Newbury 2.40 (Sat) – Novices’ Limited H’cap Chase, 2m4f, Good to Soft🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a proper Newbury novice handicap: 16 fences, a long straight, and nowhere to hide. It’s not about who looks flash early; it’s about who jumps economically, holds a position, and still has enough legs from 2 out.
The pace and how it plays
With a small field, they can mess about, but Newbury often turns into a sustained gallop from the far side. If you’re giving ground at your fences, you won’t get it back. If you’re held up too far, you’re relying on others making mistakes.
Rodney sets the standard
Rodney comes here as the obvious form horse: three wins on the bounce and doing it like a horse still ahead of the handicapper. The Ludlow win was the key—he travelled strongly, survived a mistake, and still found enough late. He’s topweight, but he looks like a horse who handles a battle and stays the trip properly. If he jumps clean, he’s the one they all have to beat.
The main dangers
Mon Champion is the classy threat. Nicholls/Cobden in a novice handicap always demands respect and he’s shown he can finish a race strongly. The caveat is simple: you’re trusting him to hold it together at his fences after that recent fall. If he does, he’s right in it; if he doesn’t, he’s beat.
Noble Park has ability and the Henderson yard is a major positive, but his recent chase efforts suggest he can be a bit in-and-out. He can travel like the winner and still leave you sweating at a couple of fences. If he puts in a smooth round, he’s a player.
Scorsese is the value angle. He’s got solid chase form in the book and that 7lb claim matters in a race like this. He doesn’t need to find chunks—just a clean, efficient round and he’s in the mix for places at least, possibly more if the principals wobble.
The rest
Palacio is capable on his day but has shown he can throw in a stinker; you’d want confidence from the way he’s ridden.
Authentic Legacy is genuine and likeable, and his Newbury hurdle win is a tick for the track, but this is a deeper chase test and he needs to prove he’s up to this level.
Southoftheborder keeps hitting the frame but looks priced on reputation more than winning evidence.
King Califet has questions to answer after being well held on his recent chase start.
Bottom line
This looks set up for the horse with the clearest profile: Rodney. He’s in form, he’s finding plenty late, and he’s been doing it under proper pressure. The dangers are clear—Mon Champion for raw ability if he jumps, and Scorsese as the one who can outrun his price with the claim.
Selection: Rodney
Danger: Mon Champion
Value/each-way: Scorsese
