Lingfield 3.45 – Marathon Trial (2m, AW): don’t overthink it🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a specialist’s race. Two miles round Lingfield on the all-weather isn’t about romance form or “he’ll stay one day”. It’s about track craft, position, and proven stamina. Get caught wide, do too much early, or fail to settle and you’re cooked turning in.
What this race demands
A proper 2m engine (not just “stays 1m6f”).
Efficiency round the bends: saving ground matters.
A rider who can stack them up, then go.
Course evidence is a real edge here — Lingfield can make fools of good horses.
The one to beat: Roaring Legend
There’s no point pretending this is clever. He won this race last year over course and distance and comes back looking the most solid option again.
He’s proven at the trip, proven round Lingfield, and has the right draw in stall 2 to get a soft enough run. In a race where plenty will be trying 2m under pressure, he’s already shown he can do it when it matters. Top weight is a fact, not a fear — he’s the class act and he knows the job.
The danger: Enemy
If you’re building a case against the favourite, it starts here. Stall 1 is a gift over this trip and Rossa Ryan/Ian Williams is a combination that can nick races when others get it wrong.
The worry is the usual one: he can be a hostage to fortune if he’s slow away or needs splits at the wrong time. But if he gets a clear run, he’s the one most likely to pounce late.
Solid each-way player: Brasil Power
Tough, genuine, and keeps turning up in these staying handicaps. He’s got the engine for the surface and the grade, and he’ll be running on when others are crying enough. The draw isn’t perfect and he may need a bit to fall right, but he’s a proper contender for the frame.
Why I’m against the “sexy” ones
Anniversary has ability, but this is a different exam: AW + 2m + Class 2 + wider draw. That’s not a gentle learning curve.
Solarize is progressive, but stepping into a race like this off a lower mark screams “needs to be well ahead of the handicapper”. Possible, but you’re paying for potential.
Prydwen/Sheradann/Peking Opera all have bits and pieces, but too much has to go right for a straight win argument.
The bet
Roaring Legend to win.
Keep it simple: course-and-distance winner, right draw, right profile. If you want a saver, Enemy is the obvious one from stall 1. If you’re playing each-way at a price, Brasil Power is the dependable grinder.
Lingfield 2m is a race for specialists. Roaring Legend is the specialist.
