This is a proper little 3yo puzzle: only five runners, similar marks, and Kempton’s polytrack, so don’t expect miracles. The winner is far more likely to come from positioning and timing than some hidden “class edge”.
The race setup
With a small field, there’s always the danger of a crawl turning into a sprint. That plays straight into the hands of anything that can sit handy and quicken, and it makes life harder for any runner needing a strong pace to bring stamina into it.
The key players
Only In Manila (OR 75) looks the most solid option on the page. He’s already won over course and distance, and crucially he proved he can still win even after being slowly away. That’s a big tick in a tactical race: he doesn’t need everything to fall perfectly, and he’s still progressing.
Helga (OR 77) is the obvious tactical threat. She made all over C&D in a maiden, and in this sort of five-runner handicap she could try to boss it again. She’s lightly raced and open to improvement, but now she’s in a handicap carrying 9-7, so if she gets taken on early, she’s not guaranteed to find plenty late.
Toastmaster (OR 75) is the late runner who becomes dangerous if they go too hard. His Wolverhampton second reads well on the numbers and he finished strongly, but if the front end pinches a soft lead, he could be forced to do too much too late.
Parisian Scholar (OR 79) is top weight and has been winning on the all-weather, often from the front. The issue is simple: in a small-field handicap, giving weight away is rarely fun, and if he ends up in a pace battle, he’s doing the hard work for others.
Moment Of Light (OR 72) heads the market, but he needs to prove he’s up to this level at the trip in this company. He might improve, but at a short price he’s not the one I want to be relying on.
The bet
Only In Manila is the one with the right blend: C&D form, a progressive profile, and the ability to win without needing the lead. In a race that could turn tactical and messy, that matters.
Verdict
Selection: Only In Manila
Main danger: Helga (if she gets a soft lead)
Next best: Toastmaster (if they go a proper
