3.22 Doncaster – Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle (2m1f, Class 4, Good to Soft)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a proper little 0–120 where you don’t need to overthink it: nine runners, eight hurdles, and Doncaster’s long run-in. If you’re travelling and jumping, you’ve got every chance. If you’re clouting hurdles or needing cajoling, you’ll get found out.
The one to beat: Minella Jury
He’s the most solid profile in the field. Progressive, consistent, and still looks on the up off 118. The big tick is Brian Hughes doing the steering in a race where timing and clean hurdling decide it. He doesn’t need everything to fall right – just a handy pitch and a clear sight of his hurdles. If he’s within striking distance turning in, he’s the one most likely to go by and stay there.
Main danger: Leaumec De Mee
Lightly raced, and that’s both the appeal and the risk. He’s got the “could be better than his mark” look off 110 for a yard that wins plenty of these. The slight concern is he can still look a bit green/keen, and Doncaster will punish you if you waste petrol early. If he settles and they go a proper pace, he’s the one who can come through late and threaten the favourite.
The grinder for the places: King Ulanda
He keeps turning up and running his race. Not flashy, but dependable, and you usually want one like that for a place in this sort of handicap. He’s not the obvious “hidden well-in” type, but he’s the one you can see battling on when others have cried enough.
The rest – why they’re not my win bet
North Of Richmond has promise, but he’s not obviously thrown in off 115 and this is competitive enough.
Light Fandango has the course win, but he’s got a boom-or-bust edge and you don’t want that at a tight price.
As Fast As Wind is in form and fairly treated, but needs a smooth run and the right set-up.
A Different Kind has ability but is a 9yo near the top of the weights; more “nick a place” than “win with authority” these days.
Killycarn and Parramount come with too many questions for a race where you need straightforward.
How it’s likely run
Expect this to be about position and rhythm rather than stamina. The winner will be the horse that travels, jumps, and can quicken from the home turn. That points straight back to the Hughes ride.
The bet
Minella Jury to win.
If you’re playing it safer, Leaumec De Mee is the one for cover, and King Ulanda is the solid place angle.
That’s it: uncomplicated race, uncomplicated answer — follow the progressive horse with the best jockey.
