Five runners at Kempton over 7f usually means one thing: position matters more than “finishing speed”. If they steady it up early, the race can be over before the straight because the winner is often the horse who’s already in the right place turning in.
The race shape
With only five declared, expect a controlled tempo rather than a burn-up. That plays into the hands of the runners who can sit handy and quicken off the bend. If you’re giving away ground early, you’re relying on gaps, luck, and others underperforming.
Popmaster sets the standard
Popmaster is the obvious starting point because he’s already done it in the right place, at the right level. He won a Class 3 at Kempton recently and, crucially, he beat Nikovo in the process. That’s the cleanest, most relevant form line in this field. He travels, he holds a position, and he finds enough when asked. In a small-field 7f handicap, that’s exactly the profile you want.
Kingdom Come is the danger — if he behaves at the start
Kingdom Come has the résumé: proven on the all-weather, plenty of Kempton experience, and enough class to win a race like this. The issue is tactical. His recent runs suggest he can make life hard for himself by being slowly away or ending up too far back. Over 7f with five runners, that’s a problem. If he breaks on terms and sits closer, he’s the one who can take Popmaster into a proper fight.
Nikovo looks solid, but the ceiling is a place
Nikovo is in fair nick and keeps running creditably, but he’s already been measured against the likely winner here — and found wanting. He can pick up pieces, but in a race that could turn into a sprint, he may again be doing his best work too late.
God Of War has the ability — and the obvious risk
God Of War has the raw ability for this grade, no doubt. He’s shown he can win at Class 3 level. But he’s also shown a tendency to race keenly, and keen horses in tactical Kempton races often pay for it late. The 5lb claim helps, but he still needs to settle to be a serious threat.
Brunel Nation looks “well in” — but needs to prove he’s good enough
On paper, Brunel Nation is the one people will try to talk themselves into because he’s rated much lower than the others and gets plenty of weight. The problem is simple: he’s not yet proved he’s a Class 3 performer. He ran well to finish second at Lingfield in a lower grade, but that doesn’t automatically translate into beating hardened 90-rated AW handicappers at Kempton.
Verdict
This looks a race where the most reliable, tactically suited horse wins rather than the one with the most theoretical upside.
Selection: Popmaster
He’s got the strongest recent Kempton evidence, he should be in the right spot throughout, and in a small field he’s the one most likely to control the outcome.
Main danger: Kingdom Come
If he breaks clean and doesn’t gift the favourite a tactical head start, he’s the one who can make it interesting.
