Regression shown on last start (Speed Fig dropped from debut). The figure of 52.1 is inferior to Portman Blue’s debut effort.
Efficiency & Handicapping Notes
Trip Suitability: Comic Hero is bred for this trip (Saxon Warrior) but steps up from 6f after a long absence. If he doesn’t settle, the 7f could stretch him fresh. Portman Blue has already proven stamina for the trip.
Market/Mark Efficiency: Comic Hero will likely trade short (forecast 4/7) based on raw 2yo form figures. However, the layoff (223 days) combined with Stall 9 creates a negative value proposition. He is priced as if he has retained all ability and has a good draw; neither is guaranteed.
The “Improver” Angle: Portman Blue is a 4yo in a largely 3yo race. Physically more mature, carrying 10-2, he concedes weight but gains physical distinct advantages. His debut run comment (“ran on… not knocked about”) is a classic indicator of a horse ridden to peak second time out.
Newcomer Note: Espanita (Charlie Johnston) is the only newcomer with a pedigree demanding respect (dam Furia Cruzada was a Group winner). In a field where the bottom half is dross (Speed figures <40), she only needs to run to a mid-60s figure to hit the frame.
Analyst’s Verdict
COMIC HERO brings the strongest form by some margin, with a speed figure (100.3) that theoretically puts him clear. However, a 223-day absence and a treacherous draw in Stall 9 make him a vulnerable favourite at odds-on. The value alternative is PORTMAN BLUE. As a 4yo with a promising debut figure (68.7) and a much kinder draw (6), he is positioned to capitalize if the leaders go too hard from their wide berths. ESPANITA is the only newcomer of serious interest.
