Newbury 2.00 – West Berkshire Mencap Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (2m4½f, Good to Soft)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a Newbury race where you win by travelling, jumping and holding a position. It’s 2m4½f on good to soft, so you want a horse that settles, stays, and doesn’t need everything to fall right.
The bet: Guchen
He’s the one with the cleanest profile.
He arrives off a proper handicap win at Kempton over 2m5f on similar ground, where he pressed the pace, took over at the right time and found enough after clouting the last. That tells you two things: he’s in form, and he’s got the engine to get up the Newbury straight when it matters.
The clincher is the 10lb claim. In a Class 4 handicap with an average OR around 105, a genuine 10lb swing isn’t a footnote — it’s a big edge. If he runs to the same level as Kempton, he’s effectively thrown in.
Main danger: Our Dylan
He’s thriving and the recent-form figures back it up. He’s tough, stays, and he’ll be ridden confidently by a conditional who’s clearly in good nick. The worry is this is a stronger race than the Taunton/Wincanton Class 5 type events he’s been picking up, and he’s giving away less wriggle room off 109. Still, if it becomes a proper stamina test, he’s the one most likely to keep finding.
Place shout with a caveat: Activist
The Pipe/Corcoran combination is a plus and he ran a solid second at Plumpton over a similar trip. But he’s at his best when it’s properly soft. If “good to soft” is on the quicker side, he’s more of a place play than a win bet.
Verdict
Don’t overthink it. This looks set up for the horse with recent winning form, proven stamina around the trip, and a meaningful claim.
Selection: Guchen (win).
Danger: Our Dylan.
If the ground rides softer than advertised: Activist for the frame.
