Dundalk’s mile is all about position. You’ve got a short run to the bend, a turning track, and traffic everywhere. Get caught wide early and you’re burning petrol just to hold a place. In a field of 13, the draw and early slot matter as much as raw ability.
What sort of race is this?
There’s enough pace to make it a proper contest. Lahore Da King has been racing prominently, Una Matata often goes forward, and a couple of others like to be in the first wave. That points to a winner either bossing it from a good pitch, or stalking just behind and getting first run when they swing for home.
The one to beat: Brewing (stall 1)
This is as straightforward as it gets: stall 1 at Dundalk over a mile is gold dust. Brewing can hold the rail, save ground, and avoid the worst of the scrimmaging. His recent Dundalk form is solid in stronger company than this – he was second in a 77–94 here on 20 February and second again over 7f on 28 January, shaping like he’s ready to strike.
Yes, he’s not been prolific at the mile, but today’s set-up is the key: perfect draw + honest pace. If he gets the usual handy position and doesn’t get pocketed, he’s the one most likely to be produced at the right time.
Main danger: Ocean Manifest (stall 8)
He’s the proper course horse. Won over C&D on 16 January and generally runs his race around here. If he lands a position without doing too much early work from stall 8, he’ll be finishing stronger than most. The slight worry is tactical: get posted wide into the bend and you’re immediately on the back foot. If he tucks in, he’s right there.
Others with a say
Neo Smart (stall 4): ran well in that Ocean Manifest race and has a draw that lets her sit close without drama. More reliable for a place than a win, but not dismissed.
Una Matata (stall 11): clearly in form, but she’s had starting stall issues and now has a wide-ish pitch again. She can win if she breaks clean and gets cover; she can also lose it in the first two strides.
Lahore Da King (stall 12): improving and game, but this is a tough track to overcome a wide draw at a mile. If he’s forced to use up fuel early, it’ll show late.
The verdict
This looks a race where the obvious “Dundalk specialists” will be thereabouts, but the best blend of setup and form sits with Brewing. He’s drawn to run the cleanest race, he’s coming here fit, and he’s been competing well in deeper heats than this.
Selection: BREWING
Biggest threat: OCEAN MANIFEST
