2m½f | Heavy | 11 runners
This is a proper Clonmel winter handicap: short trip, deep ground, and no hiding place. On heavy, it’s rarely about a turn of foot. It’s about travelling in the mud, holding position, and still having something left after the last.
What wins this race
Proven heavy-ground form (not “might handle it”).
Track form at Clonmel is a big plus — it’s a place that finds out non-stayers and weak travellers.
Simple reliability: in this ground, quirky types and serial non-finishers are a tax on your wallet.
The key runners
Courtbrack Boy (11/4) looks the most solid. He was second here on heavy in January, which is exactly the evidence you want in a 0–100 at this venue. He can race a bit freely, so the hood and the 3lb claim matter — if he settles, he’s the one most likely to be in the right place turning in and still finishing his race.
Chemdawg (4/1) is the main danger. The ratings have him top and his recent form says he’s consistent in these handicaps, including a Clonmel heavy third behind Finnicky Filly. He’s not flashy, but he keeps going — and that’s often enough when others cry enough two out.
Finnicky Filly (9/2) has the winning proof — she won here on heavy in December — but she’s a risk. She followed that with a pulled-up effort back at Clonmel, and her profile screams “only when she feels like it”. If she turns up travelling, she can win. If she doesn’t, you’re cooked before the last.
Blue Reed (5/1) is capable but has to lump a big weight in a bog. He’s more of a place angle than a confident win play in this sort of grind.
Verdict
In this ground, I’m siding with the horse who has already shown he can do it here, on heavy, in a handicap.
Selection: Courtbrack Boy
Main danger: Chemdawg
Wildcard: Finnicky Filly (only if she travels)
No romance, no guesswork: Clonmel heavy form is king, and Courtbrack Boy has it.
