This was billed as a novice stakes, but it rode like a controlled workout for one horse. Constitution Hill turned his Flat debut into a statement, travelling like a class act before putting the race to bed in a matter of strides.
How the race was run
The key detail is pace. It was “honest enough” early, then steady down the back, which turned this into a position-and-kick contest rather than a true 1m4f stamina test. In that sort of shape, the winner needs two things: the ability to relax and the ability to quicken. Constitution Hill had both.
The winner: class, control, then separation
Constitution Hill sat midfield, moved up smoothly 2f out, and when Oisin Murphy asked, he went clear approaching the final furlong. That’s not just winning — that’s outclassing.
The numbers underline it:
Top speed: 39.92mph (best in the race)
Finishing Speed % (FSP): 109.68% (best in the race)
Closing 2f: 23.20s (110.4%) per the analysis
In plain terms: he didn’t crawl home off a soft lead — he accelerated late and kept going. That’s the sort of profile you see when a horse is much better than the opposition.
Square Necker: solid runner-up, but no answer
Square Necker did plenty right, disputing the lead and sticking to the job, but once the winner ranged upsides he was outpaced and couldn’t respond. His figures were respectable, but the gap (9½ lengths) tells you the truth: he ran his race and still got dealt with.
Gambino: worth upgrading
Gambino took a keen hold, then suffered a check/hampering around 2f out before staying on into third. He wasn’t getting to the winner anyway, but he’s the one to mark up for next time because his run had friction in it and he still finished his race. In a cleaner contest with cover, he can do better than this placing suggests.
Tripoli Flyer: paid for the draw and the early work
From stall 14 he had to do too much to get involved, and he faded when it mattered. That’s classic energy burn on the all-weather: spend it early, you don’t finish late. He’s a straightforward forgive if he turns up with a kinder draw and a lead to aim at.
What to take forward
Constitution Hill: this was a proper performance, not smoke and mirrors. The race shape suited, yes, but the way he travelled and the late split tell you the engine is still there. Whether he stays at this trip in stronger-run races is the only real question.
Gambino: better than the bare result. Keep onside.
Square Necker: reliable level, but this winner made him look ordinary.
Tripoli Flyer: ignore the finishing position; treat it as a setup issue.
Bottom line: Constitution Hill turned up, travelled like a Rolls-Royce, and put daylight between himself and the field when asked. On the evidence of both the eye and the metrics, this wasn’t just a win — it was a warning.
