This is a Wolverhampton 7f handicap: a sharp left-hand turn, a short run to the first bend, and a field where track position matters as much as raw ability. With 12 runners, you can lose the race in the first 200 yards if you’re posted wide.
The market is focusing on Maximising, and it’s easy to see why. He’s lightly raced and still has improvement in him, and the Kevin De Foy/Daniel Muscutt combo is in good nick. The problem is stall 10. At this trip round here, high draws can force you into a choice you don’t want: burn petrol early to get in, or accept being trapped wide and hope you’re good enough to overcome it. At a short price, he’s a bit of a hostage to the break and the first bend.
For me, the solid option is Benacre. He’s the most reliable Class 4 horse in the line-up and he arrives in proper form, having won a stronger 7f handicap at Newcastle. The key is stall 2. That gives him every chance to sit handy, save ground, and press the button at the right time. In a race full of “ifs”, he’s the one with the fewest question marks.
If you want value, it’s Abduction. The bare form last time at Newcastle is ugly, but the note explains plenty: he was slow away after bumping his head in the stalls and was beaten before he’d even got organised. Two runs back he won a 7f Class 4 and, crucially, he’s already shown he can mix it with horses like Benacre in this grade. From stall 6, he can get cover and deliver one run. At the prices, he’s the each-way angle.
Giorgio M is the tactical wildcard from stall 1. If he breaks well and they let him boss the rail, he can make life awkward for the closers. He’s not obviously thrown in, but he’s the type who can run his race without needing luck.
The rest mostly need things to fall right. Stenmark and Ultramarine have bits of form, but neither screams “well in” and both can be drawn into the wrong part of the track. Grabajabba has headgear on and a workable draw, but he’s been finding less than ideal moments to deliver. The bigger prices look up against it in this grade.
Verdict:
This should be won by a horse who gets a clean trip and saves ground. Benacre has the draw and the current form to do exactly that. Maximising is the danger if he slots in from a tricky stall. Abduction is the value play if he breaks on terms and gets the run of the race.
