Don’t overcomplicate it
Timeform calls the pace weak and that matters more than most angles in this sort of staying handicap. If they crawl early, the race is decided by who gets position and who is forced to make a long, inefficient move from the back.
Trojan Soldier is the obvious form horse. His C&D second in a higher band (69–79) came with an RPR 78 and he wasn’t ideally placed, yet still finished nearest. That’s the strongest piece of evidence in the whole field. The risk is tactical: he’s often ridden with patience, and a steady gallop can blunt that late kick unless he’s within striking distance turning in.
Further Measure is the reliable option. He’s a C&D winner, arrives off a Kempton win (RPR 71), and HRB has him top on Totals with a strong speed figure (67.67). The knock is the same as always with him: if he’s held up and they don’t go a yard early, he can run on too late. But in this line-up he’s still one of the few with repeatable, proven AW staying output.
Captain Robert sits in the “angle” bucket. The raw numbers aren’t screaming (HRB speed is modest), but the profile says he can compete: he won at Chelmsford and has posted RPRs in the high 60s. Timeform’s view that he may have needed the run last time, plus first-time blinkers, is the case. It’s not bombproof, but it’s at least a coherent reason for a bounce-back.
Skycutter is respected, not trusted. He made all here 13 days ago (RPR 72) and tops the HRB speed table (70.18), but that win came in a small, weaker race and he’s up in grade and weight. If he gets an uncontested lead again, fine — but at 4/1 you’re paying as if that scenario is guaranteed.
At prices, the value is clearer than the “tip”. Trojan Soldier is the most likely winner on the evidence, but you want him ridden closer if the pace is as steady as forecast. Further Measure makes most sense as the solid play because the HRB figures and recent win back it up. If the market gifts you something, it’s Further Measure at 11/2 rather than taking short odds about a pace-dependent set-up.
Bottom line: Steady pace expected, so prioritise position and proven staying efficiency.
Most likely: Trojan Soldier.
Best value: Further Measure (if you’re getting the bigger price).
Oppose at the price: Skycutter around 4/1.
