This is a proper Dundalk staying handicap: 14 runners, plenty with course form, and no hiding place over 1m4f if you don’t travel or you get marooned. The key today is that the numbers matter. My draw data for this trip in 14-runner fields points firmly towards the high stalls, so I’m weighting that heavily when the form lines are tight.
Daonethatgotaway sits right at the centre of the race. He’s a repeatable performer on the Polytrack, arrives off another solid run, and the 7lb claim is a real edge in a race capped at 70. Crucially, he breaks from stall 14, the sort of position that can keep you out of trouble and give you first crack at the straight when the pace lifts. He doesn’t need to improve much to win this — he just needs a clean enough passage and a sensible ride.
The obvious threat is Baila Conmigo, who comes here as an improving 4yo and a recent course-and-distance winner. He’s learned to finish his races properly and he’s not done progressing yet. The slight niggle is stall 5, because it puts more pressure on getting the run of the race in a big field. If he’s held up and blocked, he’s vulnerable. If he’s ridden to hold a handy pitch and sees daylight early, he can absolutely go again.
Porsche Lad is the reliable one. Loads of Dundalk form, regularly runs his race, and should be bang there again. The issue is that he keeps bumping into one better, and from stall 4 he’s not getting the same help from the bias as some of his rivals. He’s more place than win unless the race falls apart late.
At bigger prices, Church Mountain is the interesting angle. He’s a winner over the trip here and he’s drawn 13, which is exactly what you want on your numbers. He can be awkward — he’s not always the sharpest away — but if he breaks and holds a position, he’s good enough to hit the frame and he’s not a 10/1 shot on ability alone.
Benavente has the raw Dundalk stats that pull you in, but he’s an older horse and the win habit isn’t strong at this level. He’ll run on and threaten for a place, yet he needs the leaders to overcook it to actually get past them.
Verdict: This looks set up for Daonethatgotaway. He’s the strongest blend of current form, surface profile and a major draw advantage, with the claim tipping the balance. Baila Conmigo is the danger if he gets a clean run. Church Mountain is the value each-way play from a good gate.
