2.16 Taunton — St Austell Brewery Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle (2m3½f, Class 5, Soft)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a low-grade novice limited handicap where the market has basically done the hard work for you. Cooler Than Me is odds-on for a reason: he’s already beaten these conditions, at this track, over this trip, and he did it with plenty in hand.
Why Cooler Than Me sets the standard
He won the same Taunton race over 2m3f on heavy just a fortnight ago, travelling prominently before taking over turning in and stretching away from the last. It wasn’t a messy scramble; it was a clean performance and the sort that usually carries through in this grade. The 5lb claim from Fern O’Brien is a further plus, because it helps blunt any penalty effect and keeps him competitive despite the rise in status. On the HRB/TimeWise numbers he’s clear top-rated by a street, which matches the visual story: he looks the one with the most solid, repeatable piece of form.
If he runs anywhere near that last Taunton figure, he wins again.
Who can chase him home?
Diamond Days makes most sense for second. The Tizzard/Powell combo throws up plenty of positive stats and he’s been around the block in these novice handicaps. The issue is he doesn’t finish races off like a horse crying out to win; he’s more the “runs his race” type who can pick up pieces and hit the frame.
Talap is hard to ignore for place purposes because he was second to Cooler Than Me last time, but there’s no need to dress it up: he was well held and he looks limited. He can run into the places again, but turning the tables needs the favourite to underperform.
At bigger odds, Man Oh Man is the one with a realistic each-way shape if the ground turns it into a slog. He’s shown he can be involved at Taunton and he’s not totally out of his depth, but he needs others to help him by not finding much late on.
The overrated angles
Plenty will latch onto stats for Gorcombe And Wise, but the form is thin and his recent runs don’t scream “ready to win”. In this sort of race, ability and recent evidence matter more than any neat-looking percentages.
All Night Parking comes with risk written all over him after falling in the key piece of form behind Cooler Than Me, and the rest look like they’re either out of form, out of love with the game, or simply not good enough.
Verdict
This is straightforward. Cooler Than Me has the strongest recent performance, the right profile for the race conditions, and a clear edge on ratings. The rest are fighting for minor money.
