Five-runner handicaps at Wolverhampton over an extended mile are rarely about hard-luck stories. They’re about who gets a handy position, who switches off, and who still has something when they turn it into a sprint from the home bend. With this set-up, there’s nowhere to hide: if you’re not travelling, you’re done.
The pace angle
With only five in, expect a steady early tempo and a proper race from the three pole. That puts a premium on a horse that can hold a position and quickly go through the gears. Anything that needs cover, gaps, or a meltdown up front is immediately on the back foot.
Aneirin’s Sword sets the standard
Aneirin’s Sword is the one with the most straightforward profile: he’s been operating in this bracket and repeatedly running to a similar level. His recent sequence of placed efforts in 0–65 company says he’s in form and, crucially, he’s been doing it without needing everything to fall perfectly. In a small field that’s exactly what you want—reliable tactical speed, no drama, no guessing.
If Sean Levey has him in the first two early, he’s the one most likely to be still there at the business end, and in this sort of race that often wins it.
The main dangers
Inherent Resolve is the classic “could be better than this” type. He’s got the pedigree and has been running in stronger races, but what he’s shown so far is a horse that can race a bit too freely and then not finish the job. He also carries top weight. He can absolutely improve now handicapping, but you’re buying potential rather than proof.
High Chieftain is lightly raced and may have more upside than the rest, but he’s still learning and this step up to 1m½f asks a question. If he relaxes, he’s a proper threat; if he doesn’t, he’ll be vulnerable late.
Sup Of Red looks more like a place player. She shaped a bit better last time than the bare result, but she still needs to show she truly wants this trip in a tactical race.
Spirit Of Mara is the one you want to see doing it before you back him. He’s been given chances and hasn’t screamed “winner-in-waiting”.
Verdict
This is not the day for fancy stories. It’s a small field, likely tactical, and the most solid option is the one already doing it week after week.
Selection: Aneirin’s Sword
Danger: High Chieftain (if he settles and stays)
If you’re taking a swing: Inherent Resolve (only if the market speaks and he looks calmer in the preliminaries).
