Four runners, soft (soft to heavy in places), and Timeform’s pace call is “very weak”. That matters. In a small-field novice, they can crawl early and turn it into a 3f dash. If that happens, track position is half the battle and any horse giving away ground will struggle to claw it back.
Parnell Street is the obvious pace angle. Timeform expects him to go forward and HRB run-comment patterns back that up (regular “led at start”). In a race like this he can look the winner a long way out and is the type to trade shorter in-running. The problem is finishing it off: he’s had signs of not settling and that’s costly in a steadily-run race where you need to conserve energy.
The market has latched onto Timeless Treaty after a decisive C&D win, and Jack Kennedy is a positive. But he’s carrying a 6lb penalty and the HRB speed figures don’t suggest he’s miles clear. He’s solid, he should be prominent, and he’ll stay — but at odds-on you’re paying for reliability rather than obvious upside.
That upside sits with Open Secret. He’s got the strongest recent class evidence (a close-up fourth in a Cheltenham Grade 2) and your HRB speed numbers put him clear top on the card. In a tactical race you want a horse that can travel, hold a position, and then lift off the home turn. Open Secret looks the most likely to do that without needing the race to fall apart.
Bon Viveur is the awkward one. There’s ability in the profile and the step up in trip could suit on breeding, but his Navan run was poor and in this likely crawl he risks being poorly positioned when it matters.
Verdict: Small field, slow pace expected — don’t overcomplicate it. Open Secret has the best blend of sustainable figures and Graded proof. Timeless Treaty is the danger but short enough under a penalty. Parnell Street can control and trade short; winning is harder if he doesn’t settle.
