This is a proper Newbury staying handicap: long run to the first, plenty of time to organise, then the race starts for real turning in. Over 3m on good to soft you need a horse that travels, jumps clean, and keeps finding. Anything half-committed gets found out after the last.
What wins this
Stamina that’s already proven at 3m+
Reliable hurdling under pressure
A profile that says “in form and still progressing”, not “one good day every six weeks”
The one to beat: Call Me Legend
He’s the only one arriving with a straightforward, upward curve. Two wins this winter and both came the right way: travelling, taking a position, then staying on when it mattered. He’s not flashy, but he’s strong at the finish, and that’s what Newbury asks for over 3m. Off 11-0, he looks fairly treated if he’s still improving, and he doesn’t need the race to fall apart to get involved.
The main danger: Big City Roller
Raw ability? Plenty. If he gets into a rhythm, he can make this uncomfortable for a lot of these. The worry is obvious: he’s been doing his damage over fences and isn’t the most error-proof when pressure ramps up. Newbury is forgiving early, not late. Carrying 11-9, any sloppy hurdling costs you twice — once in momentum, and again in energy.
The grinder you can trust: Jalisco Star
If you want one who will keep galloping when others cry enough, she’s it. Loads of evidence she stays, and she’s not scared of a scrap. She’s the type you’ll still see plugging on after the last while others are emptying. If they go too hard up front, she’s the one who picks up pieces.
The solid but not bombproof types
Peacenik has the class for this level, but he’s on a big weight and can be a touch untidy at his hurdles. He’ll run his race, but he’s not the easiest to trust for a clean, efficient round.
Kruger Park has ability and course form, but the hanging/jumping concerns are not what you want in a 3m handicap where rhythm is everything.
The ones I’m happy to oppose
Fierce Warrior: the recent pull-up is a hard negative in a stamina test. You can forgive one bad run, but you can’t back it like it won’t happen again.
Tiny Tetley: talent is there, but the recent errors and confidence issues make him a risky proposition under 12-2.
Champagne Twist / Magical King: too many non-completions/poor runs. In this sort of race you want reliability, not hope.
Verdict
This looks set up for the horse with the cleanest current profile and the strongest finish.
Selection: CALL ME LEGEND
Main danger: Big City Roller
Solid place angle: Jalisco Star
No drama, no romance: Call Me Legend is the one I want onside in a 3m Newbury handicap.
